Hey guys, I've been following your instructional videos for a long time now and they have been more than helpful through every step of the learning curve. I love the new on board sessions but there is one point you are missing, it seems like it is super easy and stable to just get up on a board, stand up and get up on foil. I promise you anyone who stats this sport is bound to fall off the board in every step of the way. It would be nice to see more fails and how to avoid them during the leaning session. One specific level I remember as super frustrating is overfoiling on the first times when getting on foil. There are not enough videos on this subject and I imagine it can help a lot of new comers

Thanks, exactly what I needed, got up on foil almost immediately today on my second day and then could not get on foil after that for the next 90 minutes, getting out exhausted and frustrated in 10 knot winds. I had not been steering with my back foot thinking the wing position did all the steering (despite knowing this from surfing and kite boarding 😣) . Moving hips forward and backwards was another great tip for board trimming. Thanks again!

Wow this on board format is awesome, thanks for taking the lessons to the next level. Super good to be able to see it in real time on board. I'm a total beginner, only had one session on a board so far (but heading out later today). One thing i noticed yesterday learning to use the wing and stay upwind was that the position of the wing, how far back or close to the nose of the board made a lot of difference to me controlling the direction i was going. If thats a thing it would be great to see some intel about that in the vids. Thanks so much for your brilliant series - love the good vibes and the awesome instruction. Peace out from New Zealand ;)

This new format totally rocks! The hip-movement back and forth is an excellent suggestion. I get up on foil and while I try to focus on going upwind but not too far into the wind, my board is going camel-back up and down - touching the water, up to almost breaching, down again and up again. Its a challenge to get enough speed and stability in that process. But I'm just adding patience, since it is so much fun. I know that I just need to hone muscle memory on this one - it's the only way. Thank you guys again for these excellent instructions. they have been valuable for me. But the most valuable help I've gotten is from other surfers on the beach who had been watching my movements and come up to me afterwards saying " I think you are not heading into the wind enough" or "maybe bend you knees a little more" or something. This is on-beach-helpfullness - superimportant for making a great sport

This new on-the-board live commentary is really helpful. I've been struggling to get on foil in light wind, but this video gave me several things to try or do differently (Gwen--letting the board turn down wind, Kelly--shifting weight with hip movements, Damo--pulling in hard with the back hand on the pump). Thanks for what you're doing--I got started in this sport because of this channel. If you ever come to Central Texas, we've got some Jan-May winds on our lakes.

Thanks so much for more great instruction. One thing that could be useful in future is a video on common mistakes you see that stop people getting up ( and staying up) on foil. For example for a while I feel I was kinda locked into my weight being too far back preventing the board from picking up enough speed to take off. Thanks again for all the inspiration, from a cold damp UK.

Steve, you could have had the foil mounted too far back. Which can make this happen.... Making all the wight go back to get it to fly.

A very very very good explanation of getting up on foil. Thank you. As of today I’m starting to develop semi yet uncontrolled speed on my long 8’8” downwinder. From not being able to stand for five plus sessions (days) to advancing to standing for a whole 3 seconds, then 10 seconds, then traveling 10 feet, 25 feet, 40 feet, all in days, not hours, now a 200’ semi controlled slog and a little bouncing on the board, ok speed, it’s been a long 15+ day voyage over 3 months (had to quit and get more foam in the game). At 73 next month, I know foiling is getting closer and closer before my 12/21 birthday!!!

I found that VERY FLAT WATER critical for first successes up on foil, because it allows one to slow down the transition to get up on foil, reset your balance and keep board flat as the board accelerates and the surface resistance disappears. Difficult to do in chop. You guys know exactly what to do when the board pops up, I needed it to occur in slower motion. Flat water and strong wind sometimes not easy to find, I fortunately found a local beach with straight offshore wind but perfect shallow depth along my course. I had developed good upwind skills by then, and never a long swim back to shallow water there. Hopefully these flat water reflexes will translate to bumpier waters, then can add pumping for light winds.

Thank you very much Dam and Gwen. The one thing I have a lot of problems with is sheeting and ending up too upwind which prevents me to get the speed needed to lift. Can you spend couple of tips on it? When you sheet in, what’s the hip / foot placement you recommend in order to gain speed and get the needed speed to lift? Thanks a lot

Thanks for this video. I am up on foil, FINALLY got up and stable on my weak side as well as my strong side but really can only just go straight and usually wind up down wind and doing the walk of shame. Question now is, once up on foil, you say head into the wind. How? In windsurfing you tilt the sail to the tail of the board, lean to your heel side and look hard over your upwind shoulder. Doing this wing foiling has caused me to round up and fall. Can you go through the steps to actually sail upwind, ie where is the wing in relation to the board, body position on the board, heel/toe pressure, etc. Thanks!!

Excellent video guys - thank you! Quick question - does it make a difference how one's leading hand (top of strut) grip is oriented? I.e. fingers facing up towards you like a bicep curl position, or fingers pointing down? In the video, I see the leading hand grip you guys have is not a bicep-curl position. I assume it can have an impact on the wing orientation.

Thanks so much for your hard work! Question about going upwind… if you are overpowered, the wing is to big for conditions, is it harder to go upwind? I got blown away on a new wing but conditions were super harsh. I’ve been holding ground, but couldn’t that day. Thanks!
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
Brian, Yes if you are crazy overpowered it can be hard to stay up wind 100%. Also take into consideration sometimes the windier it is the ocean or water will generate some current also making it harder to go up wind.

Wow that's a 50 min video! ahhhhhh. Well honestly keeping it simple an Efoil will teach you how to foil 100% and get you feeling comfortable on foil. The wing its a whole new learning curve all in itself. Then you put them together. The only Efoil's I would purchase are LIFT or Flite hands down. Would not look at anything else. My thoughts.... 100% the drag from the board or stick to the water is released and yes everything gets faster. Just know its coming and depower your wing or edge into the wind to cut down on the power with letting out on your back hand to take away power. Hope that helps.
