Hey Nelson nice to meet you. I'm a long time sub of Eric Rosen and Levy Rozman and they're content just got a little stale for me the past couple months. I'm glad I found your channel because you keep me more engaged. I don't feel too relaxed like I'm with a friend, but I also dont feel the tension of your typical lecturer. I guess you could say I'm vibing ^-^

Absolutely true! Nelson brings interesting chess tips. That gotham clown is just clickbaiting for views. Another youtuber I would recommend is Chesscoach Andras Toth! He's really good.

I love those guys personally but I do agree with the staleness. Nelson kicks ass with instructive value which says a lot considering he's "only" NM.

The "hanging pawns" channel also has a lot of good actual chess stuff as well, especially extensive opening prep - ie not just "here's an opening in 10 minutes and now I'll play a game with subs"

Oh yes, an endgame of Rook against a minor piece (bishop or knight) and no pawns, is a theoretical draw always!

I once saved a game by exchanging all the pawns and going into R vs B ending. Counting on the 50 moves rule as the kings were in the middle of the board.
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 2 жыл бұрын
Suppose chess is played with the rule stalemate = win. As the "wrong corner" drawing trick in the K+R vs K+B endgame relies on stalemate, does this mean the ending would now be a win for the side with the rook? This question can be answered by changing the programming for a tablebase so that stalemate = win, and it turns out the ending is still drawn in the general case. There are more starting positions that win, of course - it can take up to 23 moves to checkmate, stalemate, or capture the bishop. However, in most positions the side with the bishop draws with correct play, which mainly involves keeping their king off the edge of the board and away from the corners.

At 6:35, can't the bishop just go to the f file? I don't see a way to force the bishop off the f,g and h files. The rook can cover 2 files, but not all 3.

I wondered the same thing, so I checked it out using stockfish. You can go Ra3, threatening checkmate. If your opponent moves Kf8, you can move Rf3, forking the bishop. Otherwise, the technique from Nelson's video can be applied.

min 6:33: Rh3 is actually not the correct idea, since Bf4 is still possible, but after Rg1 Bf4 is impossible due to Kf5+, so Bh2 is force and only then Rg2 (controlling h2 and g3 and f4 with the discovery)

I just had this happen and I've never seen it before in playing for almost 5 years. I had the bishop and my opponent kept offering me a draw, but I said if I were him I wouldn't do that. Because I wasn't convinced he could beat me, even though I knew I couldn't win. So after trying for a while he said why don't we flip the board so I had the rook, and I said sure. After about 10 moves I forked his pieces and would have gone onto win. He kept saying mathematically he thought this should be a draw, and he would be right that it should be a draw. Yet neither of us knew that at the time or how to make it happen. Always keep playing, it just might make you better.

Beginner here. So basically if Im black, its impossible to win with a bishop and king- best you can do is a draw against a king and rook?
@wallysullivan9315
@wallysullivan9315 13 күн бұрын
Yeah its impossible to checkmate with just 1 bishop. Even if you win the rook its just a draw. You can do it with 2 bishops, or a bishop alongside any other piece, but not 1 bishop alone. Rook and queen are the only pieces strong enough to force checkmate with just 1 of them by themselves
