thank u so much for this video! I'm planning to visit Japan for the first time next year. It's been a time that I got obsessed with kabuki. I was watching on KZbin with explanations in English, and it felt like watching a Yukio-e moving. The make-up and every gesture were so perfect that I loved it. I hope I can get a ticket when I go to Tokyo

went to the kabuki by accident on my last visit...just happened past the theatre and there was a queue for the lunchtime spontaneous arrivals so i joined and went in...watched about an hour and a half...i rented a device to do live translation, but was a bit hard to look at both so i just ended up watching the show,,,was pretty amazing...even if we were a bit far from the action...one thing that struck me was that occasionally a few older gents would suddenly shout something out at the performers...just a word every now and then but was pretty loud...i assume this is the done thing?
@tokyokenchan
@tokyokenchan Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your experience, especially about the English translation guide. They don't have it now at Kabukiza theater, but good to know how you thought about it. Yes, the shout is sort of officially allowed in the Kabuki world. My understanding was calling the family name of the Kabuki actors to cheer them up. I thought that has to be done from the front seat, but I usually hear from around the 3rd floor. I found an article about it (Lower bottom part is in English) : www.kabuki-bito.jp/special/more/letterfromlondon/post-letterfromlondon-post-146/

Interesting about the shouting. I was in the 4th floor in ginza where you showed and there were a couple of old guys right in front of me . Ie at the back of the third floor doing it. I think there were more but obvs they were far away :). I think the translating device won’t be missed it was more of a distraction. I’m heading back to Tokyo next month so your video was very useful as I wasn’t aware of the online booking. So I might be tempted to go back now - I may refrain from shouting at the stage though ;)
@tokyokenchan

Haha. Yes, it's a little bit surprising and I was also thinking there was a misbehaving person out there, but I learned it is a part of Kabuki culture. It can be a bit disturbing if they are sitting close by. I hope you have a great trip next month. :)

thank you so much for the video! It's so helpful for us planning for a Japan trip next year! I do have a question, if you have a set date on going to the theater, how early do you have to buy the tickets before they are all sold out? Like a week prior or even earlier? Or can we order the tickets online on the day of the show? Thank you so much and may you have a lovely day!

Thank you for watching. When I watched the full show, I bought at the counter on the day of the show, so it might be available. But it can be fully booked depending on the show and actors. I've heard that people who can't speak Japanese shouldn't worry about not knowing what's happening during a Kabuki performance because many of the Japanese people won't know what's going on either! I know that's obviously a tongue-in-cheek overstatement but it's still a funny thought

How long is a complete matinee performance? I am thinking to get this ticket rather than a single act ticket so I will be able to have a seat on a lower floor and nearer the stage - If I go to the performance and then not want to stay for the whole matinee. Is it rude to leave between the acts?
@tokyokenchan
@tokyokenchan 10 ай бұрын
It depends but about 4 hours including the 2 breaks. Current March Kabuki is 11:00 to 15:25 for day time theater, and 16:15 to 20:50 for evening theater. It might be better to fill the seat if it's very closer to the front, but otherwiese it should be ok. Even on the front, no official regulation about that.
