In this video, I explain why it is necessary to use a relay in a circuit. I then demonstrate how to wire a 5 pin relay with a negative trigger wire. The benefits of using a negative trigger wire on a 5 pin relay would be - one less power wire going to the relay, and not needing a power wire feeding your switch. This may be beneficial depending on what type of accessories you are wiring into your car or truck. You could use this method for a radiator fan, fuel pump, headlights fog lights, spot lights, LED lights and probably hundreds of other uses.
How to wire a relay with a negative switch
00:00 Why use a relay instead of a switch?
1:00 Pin 30 + Pin 86 - Connect them both together to a fused 12V power source.
1:31 Pin 87 - Sends power out to your accessory.
1:59 Pin 85 - Connect to the switch, with the other side of the switch going to ground.
Pin 30 - Incoming 12v to the relay from the battery (fused)
Pin 86 - incoming 12v to the relay from the battery (fused) - Tied in with Pin 30
Pin 87 - Outgoing power from the relay to the electric accessory (lights, pump, fans, etc)
Pin 85 - Negative trigger wire to turn on the relay. Should be connected to a switch. The other side of the switch should connect to a ground.
Pin 87a - Empty

Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful! It also reminds me of a story... I created a remote controlled house light switch for a science fair when I was a kid in the early 1990’s. I used RC car parts that could attach to any light switch. I lost the science fair to a classmate with model rocket engines strapped to a pair of skis. I’m still sour about it. I should have patented my light switch idea, but everyone thought it was stupid and I was only like 10 years old. “Why would anybody want to remotely control a light?!” Lol.... #hugeregrets

I like the idea of negative triggering because, as i understand it, it means there is only power going through the switch when it is on. That said, i am having a hard time figuring out how you would wire the switches themselves. Any help you could provide would be greatly welcomed. Thanks again for the great content.

Hello sir, thanks a lot for this! Question; I'm changing the heater in my 1971 Triumph to an all electric one. Originally it had a switched ground, but no relais or fuse. I want to incorporate them to be safe, but use the standard power wire from the old heater. This is a switched 12v, would that be OK? I do not need to use the heater without the car running anyway as it will just drain the battery

exactly. The switch only has to energize a small coil inside the relay (usually a few milliamps). Once the contacts of the relay are made it can pass whatever current the relay is rated for (usually 15 amps for the one in the video). I have seen a micro switch activate a 100 horsepower electric motor by using a relay and a contactor.

I love your videos and have enjoyed being a subscriber to your channel. I have also watched your fan wiring video and I have a question for you. I have a ground activated radiator fan through a relay. No thermostat, just a switch. My toggle switch has three terminals and it has a warning light in the toggle that I want to use. I think I have the fan wired properly and everything seems to work as it should. I have my 85 ground wire going to the center terminal on the three terminal switch and I have a ground wire on one of the side terminals. Unfortunately, when I switch the toggle and turn on the fan, the warning light on the toggle does not light and I cannot figure out how to get it to do so. I noticed in this video it appears that you are also using a switch that lights when the unit is switched on, but unless I am mistaken, your switch light is also not working when the fan is on. Can you tell me how we can solve this problem? Thanks so much! Lin

@WiringRescue

They are both perfectly safe if wired right with appropriate fuses and wire sizes. They each have benefits. It really depends what you’re doing with them. Some people like negative triggers because it allows them to only run a negative wire into the car and ground it right to a dash. Others want a positive trigger because it’s necessary for controlling that type of circuit they have. Like everything in life “it depends”.

So if you have a negative triggered switch and you don't have your switch run to a body ground if you hook up the negative wire will that trigger the fan accessory to come on? I have mine wired so it had a 3 pin switch with a negative pin that I have grounded to the battery and one power wire run to the battery and the other leg going to my accessory my negative wire when I touch it to the battery triggers the relay to open and I connect the ground wire to the other fan it turns the fan on even tho the switch is off any idea what I should check?

Whats the difference between negative and positive rrigger relay... which do you prefer always
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 жыл бұрын
It really depends what the relay is being used for. I’ll give you two examples: 1. Let’s say you want some new fog lights to always come on with your headlights. You would use a power wire from your headlights to trigger the fog light relay (“positive trigger” on pin 86), which would flick your fog lights on whenever the headlights are powered up. 2. Now let’s instead pretend you want a toggle switch inside the cab of your truck to turn the new fog lights on. Using a negative trigger relay, you could keep all the power wires and relay under your hood. Then simply run one negative trigger wire (“negative trigger” from pin 86) inside the cab of your truck, to a switch. The other side of the switch could ground to any metal under your dashboard. By doing this, you won’t need to splice into any wires inside your truck, and there is no risk of the trigger wire rubbing on anything and popping a fuse, because the trigger is on the ground circuit. So in short “it depends”. :) hope that helped a bit.

