You can use the iron to make the jacket warmer so the wax goes on better. Make sure the iron doesn’t touch areas that already have wax.

Walker and hawkes do a softer wax similar to the barbour thornproof, it goes on so much faster and easier than a hard block. I used to use pure beeswax blocks the same way you're doing it here though and it does work well.

I used to own a Barbour Thorn proof. I really miss it. Don’t ask why I don’t have it anymore.😢. Does it really affect the look and feel? I just got a German army flektarn jacket in desert cammo. It’s super nice, but not waterproof. More of a wind proof garment. I want to wax it, but I don’t want it to have a thick wax like the Barbour.

Thanks for the video. You seem to be the only person who wanted to make a video regarding waxing the M-65. I've used Kiwi camp dry on my second hand ones and I've been looking for something a little more robust for my current one, which has never been treated. I was worried that the particular fabric might not wax well, but I'm not worried anymore.

Thanks for the video. For me, the blowdryer did not work on my cotton hat. Even after 2 hrs in the clothes dryer (in a pillow case) and numerous passed on hi and hot w/the blowdryer, the hat still looked like I had just applied the wax (I used Otter Wax.) Then I realized I had a bunch of lighters from when I smoked, I just took a long neck lighter and melted the wax. Experience tip: if u angle the fabric to a nearby light source, u can see the flame melt the wax and it impregnate the fabric. Also, u can see the excess "pooling" atop the fabric. Just wipe that with your finger. Also from my chemistry days, use the hottest part of the flame where the blue becomes yellow on the fabric. But most definitely use a constant swaying motion bc u can weaken the threads.

It depends on how often you wear it and how rugged the environment is and how often you wash the jacket. But generally it can last 1 year if you don't wash it and would like to say that with a lot of jackets it will only make it a very good shower proof. The wax is from a swedish company and it works best in dry snow. No more that 2 layers or 1 layer if the weave of the material is very tight. Hope this helps 👍

Did you wax your ventile jacket? Kestrel smock. Is there a need to wax a ventile jacket. I have a keela ventile jacket similar to the Kestrel design. Also could you just drop the jacket in the tumble dryer after waxing? Great content keep up the good work.
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty 2 жыл бұрын
No I wouldn't wax the ventile kestrel smock because of the waterproof liner sewn inside it. There is no need to wax ventile material but I thought I'd try it but really I'm not going to bother again. As for the dryer? I've never done it, I hang all my clothes up, its cheaper. However thinking about it I suppose the wax would melt and make it's way back to the surface of the jacket so best not to do that I think.

Hello, I have a winterjacket that has an outer shell of 100% polyester and had a small wax layer on it. This is now gone after one year. Should I reapply or is that not necessary for polyester? It's still waterproof, but quite hesitant as I don't want to stain or ruin my coat. Thanks
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty 2 жыл бұрын
Re- apply, don't melt the wax in with an iron though, polyester? Dodgy. Us hair dryer and be careful it doesn't melt it. Alternatively you could try "wash in nikwax" which is easier and is used on a synthetic wash at 30°C. Have a go at what you fancy doing. Hope this helps 👍

I did an old Barbour with their wax,great wax but when I did an surplus smock,which is 50/50 polycotton, I went with paraffin wax candles,as the Barbour wax was too thick for the thiner cloth.You can control the thickness you want,and retain some breathability.Hot air gun on low heat gently heating the wax till it soaks through as video shows.Had good results with car seat stainproofing solution as well,but on synthetic .

Andy, How does waxing affect breathability of the jacket? Can trousers be waxed? Will waxing interfere with anti-infrared resins in military uniforms? If so, can the wax go on the inside of the jacket? Good information.
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty 2 жыл бұрын
It might take some breathability away but not to the extent that it's like wearing a plastic bag so over all it's worth it to do so. How ever I have to say that it only gives you some water repellentcy in some jackets not waterproof, I have tested this with a few different jackets. Yes you can do trousers, as for anti infared I wouldn't know. When I served we all washed, ironed and starched our uniform and nobody gave a dam about that. If the jacket is a single layer it can go on the inside but there's no point, to get that wax on is quite a laborious job. Hope this helps you out Jeff 👍

@@rex7020 thanks for the information, I've waxed various jackets and found that the tighter and better the weave the more water resistant it is. The SAS smock made of gabardine was brilliant but a cheep reproduction of the SAS smock was a disaster in the rain. I made some videos on it.

Two questions: 1. For how long does this wax lasts? 2. After a year or so since waxing, or may be before, can you wash the jacket? Thank you for the video, really good!
@Andy-walkaboutnutty
@Andy-walkaboutnutty 4 жыл бұрын
The wax on the jacket can last up to a year maybe more, depending how often you wear it in bad weather and how bad the weather is. 2 layers of wax is ideal I think but it all depends on what jacket. The fjallraven jackets are ideal for waxing but some jackets like the SAS smock doesn't take very well to waxing and only 1 layer of wax is enough because it just doesn't sink into the material so easily because it is a very tight weave, same with ventile material. If you wash the jacket that's when the wax starts to thin out and eventually you have to re-wax, or leave the jacket in the sun for a very long time. Eather the material fades or the wax disintegrates I'm not sure but Waxing is the best way, far more superior to the silicon sprays which are a waste of time and money.

Yes I should imagine so, the jacket in the video is an M65 American field jacket and is made of 50% cotton 50% nylon and it sunk in ok. @@dannythorne9761 just clean it as per normal weather it be a quick light wash or a normal 40 degree and re-wax it when required. If you are doing a military thing then it's best to have 2 jackets, 1 for ordinary training and parade and the waxed one for serious outdoor training. You should by rights have a light waterproof underneath your combat jacket as well. The wax will only resist the rain for so long then it will come through eventually depending what the jacket is like. I did 2 videos on testing a cheap SAS smock and an original SAS smock from the 1980s/90s and waw what a difference in waterproof qualities. Easier definitly, nikwax wash in? I don't think it would be as good but it's a close call I think. Though you can add layers this way because your application is put on when dry. Not sure you can add layers with nikwax plus with the #fjallraven Greenland wax you could use 10 times on a #smock size garment and could last you a few years rather just 1 wash for roughly the same price.
