If you needed to only replace the thermostat, would you still need to take everything apart you did to change the water pump? Or would you remove less things to just change the thermostat?
@araparts10 күн бұрын
Yes, you would remove less things to remove the thermostat. The thermostat is halfway into the job. The motor mount will still have to come out. You can leave the lower bracket.

Great helpful step by step video. Did my wife's 2017 RX which had a bearing leak. We live in the rusty belt, but had no corrosion issues with the bolts. The engine mount was a bear, lots engine raising/lower to walk the mount out & back into from the various studs. A small pry bar from underneath helped to lift assembly from the studs. The ABS line training did cover up the back bolts a bit more than the video, needed a swivel w/ some painters tape on the socket end to capture/hold the bolts. Also added short 1/4" ratchet to the tool list, sped up the pump bolt removal/install. Did add coolant once the hoses were re-attached to check for leaks; ahead of re-installing the mount hardware. Ours took just over two gallons. Did parallel this video with another one from a Lexus shop that only showed the re-install. Overall, took 8 hours & only had 1 casualty. Upon reconnecting the battery, the infotainment screen didn't come back w/ the scan tool showing no comm to the module. On to that problem.

Did you figure out what was wrong with the infotainment screen?

The shorter version (at least per the auto electronics repair facility), there is a radio head board failure issue with a vintage of Lexus models with Pioneer radio head units. The board failure can occur at anytime with the vehicle, the radio/infotainment will work fine up to the point of cycling DC power - then one will get the black screen & no radio response. Presently I've pulled the entire radio/HVAC as a complete unit & it is in transit to the repair facility (found one in New York state) Longer version: The DC system on our RX has never been dropped since new. When I replace a battery, I float the DC system with a variable DC supply. For the water pump, I did drop the DC because I had to remove the ECU for clearance to get the motor mount out. Post failure, went through some Radio reboot procedures I found, no response. Did a subscription to All-Data for the wiring diagrams, the many fuses associated with the system checked good. DC was present (1 direct, 2 indirect) to the radio connector. Checked w/ a neighbor who owns/works on many Toyota/Lexus models, he never heard of the issue. He checked with a Lexus mechanic friend, and yes they've seen this before. They attempt to find a available unit here in the Chicago area, that came up empty. For Lexus to send the unit out for repair, the price tag came out to $2700...some dealers send it back to the Pioneer facility. In parallel, I searched out repair facilities; found - one west coast, one east coast. Talked to the east coast facility, the owner was very familiar with the failure mode. He also recognized my dealer as some will use his non-OEM repair facility. Was slightly higher in price for the board replacement than the west coast, but the list of models repaired, published turnaround time and talking with the owner swayed me that way. Mailed the unit two days ago, expect it to arrive by weeks end. Should be getting a call early next week for status.

@@markl3028 Wow, that really stinks. Thanks for your reply. I have a 2017 RX350 but fortunately don't have a leaking water pump or trouble with my infotainment system, but it's nice to have this information in case I ever do run into a problem.

Great video, Very helpful. Putting the belt on was easy once I figured out the tensioner has a stop key to hold the tensioner compressed until the belt is in place. Thank You!
@araparts3 ай бұрын
Glad the video helped! I didn’t use the stop key method in the video, but that is an excellent way to keep the tensioner compressed.

Hi, thanks for the video. Does the timing chain need to come out in order to do water pump job? Or is the water pump job just require the drive belt to come off? Just wondering if I need to mess with timing or not.
@araparts14 күн бұрын
No need to mess with the timing chain. Only the drive belt comes off.

So, you dont have to remove the ac compressor, and pull the engine half way out of the engine bay for this job?

Nope 👍

Excellent video, wondering how many miles and age when your water pump failed?
@araparts4 ай бұрын
This had about 85k miles when it started leaking.

Looks like it might make sense to just replace the entire thermostat while you're in there. I would even consider belt tensioner, pullies, and belt. Not a job I want to do twice.

Will the ECU be operational when plugged back in or will it need a diagnostic tool from the dealer to program it to work?
@araparts8 ай бұрын
It'll be fine. There was no check engine light, and the modules that show any errors will eventually redo their self test and update on their own. There was no check engine light, etc. I used an Xtools D7 ODBII scanner to erase the error codes from the modules immediately.

do you remember what the torque specs were for the water pump pulley and tensioner pulley?
@araparts6 ай бұрын
I never removed the tensioner, and don’t have the torque specs unfortunately. I do believe it’s reverse threaded (“lefty tighty righty loosey”).

How long it took to replace the water pump?

Book time is around 10 hrs. I would expect this to take that long. Longer for the first time.

Will a 17' IS350 sport be the same ?
@araparts3 ай бұрын
Not really. The only similarity the 2 generations share is that the 2017 IS350 has a newer version of the 2grfse (2018+ got the 2grfks motor). The transmission and everything else is different.

That’s not easy regular water pump to replace it. You have to know what you doing. It’s hard to do in the shop. Do you imagine if you do on the floor how hard will be and how long will take?Lexus warranty is paid almost 9 hours and it takes almost a day if you do first time. So you saved $2,500 labor right there.
