How to Wash Your Kendo Uniform - The Kendo Show

This is a somewhat informal video, but we hope it is useful. You can use this technique for any cotton Aizome Kendogi or Hakama, or even a pair of Kote!

For anyone who skipped over the part where he says “don’t do this in your bathtub”. Dawn dish soap can wash the stains out of the bathtub. I think you have to do it within the first few hours though.

great info, tx. might be useful to wear hand gloves while washing? and repeat d process w new clean water before hanging to dry.

One more thing to wash in this way: new do and men himos. If you're wearing a shoaizome kendogi, it doesn't matter if they leave indigo dye behind, but if you're wearing a white kendogi (or a white keikogi like we do in Naginata), the himos will leave stains the way that a new kendogi will, unless you wash them like this.

Hi andy. I just buy this kendogi. I have two question. First what do you think about salt and vinegar to fix the color? Second the hakama must be wash fold ed or not ? Thanks

Hi Andy.....I use the "Blue Moon" kendogi and it's marvelous... Do you have something equally easy care for Hakama? Something that I can easily throw in the washer and doesn't wrinkle?? Thank you very much beforehand...

Is there a difference between white and blue uniform in kendo? By that I mean does it have meaning? Rank? Sex?

Hey Andy do you have any suggestion on what type of Gi and size i should go for, when your body is skinny built and tall on the other hand? I always have the problem when I order a Gi that on my shoulders its too wide and so sleeves too long (sleeves too loose as well)! I tired it with choosing some sizes lower but it didn't made a big difference..! Any advice? Kind Regards Demian

I Have all Japan pitch deerskin kote are you sure I can soak them in water.

Yes, but not for an extended period. Up to 20 minutes like this should be no problem.

Hey Andy, I've actually found that if you use Woolite Dark, it doesn't make the color all funny. Don't know if that is a good thing to use or not, but I did wanna let you know. Does it clean out the sweat and stuff better? Or is soap just strictly something I shouldn't use? I've had a waffle gi from your shop for about 6 months washing it with that every two weeks or so and the dye is still quite good looking. It's still quite a nice even shade of dark blue.

Hi James, I don't know what Woolite Dark is, perhaps a product that we don't have here in Japan... If it works without spoiling the colour, then that's great! All I can say is that the method in this video certainly won't affect the colour in a majorly negative way :) If having done this process the Kendogi is still bleading Dye, or smells of sweat, then it can easily be repeated. Thanks Andy! It’s possible maybe you don’t get it there or maybe I got the name wrong too. :P I use that because I like the smell of the cleanliness I got the tip of that and a tiny amount of fabric softener that’s safe to use with a cotton kendogi and hakama. But I’ll try it with your method and see if it gets it clean. Cause I wanna be safe with it and not mistreat it. Those things are expensive and it’s a super nice quality (thanks for making such a good product!) and it’s my only one until I can buy another strictly for competitions.

I’m washing a polyester Hakama is there anything I need to know in terms of differences

Polyester is dyed with a synthetic dye so it should be good to go in the washing machine like any other polyester or synthetic fiber shirt. As long as it’s dyed well, it shouldn’t bleed or stain other items in the wash.

When soak it, will it turn the tag/labels of the Gi itself blue??

No, the excess dye will be too diluted with the water to stain the tags ;)
