Just my 2 pennies... I'm a Licensed General Contractor, I work on restaurants, we do everything from remodel to total back of house roll outs, I by no means am a certified welder, did not grow up doing it and did not not to school for it either. That being said... I have to weld sometimes on the job and weld at home for myself. For all the haters... make a video and help the "lay persons" instead of trying to cut this young man down for trying to help others and saving us time and materials for something we may not have known! sorry sport, but the haters are absolutely right. welding needs to be taught in person, not in a video. this guy welds dog turds. if someone just wants to figure some things out, go to weld.com. that guy is a genius and an instructor. he is humble, makes mistakes like everyone else and lays out beautiful welds.

I've used a spot welder with a lot of success. It makes a clean weld. If I need a stronger weld, I lay a heat sink across the piece and weld every 4 expansions or so. Then I go back to where I started and fill in the un welded parts every 4 expansions or so until I've got the whole thing done. It's very clean and looks professional.

I made a fire ring out of a large truck rim and covered the holes with expanded metal. I wish I had seen this video BEFORE I began the project. With that said, I did figure it out really quick. But boy I was surprised the first time my arc hit the expanded metal and it instantly evaporated!

I had to weld some expanded metal to some 1/8th thick angle tonight for a tool tray I'm making. What a PITA. I'm definitely not the greatest welder, but I can usually stick two pieces of metal together. I finally got it. Doesn't look as good as yours, but it's good enough for my purposes.

I am a welder. I have done fabrication and am currently on a project where I'm welding thicker to thinner. Quarter inch to 1/8 inch or less. I can lay perfect welds. But on this project I cannot seem to lay a good weld at all. I'm wondering if you have a good voltage setting and wire speed I can use? This is a new job for me and I enjoy its concept and so I do not want to look like I can't weld. Any useful setting guys? We are also using tungsten wire which I've never used. Always copper feed.

I'm trying to weld a 16 gauge pipe to 18 gauge one in vertical position with a stick welder but its not working too well. Can u recommend a way to weld and also replace all 18 gauge eaten away?

I do the same thing with stick welder, tack to tack, on same expanded metal type, thin and size, and I'am just hobby welder, but use the same approach to the problem, is logical in fact, Thx for this advice, I see now I'am doin on the right way :)

I have a thick metal 19mm drain plug I'm trying to weld onto an transmission oil pan which measured to approx. 16 gauge. My welding is a Hobart Auto Arc 130 which is rated up to 3/16" using flux core wire. My welding experience is with stick and have little experience with MIG. Settings for 16 gauge metal using .030 flux wire is 2/20 & 2/25 (voltage / wire feed). The problem is when using the settings for 16 gauge there's little penetration for the thicker nut. I suppose I can try turning the pan so the lower part of the weld (90 deg.) is the nut instead of the pan as the weld seems to effected by gravity. However I'm wondering what else I should be doing? I think I can try mutli passes. The problem seems to be not enough penetration for the nut. I tried changing the setting for thicker metal such as 3/I6+ however it started to melt the pan. Perhaps I should try changing the settings for 14 or 12 gauge would product better penetration of the thicker nut?

I want to just braze thin metal to thick metal. Rebar to support a grill grate for my fire pit. Is that possible? I don't want to buy an expensive set up. I have a brazing torch. Or, do you think I should just take my project to a welding shop? Lol... Thanks

In fact this is a good way for welding such materials,but some experts people said that the corrosion in this case could destroy the mesh,so,they advise about fixing the mesh using rivets or something like that.What do you think about this? Regards

Clean it and either have it hot-dip zinc galvanized, powder-coat it, or use spray galvanizing. Not sure how well powder coating will do in the crevices though.

I saw some chicken houses that had 1/2-in square tubing with 1/2-in wire mesh welded to it and I wondered how they welded that My guess is maybe they used some sort of a braising rod and acetylene??

How can I weld screen material without melting away the screen with my mig welder. I see videos with an electrode without a rod that seems to bind the material with quick bursts. Hobart handler 210 is good it can run off 110 or 220 with flux core wire or gas and regular wire and easily weld 1/4"

On thinner gauge tube and SMAW, try and go electrode negative (DCEN). The faster deposition rate will help from burning thru as quickly on the base metal.

One nice tip is to put a strong magnet on the thinner sheet of metal so it pulls the molten metal on the thin metal when you weld. BTW thats a chool tip that you showed on the video.

How do I do the same with stick welding, I tried it and melted away the expanded metal. 😂. Also I was not successful welding rebar with a stick welder. The bar would get red hot but not weld .... With the mig it was easier.

tsbrownie It would be the same, basically. Just slightly work the molten pool over to the thin stuff. Start your bead about 1/2" away from the thin material, then work it over in spots. Like he said though... You can't do this for long spans. The metal gets too hot. Manipulating the molten pool is what makes you a good welder.

If you are working in a workshop you would be best go with the MIG welder also the Mig is much easier to learn if you have no experience. If you are working a lot outside you will probably need to use the arc welder but it takes more time to master in my experience !

Your Ground Clamp is in the Wrong Place, that's Why People Burn Through The "EXPANDED STEEL", Put Your GROUND CLAMP on the Angle Iron Instead. Always Put Your Ground Clamp on the THICKER METALS.. Also Make Sure Your Polarity Is Set Up Right...
