Great video, it helps a lot especially when I’m adding in a spur into my shed. Just a quick question if I may! Can I add on a spur to an already existing spur?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE3 жыл бұрын
No, only one socket per spur or you can overload the cable. You could spur to a fused switch or fused connection unit, and if you use a 13amp fuse (assuming it's 2.5mm cable) then you can have several sockets off that spur as they will be protected by the fuse. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Very helpful video. Have had circuits tested and and all is good. Just a few places I can't physically get to visually ensure that things will remain safe over time. Old building creaky floor boards and general moving and shaking from the rocking and rolling that occurs in my studio. Would plugging high amp appliances into RCD adapters increase the overall safety? I know they are acting on front end of socket so wouldn't necessarily help with an over loaded cable deep in an old wall but as often music sessions go on for longer than realised there is many times that high amp appliances are in use for many Hours simultaneously. Could plug in RCD's be an extra layer of protection if I were to correctly add in more sockets to ring main. As opposed to extension leads plugged into extension leads is not ideal but at least a problem would most likely be easily noticed or would trip an extension with built in RCD. Excuse the poor question more of practical person. Writing doesn't come easily. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE3 жыл бұрын
Whilst additional RCD protection is good, it seems your risk is overloading the cable? Or maybe it's not actually a risk, depends on what you are using. What you could do is a fused spur. This is a bit like in the video but the cable is spured to a 13amp fused switch which protects all the sockets beyond the switch with the 13amp fuse. Then you can add several sockets to the spur. If they become overloaded then the fuse will blow keeping it safe. If you want RCD protection and don't have it already but have a fairly modern consumer unit then you can get an RCBO which will replace the current MCB (trip) in your consumer unit. This can protect the circuit that serves your studio. Sounds like maybe it's worth getting an electrician to take a look for you. Best to stay safe. Best of luck with it and thanks or watching.

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE4 жыл бұрын
In theory yes. You could also replace the single socket for a double if you want. Just make sure your existing electrics are in good working order as adding sockets to an already overloaded circuit could be dangerous. If in any doubt, call an electrician. Best of luck.

Great video, thanks, I'm gonna be watching a lot more of your vids. One thing I'm not sure about, maybe someone can help. Here you talk about only having one spur as not to overload the circuit. But what happens if you then stick a 4 socket extender cable into the spur socket. Would this overload it in exactly the same way? I'm sure I've done this at some point...
@adysupreme3 жыл бұрын
A typical extension with say 4-8 sockets has it's own 13A fuse, so it would not exceed that of the spurred socket.
@olliec13193 жыл бұрын
@@adysupreme Thanks Adrian, really useful to know, I appreciate it.
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE3 жыл бұрын
Think you had your question answered. The 13amp fuse protects anything beyond it. You can also do a fused spur using a fused connection unit. If you spur to one of those then you can have as many sockets as you want as the fuse will blow if overloaded protecting the cable and sockets beyond this point. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

As long as your ring circuit is actually a ring then it doesn't matter the physical direction of the cables but every socket needs a feed in and a feed out to make it a ring. Than just spur as shown in the video. If you already have sockets in place why do you want to spur to them? Surely this will be on the ring already? Hope that makes sense.

Yes if you are just extending them to be part of the ring that is fine. Just add the likely loads from these sockets to your diversity calculations

Thanks
@user-go7mc4ez1d3 жыл бұрын
Only if that first double socket is isolated from the rest of the ring final by a fused socket
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE3 жыл бұрын
You need to know what that socket is first, is it already a spur? If it is a spur then the only way is to add a fused spur before that socket then have two sockets after the fuse. Problem is without knowing the existing socket may already be a third spur so any work in addition could be dangerous. Hope that helps.

Great video POUSE around the HOUSE. Made me more confident about what I'm doing in my integral garage. I currently have a single socket in there which is a spur from a socket on the house landing but I need more sockets in the garage at more convenient locations around the walls at bench height. So, I'm replacing the single socket in the garage with a 13a FCU, then running 4 double sockets in series from it. I'm using 2.5mm T&E and enclosing the T&E in 25mm x 16mm mini trunking, running the cables in the trunking along the top of the wall close to the ceiling and dropping to meet sockets at bench height at 4 locations. Does that sound ok? Are there reg's about running trunking vertically and/or horizontally?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE5 жыл бұрын
Sounds alright but couldn't be sure without seeing it. As for trunking, keep it horizontal and vertical as you said. As long as its protected from physical harm (which it will be in trunking) should be good. Thanks for watching.

The only real way is by testing the electrics or if you're certain of the wiring like me I rewired my house so I know where it all is. If you're able to lift floor boards then you will be able to see the cables but you have to be careful you don't spur off a spur as in old houses previous owners have likely added all sorts of wonderful things! I recently moved into a house and found that the multimedia panel with 2 double sockets appears to be spurred via junction box from the 32A kitchen socket ring final main (I assume ring not radial as it's for the kitchen sockets). As it is essentially 4 sockets on a spur (single cable) with no apparent fuse, this doesn't seem to follow the principles you've layed out. It's unlikely to carry any significant load as it's just intended for TV but this doesn't seem very good, or am I missing something?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE3 жыл бұрын
If that is the case it doesn't meet current regs but over the years home owners add things they shouldn't as a quick solution. If you are concerned then you can find the junction with the ring, disconnect it and put a fused connection unit (with or without a switch) next to that socket, and spur through the fused connection unit connecting the wires in that. If it's barely used and your happy with it then you could leave it. The problem is if you ever sold the house and someone started putting high load appliance into those sockets. Hope that helps.

@dazeng46335 жыл бұрын
What else is on the ring? You should just be able to break into the ring and extend it depending on what else is on it. A normal ring will deal with the computer load no problems.
