In this video, I explain how to fix your LED turn signal bulbs that don't flash when installed into a car, truck, or motorcycle. In short, it is because LED lights do not draw enough electricity (amperage) through the older style turn signal flashers to make them flash properly. The fix for this problem is to replace the older style turn signal flasher with a more modern LED turn signal flasher. LED flashers have tiny circuit boards inside them, and do not require the same amount of electricity flowing through them for them to blink. That is not the only potential problem that you may have though. The new LED flasher also needs to be wired properly. If not, the lights will stay on and will not blink.
Below is a list of the relays, the LED and non-LED turn signal flashers, fuses, the incandescent and LED 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and the 3 way toggle switch I used to make the entire circuit in the video work properly.
Items used in this video:

I mistakenly purchased a 5 pin flasher relay instead of the 5 pin Bosch for some LED pod lights for my quad distance to the parts store and general laziness have me wondering if I can run them with the wires reversed so as to prevent the pulse for the flash or will this LED flash relay overheat?

@@chukkpurdy5151Are you referring to this video? The LED bulbs were on the left side and the incandescent bulbs were on the right side of the screen throughout the entire video, so I don't understand your question. The reason why the LED bulbs don't blink when connected to the old style flasher is because the old style flasher needs more current than the LEDs can draw, to heat the bi-metallic strip inside of the old flasher. The heating and cooling of the bi-metallic strip is what causes the contacts inside the old flasher to open and close. The opening and closing of the contacts is what makes the lights blink.

Bimetallic switch. I literally just posted a schematic of that part on another video. Far as the led pulse goes it just a bistable 555 timer ic. Square wave generator. Reversing those wires could destroy cheap led flashing circuits that do not have reverse voltage protection. To be honest they should include a full bridge rectifier circuit with that flasher so as to allow it to work correctly even if you reverse the wire connections.

Very very interesting and informative. My problem is on a Harley Road King . Switched the OEM front Amber Signal / running Lights for a LED Arlen Ness light bar . The Tech. said that they were suppose to be Dim when Blinking . They are maybe 20 % brighter when they Signal , maybe less. No Hyper Flash , just weak weak signaling . Do you think a Flasher would fix that ? I;ve been thinking I needed an Equalizer or Resistor and have to splice into the wires.

Hi @Rattymusclecar, Thank you for that informative video! I've seen 3 videos of yours today and learnt 3 new things! All relevant to my current builds. I have a somewhat off beat question about Hazard lights though. Perhaps you can help? For reference, I live in Australia, and, whilst we have GM products here (Holden) there are of course differences between GM & GMH. I have recently purchased a 73 C10 Stepside. It's two trucks put together, the donor being a mid 80s truck/Blazer. In my efforts to make it roadworthy, I noticed there are two spaces for flasher cans in my wiring, one for directional and one for hazards, no problem there, replace missing one and truck is one step closer to roadworthy! I've had a fair few GM products before (AUS only) but have never seen two flasher cans. Is this a North American regulation or something? I've already subscribed! Sweet Le Mans too
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing! I don’t have a definite answer to your question, but I do have a guess that is probably wrong. With the car off, you want your turn signal switch and all of its functional magic to be dead. Otherwise you’d always find them blinking in grocery story parking lots without anybody in the car. However, you want your hazard switch available all the time if you car is off and your keys were stolen by a group of zombies. For some reason, GM decided that wiring it this way was smarter. In my hazard switch video, you’ll notice that my turn signals would work 24/7 and so would the hazard switch. It doesn’t matter if the car is on or off. In the interest of keeping life simple, I designed it that way. Maybe I’ll do the more complex version too… hmmm Good luck with you truck project, and thanks for the question!

Is your LED flasher wired backwards? They generally only work one way. If you wire them backward, you get lights that turn on but dont flash.

Is it possible to add the flasher before the switch instead of the relay
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe you could make the circuit work that way, because the switch is just turning the relay on and off. It’s totally separate from the flashers.

