I think you coulda cleaned those inner rocker panels and then sprayed a weld-through primer! Then no need for redrilling to clean before plug welding. I also primed all hidden parts of the pan, torque boxes, subframe ears, etc. with epoxy. Maybe overkill but....

Good idea! I plan on pouring POR down the rockers...

I used the Eastwood Internal Frame Coating for the inside but sanded the outside of the inner rocker panels and sprayed weld through primer!

Do you need to remove the E-coat before applying POR-15 or is it ok to apply POR-15 on top of E-coat? Thanks i really needed to ask you that question

I’ve got a ‘64 and am about to replace my pan, probably going the route of this full length pan. I’ve watched your videos on this a number of times and might do something a bit different. Instead of putting this in as one piece, what are your thoughts on quartering it and doing each of the four separately, removing the old and welding in the new in quarters? Butt weld them all together. I’m concerned about maintaining structural rigidity of trucklet with the whole floor removed and, easing the single piece installation that you experienced. Thoughts?

Looking good. The top two things that you can do to make you welds better and to make you spout less 4 letter words while doing it... First is a magnifying lens for your helmet. If yours doesn't have the clips for it don't worry just buy it and tape it to the inside or use the existing screws and washers to hold it in place. The other is a really bright light on the weld. This will help immensely with seeing the puddle. With those two things your weld area will look allot bigger than it is and closer than it is and with the light you will eliminate some of that initial shaded puddle and just make everything easier to see. There are lights that mount to the mig torch but I was not impressed. I have made my own mig welding light which is way better and adjustable. Just need to work on a professional way to attach it to the torch and thinking of trying to market it. It's in the hacked prototype stage at the moment...

Ha ! I was welding tonight struggling with how to keep a bright head lamp positioned on the weld area, and moving it around as needed. Thought about adding it to the end of the torch, but I remembered an old flashlight design that was like a flexible snake. Plan on finding something like that and adding a magnet to the end.

Liked the answer to the self tap screw hole fill. I went at it the first time earlier tonight and seemed to fill them - from the top. Tomorrow I'll get under there and see what the underside looks like. Might need to hit with the welder from the bottom like you said.

You are replacing the floor pan with a full floor pan. What is different if you salvage the tunnel and replace rotted metal with the 1/2 floor pan
@oacumulador
@oacumulador 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That's the more common for the average guy at home. I'm think he wanted to show how to change the whole pan, he said never done before. Not because it really needed. Just to show how to... I think..

I've done both and replacing the entire pan is MUCH easier. Its 10x more welding when patching over replacing.

The center tunnel had some additional damage that I went over a while back. Plus the wells at the rear seat area (under the bed) were trashed.

How did I not find your channel??? Im doing floor board too....on a ....(drum roll) RANCHERO! Its bad though...really bad, (I mean, arent all Rancheros bad in this area?) So I wanted to ask for some advice. Im stick welding (its what I have) plus Im very new to welding. I just finished my first actual repair of a rust hole. I tried doing a perimeter weld (butt weld) but I kept blowing out the thin rusted metal, which meant increasing the patch size and just tacking around to where it wasnt moving anyone at all. Is using seam seaer and tacking around with some areas of a full line, enough to keep moisting out of the cab? I will be uploading that vid tomorrow, and this isnt about views or whatnot (I dont care about that anymore), but I would like some tips, if what Im doing is just horrible (I know it aint good but at least if it wasnt the worst youve seen...that would make a vet happy!)

Jeff, thank you for another great video. I had a full floor pan that was replaced and it was not welded in correctly. It does not appear level. Drivers side is much higher than passengers side. I bought the 68 cougar seat risers too. The transmission cross brace wasn't welded to the floor. It's a nightmare. Do you think subframe connectors would help or does the floor need to be cut out and redone? All the welds look like popcorn welds and they didn't grind down the epoxy paint or rust before they welded.
