Ever wondered how other guys are seamlessly pulling off the sweater over shirt look while you look like you just broke free out of a straight jacket? well keep watching, in this video I’m going to show you how to tackle each of the problems we face when trying to layer a sweater over a collared shirt. let’s get started.
The first crucial step to pull this look off comfortably while also not limiting your range of movement is choosing the right shirt.
Choose a shirt that has a stretch fabric material or consider purchasing a performance shirt if you easily get hot underneath.
Next, find a shirt that fits closest to your body. wearing a shirt that’s too baggy will look sloppy underneath the sweater and can give the illusion of appearing heavier.
I personally like to go slimmer than usual when layering over a sweater but once again, make sure the shirt has fabric stretch material as well.
Now that you have your well fitting shirt, it’s time to tuck it in and lock it in place. for this step, we are going to be using a shirt stay which is a very cheap accessory that will eliminate the headaches of re-tucking in your shirt, as well as stopping the shirt from billowing all over your stomach area.
Now that we got our shirt tucked, locked, and ready for layering. it’s time to finally throw on that sweater. for this step patience is key. slowly start with the sleeves by sliding the fabric up close to your arm and repeat for the other side.
once both arms are inserted, grab both sides of the neck area from top to bottom and slide your head in. From here, adjust as needed once the sweater is on but be careful to not overstretch the fabric.
If your placket does not hold up well against the sweater, then I highly suggest you add a Million Dollar Collar to your shirt which is another cheap accessory that adds new life to your dress shirts. I feel stupid just by thinking about trying this style. In my office I only ever wear hoodies, other guys just wear sweaters. Fortunately for me, we don't need to dress up but yeah, gotta start some day... My confidence is too low.

You can make the hoodie look more refined and polished as well if you choose the right fit and fabric. Also, Don’t feel stupid about trying new things. I understand the worry of being called out by your peers for trying something different than your traditional attire so I suggest you first gradually introduce it to your work place like wearing just the sweater over a t-shirt and then eventually over a polo and then a nice collared dress shirt. You can make it casual but slightly elevated while being better dressed than everyone. You may even even be the one to raise the bar and everyone else will follow!

I personally stay true to size for both. It’s not like the shirt will be so thick that you would need to size up

Quick question, can you untuck the caller so that it overlaps the sweater? I always opt to tuck mine in but I'm wondering if it's feasible to untuk it. Or does it look try hard? I understand that anyone can do whatever they like, but I'm curious on what the rule is.

It looks cleaner with having the collar tucked in but if you were to have a shorter collar (example a polo shirt) then it will work since it doesn’t heave any structure like a dress collar shirt does.

I always use shirt stays as well to keep the shirt tucked before adding a light sweater over the dress shirt. The final layer with the navy sport coat on top of all of that is a clean look no doubt! Good look man loving the earth tones!

A simple trick I personally do for putting on the sweater is hold the shirt sleeves with your thumb
