How to Whittle Little People Part 3 - Complete Beginner Whittling Lesson

This video is part 3 (of 3) in the How to Whittle a Little Person - Complete Beginner Whittling Lesson series. These video lessons are designed to help the complete beginner whittler complete their first project. As a lesson (as opposed to a tutorial) this video will take time to explain how and why to complete each step and will pause periodically to specifically teach new skills. By the end of the series, you will have carved a little person and you will have gained several basic skills that are essential for new woodcarvers. Future projects will continue the process and teach more skills.
Part 3: When you are done with this lesson you will be able to:
1) Round a square piece of wood.
2) Identify which direction to carve with the grain.
Series Description: Welcome to the Complete Beginner Whittling Lessons Series! This series is intended for people who are completely new to whittling and looking for advice on how to get started. It starts with a series of four videos about what equipment and materials are needed for whittling and then there will be a series of projects that will teach the basics of whittling while completing specific projects.
Note that this series focuses on what I would call hobby whittling using dedicated whittling knives and wood that are specifically designed for whittling as a hobby. We will not focus on found wood carving, knives that are not specifically dedicated to whittling, spoon carving, bushcraft or other forms of whittling and woodcarving in this series.

This is such a good series for a beginner like me. Practicing on my own I ran into the pitfalls you mentioned (e.g. cracking & against-the-grain) and now I understand them better.

these go alot faster if you buy dowels from a hardware store and just carve the head. I am thinking of making a few for my granddaughter.

Yeah, the rounding is a good skill to develop, but I imagine they do go a lot faster with a dowel. It's a good suggestion, especially if you want to make a bunch.

I tried doing that and it went much slower for me because the dowels weren't available in basswood. I think I got birch and BOY was that tough.

Use closet rod or look for an old kitchen broom with wooden handle