I was wondering culd relays be activated via pick up coil? I have loot different relays so Im surching to eliminate ignition trigger from me pick up coil. I noticed 4 diferent relays. 2pin warning light buzzer relay. 3 pin blinker relay 4pin rear windscrean heater relay 6 pin windscrean viper motor relay . So can I use any of those relays and make them programabel variabel for ignition coils?? At some acesions me car refused to stop when all 4 blinker worked engin worked in union with blinker relay,the second thing hapened me car self excelerated from idel to mac rpm be him self if I turned head lights ON. So I wonderd what the hell was all that about? I do have how ever linear voltage regulator inside me dashboard. Later I found the problem corroded wire was on back side lights didnt get ground andto me ignition key 1 black wire smoked hade bade conection. So any one know why that acured and how actualy control those relays manualy for engine speed? Its similar to buzz coil just in me case its fiering true the ground some how. Any usefull advice wuld be great. I wuld like to have that set up buzz coil with out ignition module for stationary engines generators who spin al very low rpm .

It sounds like you have a negative on Pin 85 and 86, which will make the relay not work. If you copy the directions in the video, you should have no trouble. I also have another method here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOwo2WQnNtkec0

I set up a negative triggered relay on my switch, but my issue is that the on position of the switch is an open circuit and the off position of the switch is a closed circuit. Therefore I am using 87a to power the lights. When the switch is off ( closed circuit) the relay is using power and will draw the battery down. Is there a way to hook this setup without the draw?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
The easiest solution would be to use a different switch. However, I’m guessing that you like the switch you have. So - maybe use two relays: 1: set relay #1 up exactly how you have it right now. 2: set up a second relay that turns on with the ignition switch, and powers up pin 30 on relay #1. It’s not great, but it would probably work.

When I'm installing a new component (light bar) on my truck I have the option of Positive or Negative trigger. What is the deciding factor on which option to choose?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
Either will work if wired correctly. It mostly depends where you will be mounting the relay. Sometimes people don’t want to have a positive trigger wire running into their vehicle, because it could rub on something and short out. A negative wire will just turn your light on if the wire shorts out. Negative triggers also generally have less wiring because one side of the switch goes right to ground, which could be right next to the switch. Positive trigger needs a full power wire on each side of the switch.

@WiringRescue

Depends what your goal is, because when the relay turns on, 87a goes dead. So 87 or 87A gets power depending on whether the relay is on or off. But they never have power at the same time.

@WiringRescue

No. Pin 85 is a ground. So the wire come from pin 85 at the relay, to a switch. The other side of the switch goes to a ground. All the switch is doing is making and breaking the ground contact for the relay.

Ok..I've got a 1992 Harley Davidson sportster..I've taken off the stock front forks and installed a 6 inch longer springer front end ..now for my situation..I'm using a rectangle car headlight ..didn't think of it initially but the headlight is drawing too much amps for this system..how would I wire in a duel headlight relay system..small rocker switches on system..don't want to melt harness,alternator/charging system..
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Here is how I would do it: - buy a 4 or 5 pin relay (doesn’t matter which) - connect the factory Harley 12v+ headlight wire to pin 86 on the relay. - connect pin 85 to a ground - connect pin 30 to the battery with a fuse in between (fuse size would be based on how many amps the headlight draws) - connect pin 87 as the power feed to your new headlight. Then when you turn on your headlights, your factory Harley wiring will tell your relay to turn on, which will pop on your fancy new light! Good luck! Hope it works out!

If your light bar is draining your battery, it is definitely not wired right or not working right. I'd following this design in the video and see if it solves the problem.
@76ShadowGhost
@76ShadowGhost 2 жыл бұрын
If your light bar is running through a switch it most definitely could be because of the switch. Putting a relay in between would separate the source voltage to the light bar. If it still drains the battery it could be because a positive wire from the light bar is chaffed and creating a minor short to ground.

@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue Жыл бұрын
Every circuit in a car should have a fuse protecting it someplace in my opinion. The large wire to the starter would be the only exception. If you are burning switches, you have more amperage flowing through the switch than your switch is rated for. So I would guess that whatever you are powering is being powered through the switch and not the relay. Could be a simple mix up with the wires. Double check that your switch is going to the proper pin on the relay. If you have the same relays as me, your switch should connect to either pin 85 or pin 86, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
