How often should you wash a vehicle? What about if it drives about 2,500 miles per week? I drive pure black Livery (limo) SUV's I take it thru the automatic car wash place about once a day, but would LOVE if the black paint actually stayed BLACK... and stayed cleaner longer. Any suggestions?

Limo drivers and taxi drivers have it tough as the car is always exposed to the elements and if you go to an automatic car wash every day, even the best ceramic coatings will eventually fail (even though they last way longer compared to regular waxes or sealants). Your best bet would be to stay on top of things by having a ceramic coating applied, and then maintaining that coating with a silica spray sealant once every two weeks. The paint should at least stay glossy and slick (even though it will accumulate swirls and scratches).

And it will look great, but one MAYBE 2 trips thru the car wash and it's gone.... not to mention the black just isn't black. When we first by them they look great, and in less then a few months they start to show ALL the swirls and are not shiny. And I've looked for the "black" products at Wal-Mart, Target, Auto zone even Lowes... lol and NO ONE has them. 😥

Could you do a video where you try to clean your car at a public self wash station? For example some people have nice cars but live in apartment complexes. It would be interesting to see how youd organize a 'esential cleaning pack' that you can take in the car and basically do the stuff there and only use the water from the wash :) not their brush🤢 Awesome video nonetheless

I use a public self wash station as i live in a apartment, i take my detailing bag with various chemicals; wheel cleaner, pre wash in a pump sprayer and shampoo, drying towels. Take it even further you can carry 3 buckets filled with water and take them to the wash bay and crack on

Hey pan, I think you missed one thing that I always make sure to take care of during or after the detail. The windshield wiper wipe down at some point during the wash because if the windows are clean but the wipers aren't it will get it dirty again! :) other than that, perfect video as always!

@@bzmouse after detailing the car you want to take a damp microfiber towel and pinch both wiper blades one at a time and floss them with the towel back and forth a few times before putting them down back on the glass. Assuming this is also done after you clean the exterior front winshield. Cleaning the wipers after every wash ensures you don't contaminate the glass so quickly after washing. No product needed just water ;)

Many of us travel to events to exhibit our vehicles and once we arrive we always want to freshen up the looks by removing the road gunk. Hi Pan, I recommend the new single bucket wash method, it guarantees no dirt gets on your wash mitts. You just need 1 bucket of soap and 6-8 wash mitts. Use the wash mitts and dip in soap once per panel and then set aside. This means you are using a new wash mitt per panel and guaranteed no dirt in your soap bucket since it’s a new mitt every time. Hope this helps in the future :)

I saw another guy do this with microfibre cloths folder in 4. He would use 1 cloth for 2 panels or so, flipping the cloth to a fresh side each time. Then toss it aside and grab a fresh one.

I’m now so confident and have a relaxing time washing my vehicle. Such a great feeling to look out in the sun and see a beautifully clean car. I simply use the McKee’s or ONR Rinseless washes as a drying aid to clean the door jambs after the wash is done.

One tip I came up with my self when dealing with spray on and rinse off sealants.. work from the bottom up when you rinse with the pressure washer.. less likely to have the drippings from the washing going on up top carrying off any product before you have a chance to set it in with pressure on the lower parts. Love it or hate it.. I found this method works well for insuring everything is going on more evenly.

My blue 2017 GMC Sierra truck still looks amazing after 3 years of cleaning it properly thanks to your earlier "2018 regular maintenance wash vid". Even though it's a "truck" I treat it as if it's my own Porsche 911 dream vehicle. I took the truck to a professional to have it paint prepped and ceramic coated immediately after viewing that video and it was worth every penny. Bought better soap, buckets, drying cloths, detail spray and wheel/tire dressings. The truck still looks better than it did brand new after every wash. A standard wash without detail spray is usually about a 2 hour project but it's definitely relaxing and rewarding. Congrats on the new ride and thanks for continuing to educate us with your passionate knowledge on keeping our vehicles looking their best. Cars are much like clothing. If it looks good, you will most likely feel good while driving it! One subject I would love more info on is using quick detail spray on cars that haven't been washed in a week. Quick detail spray always has me worried that I'm going to scratch the vehicle while just cleaning up bird droppings or wanting to clean a hood without having to wash the entire vehicle. Do they work as well as they claim?

If using a detail spray for anything other than a drying aid. You should only use it on a fairly clean car surface to remove light dust or finger prints. Not on bird droppings, dirt, or any large particles.

