Learn how to do common whipping. Easy step by step instructions for tying whipping on a ropes end in this knot tying video tutorial.
Common whipping is the simplest whipping method but not the strongest or most secure whipping knot. Sometimes called wolf whipping it is very similarly tied to the hangman's noose knot. Commonly done with whipping twine or waxed twin, this knot is knot #3442 in the Ashley Book of Knots (ABoK). Made by laying a bite along the rope and wrapping a series of turns over it. The working end is tucked through the loop and pulled down under the wraps. The ends are then trimmed off.
This is just one of many whipping methods including: sailmaker's whipping, palm and needle whipping, sailors whipping, west country whipping, riggers whipping, french whipping, crown whipping and Portuguese whipping.
Uses and advantages: Obviously used to stop a rope's end from fraying, but can also be used as a decorative or ornamental wrapping knot around a post or pole. The main advantage is that it is easy to learn and fast to make.

I'll be the first one to admit it's easy to critique but two things I wanted to point out. 1. Its not clear that you make two bends in the twine AND when you start the wraps with the long end, the bend on this end must loop over the rope, otherwise you'll have a bend on only one side of the rope like the other bend in the twine. (unless you did this by accident) 2. When you put the bitter end of the twine through the last bend, you came in through the back and created an elbow. If you go in through the front of the bend, when you pull the bend under the wraps, it will lay flatter. Again, it's easy to criticize. Thanks for the video.

Used this knot on 1 1/2" rope that runs along a boardwalk with the ocean. It works wonderfully...has held and lasted for about 7 yrs now.

Thanks for doing this video. I taught my kids this technique. I first saw it in 8th grade from a kid from Texas that whipped a rope in front of the students for a demonstration type speech in speech class. Speech class was torture for some. Including me, until I played the harmonica and was able to get in front of a big audience. My demonstration was how to hang wallpaper. Wallpapering was my first job outside retail stores

If you like a perfectly smooth end with no whipping material, you could do what I do. I wrap the very end of the rope with thread temporarily and then add a few drops of thin CA glue. That type of glue works well to wick down the bunched up fibers. Then I remove the thread and you end up with a hardened end that is nice and smooth and won't easily unravel. You could also use the technique shown here using the finer thread and simply leave it on and use the CA just to harden the end of the rope.

Why do you wrap the twine around in the opposite direction of the rope? Wouldn't it make more sense to wrap it in the same direction so that as you're wrapping the twine so you're tightening the end of the rope?

Thank you for this presentation. However your initial image shows the whipping much closer to the end of the rope, whilst your demonstration is not close enough to prevent the end of the rope fraying. I appreciate it is only a demonstration of the knot, but I think it is better to I place the loop pointing along the rope away from the end. This allows the start the whipping to be placed as close to the end of the rope as needed with the first turn rather than the last. This change makes the length of the wipping less of an issue and hence the precise length of the initial twine (which is difficult to judge without quite a lot of experiance).

Any guidance for min and max size of the whip string related to the size of the rope you are whipping? I assume you now cut off the frayed end a little closer to the whipping. How much extra should you leave past the end of the whip? Thoughts on the comparison of wrapping the end of the rope with a fiber reinforced duck tape vs whipping? Or a little resin + duct tape. Sailors didn’t have duct tape when whipping was invented. Or maybe better, a thermal shrinking sleeve like used to cover wire solder joints?
@stephenwoods4118
@stephenwoods4118 2 жыл бұрын
Duct tape degrades over time, a couple of years exposure to the elements and it's toast, even if kept in a box after 10 years the adhesive has started to fail and make a mess.

Question: The whipping looks nice, but are there any special reasons I would choose this over a simple overhand knot?
@srdavis37
@srdavis37 5 жыл бұрын
Also, the overhand knot now makes a large lump at the end that prevents the rope from pulling smoothly across/through other ropes or eyelets.
