Fellow pipe welder from down around where y’all are. We know a lot of the same guys. But question on this because itd help a lot of these guys who’re watching to learn. What about on the bottom where you’re more than likely going to get suck back, or concave root as the aws terms? Can’t back feed it to make sure you have metal on the bead. Make a video on that showing them how to face feed a tight gap on the bottom in 5 and 6g positions.

Good tip. Real world problem solving from experience. I like the fact you use old pipe too. Cause that's exactly what you're finding on the job.

I'm a retired union boilermaker just run the tungsten along the bottom of the tube with no filler wire really quick and it will burn a little of the bevel off used to do it all the time in the field and the tubes were x-rayed

Amasing advice, and very new to me! Thank you, Sir! (I have a little remark to add to this: x-ray testing is not the most strict way of testing pipes after welding: I worked for one company in a potash mine expansion project, and they tested us with ultrasonic. I swear that ultrasonic is the hardest testing for welders, it has which no mercy to the slightest non-fusion that x-ray cannot typically catch; many welders after coming to that work-site had to readjust their way of welding stainless with TIG.)

@@alekrudy5993 I know I'm late but I always felt UT was easier. Except one time on a 54" weld that kept busting so the x-rayed it and there was a void in the fitting about 3/4" outside the bevel.

I do this all the time even with the same heat just open a key hole with the heat and dip the wire I hate to open shit up with the grinder all it does its make shit worst

Had my first Tig ticket in mid 70s and I've put roots in every way you can think of while you can do it this way you'll run into big problems first one is suckback on ohead but worst is distortion positional ,beginners out there do yourself favor and learn how to weld holding the wire inside the gap

I have a quick question. I gap my pipe with a 5/32 aluminum rod welding carbon. my question is this sometimes when I'm putting my hot pass metal leave the piece and covers my tungsten do you think it's the aluminum that causes that
@beaker17367 жыл бұрын
getting your tungsten to close , even if you dont dip but get it close enough to the molten puddle you can watch metal jump to your tungsten and no its not because of the aluminum

I watch for the key hole on a 6g. Obviously purging. I'm always worried about suck back on my hot pass. Gravity does it's thing. Tons of practice over the years. Get the root mastered! Then work the cup!

I’d just cut it open with a thin disc then feather the tie ends !!!!!!! Why risk it closing up and not break the wall down ?????? I’ve done it this way and I know it works but it’s still a risky way of welding especially if it’s on the bottom..... I’d do this kind of technique at a paper mill or shipyard but never at a oil refinery or chemical plant ..... taking risk is how you end up with a high repair rate and a bad name, tight gaps and a sexy firewatch will get your money everytime!!!!!!!!

Roll Tide welding pipe is risky business. In itself.. Some times just knowing how to do something a different way is worth knowing. We are just showing different tips and Tricks

not to argue with you but it can,,,, and we do.... its the same principle... maybe you should try it before saying its impossible..
@krs17327 жыл бұрын
I don't know how to do what you do on the bottom because I don't know the torch and rod angle and whatever else you need to know how to do it. You should have shot the video showing how to put in the root on the bottom 4 to 8 o'clock area instead of the side or the top. those are the easy spots.
@WELDorDIE7 жыл бұрын
KRS 1 ok we will make a video showing it for you... it's the same as on top and sides. Are you wanting to learn this or just doubting its validity....We don't mind helping anyone willing to learn the impossible.

That's really nice of you but I don't want you to trouble your self. Making these kind of videos must be time consuming and all that. If you say it works on the bottom then I'll take your word for it. I was skeptical of it though because I figured most the filler rod metal will be dripping downward and on to the outside of the bevel on the face and not much on the inside of the pipe on the root. How you push the melted rod up to build up a convex root when you dip it into the puddle was what got me puzzled on how you do this. I'm guessing you have to have the tungsten/torch pointing almost straight up like you were doing overhead when you dip your rod into the puddle in order to push the metal up and keep it from sagging down.

That will not work on the bottom you will get a suck back bead and if you can do it show a video but I don't think we will be seeing that