@@ianirwin5405 I would normally foam the car, let it sit then rinse. Then foam (instead of dipping my wash mitt in soapy water) and use that foam to hand wash. So I did what Pan did, spray the rinse less wash, let it sit, and then proceed to my foam wash. The rinse less wash is supposed to be designed to remove dirt better. So thats what I do now, maybe I’m wrong, but Pan is more experienced than me so I followed his instructions. I tried it and I like it, but everyone’s conditions are different.

On my comment on it being easier: I think it’s easier because It seems like the rinse less wash removes a lot more dirt than a foam pre wash so my foam hand wash is faster. But again everyone’s conditions and results are different.

One area you didn't cover in washing a car is to clean and dress the inner wheel wells. I typically clean well as I clean the wheels and then when I dress the tires (I use Mequiars natural shine protectant), I spray the inner wheel wells and use a scrap piece if towel to work it in to the surface. It makes the wheel wells look so great. I picked up this habit from watching preowned dealers and wholesalers spray a dressing on the inner wheel wells to make them look better.

Thanks Richard! Yes you can use it as a drying aid once the base layer is applied but I wouldn’t recommend it after each wash. Maybe once a month. It’s a pretty durable spray on protection so don’t overdo it.

Pan, I enjoy your videos on car detailing and cleaning. You have mentioned before about troublesome water spotting when rinsing the car after washing. I have found a way to eliminate this effect completely. I do a final rinse with store-bought distilled water which dries absolutely clean with no residue whatsoever. I use a battery-powered pressure washer (I have a Dewalt unit that works great.) that can be fed from a 5-gallon bucket containing the distilled water. Four to five gallons are enough to rinse the card. It is especially good in the gaps between panels where it is very hard to dry with a towel. It only costs about $7 for the water. I also use this system for my house windows.

When you foamed it from the start you let it sit a few minutes and then started to bucket wash it That is fine if you are starting out with a fairly clean car but if you have a car with a lot of road grime, bugs, dirt etc. Should you not rinse that foam off first after letting it dwell a couple minutes and then start your two bucket wash?

Had my first washing after 8 weeks of garage keeping. Don't yet have a pressure washer but the Eley hose sprayer nozzle set worked fine. I was not able to foam but otherwise followed the pattern in the video. As the car was just professionally finished and ceramic coated the results were great. I finished with Gyeon Wet Coat on the wheels and a Carpro Hydro2 Lite wet spray while towel drying the glass and paint. Looks too nice to drive. I can't thank you enough Pan.

@17:34 Also really quick, if you use have a coating on your car, you can use free flowing water to dry it faster. (What I mean by that is the removal of the hose head or power washer spray tip so the stream is laminar/smooth.) I usually start at the roof and let smooth stream sheet all of the beads off of the paint and glass (This works on wheels too). Then the car should be around 70-90% dry. Follow up with a spray wax, detailer or use a leaf blower/air blaster. If you live a hot/humid environment like me, this makes the leaf blower drying go by faster. The glass is probably the hardest to dry because if you miss a spot you’ll have water spots everywhere. **Just a small tip for anyone who also uses a leaf blower to dry their coated car**

The waffle weave towels work great for glass…..I use a microfiber towel to rinse and remove the dirt…..I go over after cleaning with the waffle weave with a small hit of glass cleaner. Basically microfiber to remove the dirt and waffle weave to remove the streaks. For door jambs fuel doors, I use a dedicated microfiber towel that Does NOT touch the external paint.

Over the last 34 years of washing and finishing my 1988 IROC the process has changed, although I have always (beginning in the 70s with my first car) washed it twice a week. Back in the early 90s a fantastic product that came out was a colored wax: I chose the red to match the "burgundy" color of my car. As we all know, no matter how careful one is when buffing out the wax, invariably there would be a number of small spots of dried white wax. The color wax at least hides the presence of these spots in all of the nooks and cranies. I recently began using a foam cannon (MJJC). I foam the entire car, let it dwell, then rinse. I repeat the foaming and rinsing. Then I hand wash with a two bucket method (also new process for me). I use a leaf blower to dry out the hood louvers and then, finally, I use Turtle Wax Flex Wax as a drying agent; however, I spray it on, rub/spread it with a microfiber towel, then use a large drying towel. BTW: one thing that my father taught me was, that if you drive your car in the winter--especially where the scourge known as salt is used on the roads--rinse out the wheel well lips as often as possible. My 1979 Camaro, which I drove in the winters, was rust free until it was totalled in 1988.

ikFoam pro 2 with “normal” tip, 3.8~ oz of brake buster and 39ish ounces of water SO much foam so little product. (: works great! If you’re an apartment dweller like I, use your pump sprayer that has your ONR pre spray in it to rinse the tire and then dry with a soft microfiber towel.

