Another great video of your build. I appreciate the way you emphasize the fact that folks can often do more than they think they can on their own rigs. In my experience whether it has been my Harleys, hot rods, or now my Jeep, if I do my homework and take my time I can do most anything that needs done on my own stuff. Keep on keeping on. I also appreciate how you tie your faith into your efforts. A walking testimony shows the truth you are trying to live.

That was a master class on welding dissimilar metals, the smoking part to avoid weld spatter on the gearset was the best part. I think your sway bar will be better if you elongate the vertical links to run it as close to horizontal as your deflection will allow. Looks like it might get to binding positions with the bar at a 30 and the links that short

99 percent of Land Rovers use a normal U joint rear drive shaft. Quick junkyard fix is 1987-1993-ish Range Rover rear drive shaft and pinion yoke, bolts right in. 1980's and older Rovers use normal 1310 Ujoints. These later models use small 1300 series joints. The flange pattern is the same for all, way back to 1948, and many old American vehicles use this patern. I use high angle forged steel 1310 yokes with Spicer life sealed 1310 joints on mine. The orb of traction rules!!!!, got my old Rover up Mickeys hot tub and Rock Pile on Pritchett canyon decades ago....😁😁

I think you should've moved the sway bar mounts on the axle inboard so the ends of the sway bar are closer to the mounts. There is considerable moment in your arrangement and the mounts are going to be taking more torsion than before. The mounts may twist off due to repeated torsion loading.

The way to fix the drivetrain is to completely replace it with something far more rugged. A better way to get the nut in place in the spring retainers is to weld the nut in place instead of making a custom tool or having to fight it into place later.

@donhappel9566Ай бұрын
You're right. It's not "that" tiny but it's small. With good 300m shafts and aftermarket difs I've kept mine alive on 39.50 Iroks, but it's waaaay too much - you have to be very careful. I generally tell people not to go over 35" even with upgrades unless you are willing to break things. Rover also had their own "one ton" axle called a Salisbury which is basically a dana 60 but it never came under the Disco. And stock it only had 24 spline shafts. As for the lug nuts, yeah...huge. May only be a 5 lug, but they are 16mm studs (almost 5/8) and on a very large bolt circle of 6.5" so lots of strength there. Of course hard to find aftermarket wheels for that pattern.

On this full floater axle the diff oil does NOT oil the wheel bearing, that is why there is a seal land on the axle shaft and a corresponding seal in the axle tube. Earlier axles were like this on LRs... And some remove the seal in later LR to revert to the older, better system. For your axle it should have grease on the wheel bearing and it will remain separate from the axle oil. Or you can pull the stub axle and remove the seal. As you have it now then the wheel bearing won't have any lubrication.

A Good Ol' Fashion Rear Locker!
@isomer13Ай бұрын
Thanks, Colt.
@callumkingunderwoodАй бұрын
For a budget build, Lincoln locker is the way The general preference in the UK on discos is keep the stock axle and put either the Ashcroft ATB or an Ashcroft air locker in there. The Ashcroft air locker has 4 spider gears rather than 2. They also do a 4 pin open centre. The ATB being a helical setup works differently, but has 6 pairs. On the defenders, from factory on certain models they came with what was known as a Salisbury axle rather than a Rover axle. The Salisbury was just a right side offset (for us over here driver, for you guys passenger) Dana 60 rear axle with Landrover brackets on it. I suppose a Dana 60 could be slapped on a discovery but the defenders weren't watts linkage or identical control arm mounts, nothing beyond your abilities but I suppose not in the budget. Other stuff available out here includes stuff like disc conversions for that parking brake (which usually gets you more ground clearance) and uprated rover axle shafts. Transfer cases really need attention but upgraded parts do exist if need be including changing that open centre diff with locker out for an ATB with locker, or changing the high range ratio in the transfer case as that isn't actually 1:1. Low range isn't typically changed on them. Split spool conversions are also available for converting the diff lock fiction into a RWD/4WD selector instead. Terrafirma also make a lot of stuff. Have considered their coil over conversion on my discovery 3/LR3 with an air suspension leak, buuut the air suspension works and it'll probably be cheaper to fix the leak than buy coilovers.
@donhappel9566Ай бұрын
All good points. Here in the states we never run stock shafts as they are just too puny. I run Ashcroft's 300m with their dif front and rear, while the front shafts are custom with a 30 spline outer that accaptes an RCV joint with a custom drive flange. I've broken a few of the Ash 300Ms even when being very careful as I'm running a 39.50 tire on my Disco. I'm prepping a set of Sals for 35 spline, custom width, alloy shafts, and Willwood brakes using parts from Forbyn Brothers and Timm Cooper as part of my winter upgrade plans. As for Terrafirma, not a big fan. I've found most of their stuff to be very light-duty; not up to US rock crawling. I do like Adrenaline4x4, Ashcroft, and Duraflex back in the homeland though among. others. And I don't get people wanting to change the high range. I run a 50% reduction low range as I want a bigger spread between high and low and that helps me not have to run weaker dif gears. Ideally I'd want a 1:1 high and about a 4 or 5:1 low for a good spread
@lyndonwortley6329Ай бұрын
Salisbury/Dana 60 axles were very rare on 90s, 110s and Defenders (in fact I am struggling to think of any fitted as standard bar SV builds) but were standard fitment on the rear of Series 111 long wheelbase landies. They are narrower than later axles however so not an option for Colt.
@donhappel9566Ай бұрын
@@lyndonwortley6329 No, wouldn't recommend a Sals for this build, just mentioned it in passing as a potential upgrade route once somebody max'es out the standard Rover housing. But honestly unless you're going to build it up internally it's not much of an upgrade with the small 24 spline shafts plus you loose a lot of diff clearance. Don't think I've ever seen a Sals under a 90 stock. Yes on some 110s but mostly the HiCap. Also on the 101s where I believe there were front and rear. (been a while on that one).

Pretty common, just not in the Dana world. Toyota of course does it, but the best known are the Ford 9" (and the smaller 8" that nobody uses) Same deal in the front, the Rovver (and yota, and a lot of commercial trucks) don't have open knuckles with u-joints, they have a fully enclosed knuckle called a swivel ball and run a CV joint. Or Birfield in yota speak.

6:45 chances are your tyres were spinning as those vehicles depend on the brakes(traction control) instead of having lockable diffs. If your brakes are bad, you are not going far. I think now that the diff is welded, you are way more likely to break an axle of hardy spicer. Ironically the open diff is protective.

These third members are basically the same as in my 1958 series I Land Rover, the "Penalty Box". I run 3.5 ratio (28 tooth ring gear, 8 tooth pinion) ring and pinions, Modded a set of Ashcroft billet air lockers to run my own custom 1.400" 32 spline shafts front and rear, and have beat the ever loving S**T out of them from Fordyce to Coyote Canyon, Pritchett Canyon to Bronco Falls, and many other trails all over the west. Now, my 1958 model has much larger front knuckle balls, allowing much larger front axle joints than the coil sprung Rovers can fit. IMHO, The old Rover differentials , equipped with coarse cut gears like mine, have more strength potential than old school (real) Dana 44's. Actually by a fair margin. Too bad the coil versions have much smaller knuckles than my old 1958 model.
