Other videos make this seem too simple and therefore frustrating when you struggle. The precision required is brilliantly well explained here. Can’t wait for #3.

Something that helped me a lot and isn't always mentioned, is mast placement on the board. I moved my mast 1/2 an inch back from center position on the track and it made a huge difference in foil control once on foil. My feet suddenly felt equally balanced and I was able to fly much much longer and felt very much in control. Where as before I felt I was rising much too fast and felt it was hard to keep the nose down.

Fantastic explanations of the subtleties of getting up on foil. I realize that actual experience is ultimately the key, but as an experienced windsurfer I totally understand why you are describing what is going on.

Thank you - really helpful video! I've watched several and this is the best I've seen for this step in the learning curve. Details such as how wing position ties to shifting weighting of the feet are extra helpful. Please keep the series going.

Thank you for dedicating an entire video to getting up on the foil. This is where I am struggling right now and the little details you cover for this are very helpful and often overlooked by other videos on foiling. I have been taxiing for some time and now that the winds are returning, I'm anxious to put the foil to use and not get thrown to the water.

Nicely done. And in interest of full disclosure, this is not from someone who has done foiling; sailing, yes. And the US Presidentially appointed Admiral ( mentored by the Father of the Nuclear Navy) who served on three Boards of companies I led since the 90s, had a company I knew well, that created the core technology which ultimately also helped the very first Wing Sail winner of the Americas’ Cup do so, but that’s another story. My nicely done comment comes more from extensive time I’ve also been blessed in teaming closely with top training experts as well as top messaging and also film, TV and documentaries productions experts; repeated regional Emmys Awards winners included; so I picked up at least a few insights - thankfully - over all that extensive teaming quite a number of times, since the early 80s. So again and as this is about you and your artfully crafted, clearly very thoughtful work here; Nicely done!

In addition to the great explanations offered here, what turned out to be key for me (and it retrospect is obvious) is REALLY FLAT WATER. Most (but not all) instructional videos are flat water, and nobody mentions it. In rough water, its difficult to get the board up to speed, and when it does, its often in strong wind and unexpected. In flat water, the board can accelerate under control and you can slow down the transition to being up on foil when there is just slight drag from the bottom of the board. At this point you can adjust your balance, adjust pitch and roll, prepare to sheet out, and make that last upward movement on your own terms when good and ready. Offshore winds where I could touch bottom totally solved my problems.
@CKPerformancetv

Hey David, spot on, the flatter the water the more time you have to concentrate on the job in hand.

Aloha Christian and Karine, thank you for a very informative video. As another below noted, I too am stuck in the cruising off-foil stage (some say "taxiing" I think). I am unsure if it is simply lack of skill, equipment vs environment mismatch or technique. My size: 80 kg. My equipment: board 120L, front foil 2000 cm2, mast position middle of box, wing either 5.3M or 6.0M. Environment: prevailing trade winds of 10-14 knots side-onshore wind. I can sail close hauled either goofy or regular (with regular my dominant surf position) and go out and back with the ability to regain the ground I lost trying to get up on foil. Questions: 1. do I need more wing? (more wind is not really an option...it seems that I have to work on the few days when winds are stronger...but there are plenty of others winging in the same conditions) 2. is the point of sail that you note for acceleration comparable to a broad reach (~135º off wind) or a beam reach (~90º off wind)? What is the best mast position for this process of foiling without pumping? Thank you for any input you might have.
@tonic-mag
@tonic-mag 2 жыл бұрын
Hi There, check our video on mast position, you shouldn't really need to move it for conditions, more set it for a balance point on the board. If more wind isn't an option, then it is going to be tricky, a 6m should be enough to get you up, especially with that foil size and larger board. The tricky bit is getting the board up on the foil, once it's up then the lift of the foil will kick in and you'll need less power. I don't think a 7m will make it any easier, it will just be bigger and harder to handle and pump. The best thing you can do is forget 10knots, that is too light to learn, or be prepared to practice your on water technique when it is light. When you do have stronger winds, even towards 14 knots that's the time to really try and get up. Watch for gusts on the water, learn to feel them and use them to your advantage. With such a low wind available you are really going to have to master pumping, it's a whole boaddy approach with the legs and arms combining, pull power in with your arms as you push with your legs to put that ;ower to the foil. Try pushing forwards with the legs too to generate forward momentum. If you had 16-18knots to play with it sounds like you would be up and flying with ease, when learning more wind is the key, then as you master it you can go in lighter and lighter winds...
@CKPerformancetv

Hey, apologies for the slow reply. Yes accelerating onto a broad reach is key. You'll get maximum speed, water flow and lift...

I’ve been trying so hard not to get blown downwind, I’m rarely getting on foil, and when I do I think it’s when I inadvertently turn downwind. (My inland lakes are not suited for walking back) Super excited to turn downwind and loose some ground now, this will help me no doubt!

Thank you for this excellent video . I can get up on Foil already but to be balance and stay on foil is the problem. Do you have some advice . How ist the weight distribution on both feet. How ist the of Position of the Wing. What I have to do Wehen Theo Board Start to stall. Could you make some new Video? N.Ebert

We'll be making more vids for sure, speed is your friend here, once you get up the faster you go the more stable the foil becomes. Once up try pumping the wing and few times and pushing energy through your legs to gain speed. Once you have that momentum it will all start to feel more locked in... Feet you should have evenly distributed...

Piece of cake, no worries: #1: Learn to surf. #2: Learn to sail. #3: Learn how to fly above the water on a foil. #4: Mind the wind direction, look out for sharks, stay out of the way of boats, climb onto the board with the wind at your back, while simultaneously holding the wing in one hand to assist, precisely position your front foot, stand up, get balanced, cross your hands to position the sail to catch the wind just right, and off you go (for a few meters before falling off)! Repeat this step, until completely knackered. GOT IT! Only wish I wasn't a 70 year old fart. 😜