I just did a great wash using these techniques though I'm still waiting for my pressure washer. With the ELY Hose/QD/Sprayer Nozzle Set I can lay down a powerful spray, much like a pressure washer. A Foamaster foam gun at the highest setting and full Strength Adams makes plenty of rich clinging foam in no time. I disconnected the clunky spray gun and QD attachment from the canister and screwed it directly on to the ELY nozzle so I wouldn't have to constantly squeeze the handle, replacing the sprayer nozzle after foaming. I've gone from newbie to enthusiast in record time. Thank you Pan for all your tips and tricks.

A new car is never new until it's properly detailed. - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example. - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat. If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well. I used your technique today and my Nautical blue 4runner looks great. It's never been through a car wash and is three years old, but today it looks great. I don't have any protection but I forget about the synthetic wax you recommend. Edit: I had virtually no dirt in the bottom of the bucket using the prep methods. Hi Pan. After seeing Scott Bley of DPC use 5 mitts from a bucket of clean soapy water and never put a dirty mitt into water after using it, I tried it and have used it ever since. I was using the 2 bucket method, but found that after ‘rinsing’ my mitt in the clean water bucket and then dunking it in the soapy solution bucket and using it to wash a car, I very quickly ended up with 2 buckets of dirty soapy solution. When i tell my clients I never dunk a wash mitt in dirty water they are intrigued and have sometimes employed me just to see how it works. I feel a multi-mitt method is best. Lloyd

There are many good techniques, you use what works best for you in your world. I have been using my method for decades now and it has always produced perfect results. My cars don't have a single scratch or swirl. I'm not about to start having 5 to 10 wash mitts for a car. Hehe. But that's certainly another good alternative.

I have a 2007 Lexus ES350 that I really like and intend to keep for years to come and I want to protect and preserve the soon to be 16 year old paint. When I do glass I love Stoner glass cleaner. I like to apply the solution directly on my glass cleaning towel apply to the window (1 window at a time) then I have another towel ready to buff the window. It works very well.

Man, pan youre videos seriously are high quality, thought out, and informative. So first off, much appreciated. I do have some questions though, my main question is, how often do you use something like a bead maker or ceramic spray as a drying aid? I cant imagine youre apply bead maker twice a week when you clean your car do you? And if not, What do you use on the weeks its not needed for a drying aid? Onr? No drying aid? Also, this is more generic, but i still cant wrap my head around the differences between a quick detailer, paint sealant, and drying aid. It seem weird to me if say, i washed my car three days ago and it got dusty to use something like bead maker to clean it. Maybe im wrong and thats exactly what its for but would that not cause issues to apply a coating like that to a dirty surface?

Bonjour Pan, toujours un plaisir de regarder tes vidéos même en Anglais. Ton nettoyage paraît toujours si simple, pour ma part mon véhicule conserve un aspect granuleux après lavage et je ne comprends pas, j'ai un traitement céramique, utilise un nettoyeur haute pression, foam canon, carpro reset, nettoyage à la main et 2 seaux, je rince à l'eau osmosée et sèche avec les mêmes microfibre que toi mais il reste toujours des contaminants sur la peinture, je ne retrouve plus la sensation glissante du début... j'utilise également iron X de temps en temps. Si tu as un peu de temps pour répondre quel serait ton avis? Merci encore pour tes vidéos !

Good stuff Pan-Man. I have found Meguiers wheel cleaner diluted is good for my Taco’s wheels; also use same type bucket with a dirt guard and mitt. For best shine on tires I have found that spraying on just about any silicone dressing in the sun gives the best shine-no wiping required. Will check back for more!!

Great video! May I add that you can roll your car about 1/4 of a tire revolution after applying tire dressing and spread the dressing to the once under part of the tires for an even coat. ☺️

My audi produces alot of brake dust. Sometimes I put it up on jack stands and take the wheels off. This allows me to completely clean the wheels and calipers from all angles. Love the turbo BTW, beautiful car. 😍