I'd like to add 1 thing.. for motorcycles that are still having issues after swapping in an LED flasher, check if you have an incandescent indicator bulb on the gauge. This will most likely solve the issue. Either just remove the bulb or replace it with an LED.

Hey I have a 1964 Imperial with power windows, but I'd like to add relays to them. Can you show how to do it? 😀
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
As you may expect, I'm not super familiar with 64 Imperial window wiring. However, I'm good at guessing! You'll have to do some exploring of wiring to harness to figure out which wires do which. Here are my thoughts: - You'll need 1 relay per window, so 4 total most likely. - The window switch probably (?) sends power to the window motor (as opposed to ground). This means that you'll be connecting that power wire from each switch to pin 86 on the relays. - Pin 85 on the relays are grounds. - Pin 30 on the relays should be the power coming in from a fuse box. If I were you, I'd buy one of these. vincentperformance.com/shop/leash-bdfb/ to grab all of your power from. Feed that fuse box power from the battery (with a fuse in that main wire), and then each of the fuses in this panel can power a relay/window. - Pin 87 on each relay will feed the power to each window motor. - Use all new wiring to be safe. Hope that helps you out! -Jeremy

On my 2002 Silverado I'm installing all LED bulbs in the truck. I upgraded the stock flasher relay module under the dash with a new one to keep the LED's from hyper flashing. So today on the driver left side I put in the new turn signal LED bulbs with resistors for the higher lumen 3157 flashing rear bulb, and one 3157 bulb for the front. As well one front side mini flashing LED bulb that is lower lumens without a resistor. This was on the left/driver side of my truck. When I tested the left side, the turn signal in the back and both front signals were flashing. Then the mini flashing LED bulb stopped working. So I swapped it with a different mini LED bulb, and nothing, no flashing. I even tried a resistor on it, and nothing So I took the resistor and mini LED out of the left light socket and put back in the stock incandescent bulb, and it still wouldn't work. Now what is happening is the front 3157 & back 3157 largef turn signal bulbs that should flash. They just stay illuminated even though the left turn signal is not turned on. What could this be, because at first the front mini LED flashing turn signal along with the two 3157 bulbs front and back were all flashing fine. With that said before I installed all the bulbs, I did clean all the light bulb sockets with fast drying electrical spray/protectant. Though non of the other LED light bulbs had a problem. I thought about buying and splicing new mini light bulb sockets on the front. Then it got dark so I couldn't do anything else. And I don't believe it's a blown fuse or the front and back turn indicators wouldn't just stay illuminated. I'm totally stumped on what to do, could you please help me, thank you. ~Carl

It’s tough to diagnose electrical issues from afar. If this was my truck, I’d start by putting the stock bulbs all back into place along with the factory flasher relay. Then I would make 1 change at a time and test the functionality after each change. It’s also worth noting that some of the LED bulbs and LED flasher relays are not the highest quality in the world. So it is certainly possible that you may simply have a bad part. Good luck in the diagnosis! Electric stuff is rarely fun to diagnose, but always leaves me with a great sense of accomplishment.

@@WiringRescue , Thank You! Tomorrow, what I think I might try is adding all my new LED bulbs on the right side of my truck to see if they all work. Hopefully if I don't have any issues with the right side front turn indicators then it shouldn't be the new flasher relay module, correct? If not then maybe I got some bad switchback LED bulbs. And or my old stock T10 light socket is bad, it was slightly corroded. I will also check with stock bulbs. In your experience is a resistor needed for a low watt switchback/flashing T10 LED? I really appreciate your advice, was very nice of you to reply quickly.
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
I am not an expert at swapping to the new t10 LED bulbs, but I don’t know why you would even need a resistor if you have the proper LED flasher in place. Seems like it would be unnecessary to me, though I’ve never done it.
@04DynaGlyde
@04DynaGlyde 2 жыл бұрын
@@WiringRescue , Just like in your video when you turned the flasher the wrong direction. Well you have to pay careful attention to which direction you put the upgraded LED Bulbs and relays in the turn light indicator sockets. 1. They won't work right. 2. The relays will get extremely HOT! I fixed it, but boy was it time consuming!!!
