You can sew them together into various projects! A project I'm working on is a bag, which consists of a front panel of 9 squares arranged 3x3, an identical back panel, and a strip of squares in another color down the sides and as a strap.

Granny squares are a GREAT analogy for these! Yes, you could make a blanket with them, or a number of other projects. Scarves, purses, a soft checkers set, slip-on notebook covers, placemats, potholders... for single squares, they could be coasters or mug rugs
