Hi Levy, I run the Chess society at my University in England and i just wanted to say how amazing it was this year to see so many new players coming into the society thanks to the queens gambit and then going on to watch your videos. It's really cool that one chess player in the states can have such a big impact on a small society on a different continent! Keep it up man

The Grand Prix Attack is named after a tournament circuit in English chess in the 1980s where players could earn points at various tournaments during the course of the year leading to some decent cash prizes for the best scorers. The GPA was developed as an effective Sicilian-killer requiring minimal preparation and opening memorisation.

You know this stuff works both ways. A moment before watching this I got crushed pretty badly in a closed grand prix attack, and then after he introduced the a6 b5 line, I thought what the hell let's play some blitz and demolished someone a 100 rating points higher than me. This is true educational content, the satisfaction derived from it is immense. Levy is an absolute champ.

I also used to play chess against my dad a lot and that was what originally got me into chess: he was good and I aspired to be better. One of my (and probably his) proudest achievements as a kid was beating him for the first time in an absolutely grueling endgame where I had a rook and two pawns against bishop and knight (out of a semi-failed attacking sacrifice) and eventually queening a pawn and winning his knight, then winning the game.

I’m realizing the point of learning openings isn’t always actually learning the opening, it’s learning the ideas of the opening so you can apply them elsewhere. At least at an intermediate level. Or maybe I’m an idiot, either is possible.
@kirbyknifeman2877
@kirbyknifeman2877 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, this is true. I have one study on sicilian najdorf and there i told that you learn openings because of pattern recognition and ofc the opening theory. That was: e4 c5 Nf3 d6 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 e5 where e5 is a mistake because of Bb5+ and if bishop blocks then take and go f5 to go to e3. If Nd7 then just simple Nf5. And then i also got to use this pattern in another game of philidor defense:- e4 e5 Nf3 d6 d4 exd4 Nxd4 c5 and the same pattern applies here.

@zachr5779 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, like others have said it's pattern recognition. About a week ago in a game, I ended up in a very similar pattern to Legal's Mate but in the Anti-Fried Liver Defense when it originally arises out of the Philidor defense. Took me a couple of minutes to see it, but once you get used to seeing those patterns over and over you notice them in different positions.

13:39 absolutely shocking. I love when Black lets me trade off his light square bishop. As a Grand Prix player, the most appalling games I've played in the opening involve black getting that bishop to the a8-h1 diagonal. Wow I like this opening a lot, as a chronic Vienna player I like to play the “normal” Vienna (not the gambit) like this with the move Qe1 eventually (after I’ve played Na4 and traded off the black bishop) and I have got a lot of wins with an attack very similar to this one but with the Vienna. So seeing as I am already quite used to an attack just like this I will make sure to play this against the Sicilian and I recommend any other Vienna players to do the same. Thank you gotham.

In fact, this is exactly why I tilted 300 rating points - I wanted to practice lines I was training and my opponents weren't playing into them. I lost 300 rating points and now I'm playing against players who make even less sensical moves and I can't beat them consistently enough to move up again. Below 1200, it feels like chess elo is a random walk flipping a coin. I could maintain 1000. Gave up 300 points and can't gain it back. It's not that I'm suddenly a worse player now.

Personally I just do very short sessions of opening studies. When my opponent is the leaving theory before me, I consider it a "win" on opening knowledge and check what I should have done to punish it, if I didn't manage to do that in the game. Whenever I leave theory before my opponent, then I do another short opening study session.
@Damogen

@@ZiRo815 If you are trying to force specific lines, when your opponents doesn't play into them, then you might actually have made yourself a worse player, because you now think more about the position you wanted to get and less about the position you actually have in the game, compared to how you played before. Sounds to me like you need to spend less time on openings and more time on fundamentals. Just for a period, until you (again) can punish strange moves from your opponents.

there is no grand prix against reverse sicilian. On the other hand, if your opponents play whatever you might use some of the tricks from grand prix

It is technically not called the Grand Prix if you play it with black, but you still totally can against the English! You'll just lose that extra tempo obviously.
