How to Watch Live Local Channels on Fire Stick and Fire TV Cube

How much do you spend to get local channels?

I have a large outdoor antenna for local channels that predates the local cable company. The problem is recording the channels. I tried two different Tablos and I had problems downloading the TV grid. Now I am waiting for the 4k versions to come out and then I will try again. Hopefully, the software will be better. I really like how the streaming Tablos can stream to all the TVs and devices in your house. If I had a working Tablo I would subscribe to Sling instead of KZbinTV and would save probably about $25/mo., so I am spending about $25 for local channels.

@@jensotube Use the recast box which marries to fire stick. It integrates into fire stick seamlessly and allows you to record locals channels.

My problem is two fold: wpvi (6abc Philadelphia) broadcast antenna is pointed away from South Jersey. So with an indoor antenna you can't get wpvi without losing your other local TV channels. An outdoor terrestrial antenna may work, but how to you setup to watch on 4 or more TVs? Additionally, my family is used to the xfinity x1 voice that allows them to say show channel 6 and the tuner automatically shows channel 6.

Great video. Firestick sounds pretty cool. I went another method which i think I told you before. Since I have a PC to run streaming and an OTA antenna, I use a service called PLEX which provides its own free channel content. Also I pay $5/month to PLEX to get DVR operations which was easy to setup to record onto my local hard drive. So I can now record/save any of my OTA antenna local channels. The free PLEX channels cannot be recorded to DVR. All my streaming services and OTA are displayed on a 40 inch TV screen via HDMI from PC. It is fascinating how many different ways we all can cut the cable chord and move over to streaming services. Look forward to your next video, take care.

Thanks! Yea, we like the Fire sticks. Roku is a bit cleaner, but both are good. We remember you mentioning Plex. It's a good service, if you use it right...which sounds like you are. :) Yep, agreed! It's fairly simple and straightforward.

I live in the mountains of SW Virginia and I cannot get local channels even when I had an antenna on the roof. I would get channels outs of North Carolina. An antenna is no option. Other than KZbin TV or other streaming services are there ways to get "LOCAL" stations?

Yea, we get that's definitely a challenge. Have you tried anything indoor? In our research, there are a few that claim to work, indoors, in mountain areas. The RCA Amplified indoor HDTV antenna & the ClearStream 2MAX UHF/VHF HDTV antenna for mountain areas supposedly are options. Beyond that, unfortunately a live TV streaming service would be your best option.

I have a fire cube plugged into a Hisense with Roku TV. I can't get it to switch to OTA from the Fire remote/commands. I think because of this I can't get it to scan for OTA channels. Any ideas? Redo setup maybe?

It's the storage capacity and the number of shows you want to record at once. The two tuner lets you record two shows at once, the four lets you record four.

However I do own my dish and Hopper receiver. I actually cut the chord about 5 years ago ....but I still watch my local ota antenna channels and internet network programs. Hello Amazon fire stick thank you for all that free network programs and TV streaming channels.

My questions is can you still achieve these results by using just the Five Stick and not recast? Also If you have more than 1 tv will you need these devices for each TV?

Unfortunately not. You'd need a device like Tablo, or the AirTV 2 (which you can use through Sling). We have a video on that device here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWqTiX2Fbc2WZ5o With either, it will broadcast to all of your connected TVs.

The thing that I worry about the most before I leave Directv is being able to DVR locals. Streaming services just don’t have all the shows that we might like to watch. For example my wife likes General Hospital and Hulu only has the last 5 or so. That is one reason I am leaning towards KZbinTv. The tablos or recast sounds intriguing. Can those record my channels for me? Like a TiVo device?

Yep, if you have a Fire device the Recast is a great option to record locals. We've got a video on integrating the two here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5nOhKibrbGWZ9k You can do similar with other standalone DVRs, like if you have a Roku device for example.

@@FrugalRules I am curious which DVR tuner you think is better Amazon Recast or Tablo or HDhomerun. I was thinking recast but read the video quality os less then some have complained about tuner lag on Tablo.

The issue that I have with these "LOCAL" news networks is that they're not local at all. Where I live in Florida, the so called LOCAL channels that you get, with very few exceptions, are from either Tampa, Orlando or Miami. ALL of which are around 200 miles, or more away. That's certainly not local for me.

Yea, we know you don't have an antenna and you really need one to do this right. Totally get why that's not local enough for you re: the options in something like Haystack. :) We'd feel the same way. We thought we had mentioned, but looks like we didn't, that is dependent on your local stations making it available.

DTV STREAM, Hulu Live, fuboTV, and Sling all have the channels you need to get WWE. Peacock TV is another option that also includes the premium live events.

Sling Blue + Orange would be your most affordable option for those. It's $55 a month. If you want a more premium service, KZbin TV would be a good choice at $65 a month.

Use LiveNetTV or RedboxTV and you'll get those channels and another 30 to 40 more. You'll have to search ESPN but it will come up on both apps. So will ESPN2
