I've been told before to use dental tablets in my toilet bowl as they break down limescale the same way they break down plaque, but I never thought about water bottles!
@allenwilson52355 ай бұрын
I was one of the first people to figure this out, and I have been passing it on for decades. I was working in a gear shop in college and water bladders had recently hit the market. Camelback had expensive cleaning tabs to sell with the bladder. We tested one out in the shop, and I realized it was the same stuff my grandma used for her dentures. I went to the grocery down the street and we tried them out. The same results for pennies.

Thanks. Camelback probably relabels a similar product with a higher price. My friends always tease me about reading contents, then looking for a more cost effective solution. 😅

@paradoxical_taco4 ай бұрын
I don’t have a Stanley - they’re absurdly expensive. I purchased a great stainless steel bottle with a 3-in-1 lid. (Bear with me on this detailed description, because it’ll make sense at the end.) It has a straw in it and two openings in the single lid. One is smaller and that’s what you use to sip from the straw. The other is wider and you use that to drink from it just as you would - for example - a 20 oz bottle of soda. Its description on Amazon says the one lid lets you both sip and chug. It has a cap that closes tightly and can be locked in place. The handle does double duty as the lock. The lid must be opened by a press of a button, and the lock/handle is for when you put it down. If it’s knocked over, the cap can’t open accidentally. It’s the most efficiently designed water bottle I’ve ever had. It keeps water ice cold for 24 hours, longer if you put a few ice cubes in it (but only a few unless you’re going somewhere really, *really* hot, otherwise, it takes forever for the ice cubes to melt.) Despite having all those features, the bottle has only three parts: the lid, the straw (which is attached to the lid), and the cap. The lockable cap and handle are on the one-piece lid. When I wash it, only the straw needs to be removed from the cap. Very easy, but I am concerned about not rinsing all the soap out. _I do have one question: is there a reason not to put the straw in the bottle when you put in the denture-cleaning tablet? Instead of scrubbing it with soap? I only use water in mine._

Denture tablets work well, but powdered dishwasher detergent works well also. I know, we are all using pods now, but if you DO happen to still use the powder (like me), then it works really well for cleaning insulated mugs, coffee pots, thermoses, etc. Works best if you can use near-boiling hot water.

@@mlewis8579 Yes, for pans using something a scrubbing powder works well, but for coffee/tea stains inside of mugs, thermoses, or insulated coffee pots where you cannot fit your hand inside, the tablets or dishwasher detergent does a great job of cleaning them up.

I'll need to check out the dental tablets for my plastic water bottles. I've used mouthwash when I wanted to do a deeper clean on them, but it kinda works into the plastic and then my water tastes a bit minty for the next several uses. But the dental tablets should in theory have even less of a taste and more importantly be even more effective at cleaning while still disinfecting
@Weeem2 ай бұрын
An alternative to dental tablets are baby bottle tablets which can be found in every local supermarket. For a small neck coffee thermos, Cafiza powder or tablets are the way to go with little to no touch. Designed to dissolve/lift deep coffee stains from impossible to reach areas like the backflush pipes in espresso machines. It's also amazing for cleaning pans :)

The dental tablets on most of the parts is fine. Where I have significant concerns is the Dawn Powerwash. As effective as that stuff is I cannot believe they won’t issue cancer warnings, hormonal issues or something in a few years. The stuff burns my nose while using it and makes me sneeze. And washing the straw with it, a porous surface, I do not believe a quick rinse adequately removed the residue it absorbs. Maybe some hydrogen peroxide (cheaper) instead, but I am not using Dawn Powerwash.
