How to wire an LED toggle switch , ( on-off 3 prong rocker switch ) 2020

How to wire an LED toggle switch, "ON /OFF " switch basic. Applies to spot switches, non led switches, basic 3 wire switches (3 prong) . Generally used in 12volt installs for on off switches. It doesn't matter if its going into a Lamborghini , Ferrari or Bentley. Maybe even a Honda. Its all the same electrical.

Its more typical for the 3rd prong to be (-) , but each company does their own thing. If it is infact (+) and your passing (-) through in the toggle side. Then yes, you’ll have to source power from somewhere. However, that all sounds very backward. The internal led will req both (+) and (-) . So. Its more likely that your passing (+) through the toggle side, and needing (-) to finish the supply for the led. Verify the voltage of the toggle side, and then confirm the switches labeling to be safe.

Thank you so much!! Hundreds of millions of videos on KZbin and no one's bothered to explain how to find out how a switch is wired internally. Not all switches are created equal and I got one with 3 prongs, absolutely no markings (all solid silver colour as well) and no idea which prong is which? I have a multimeter but never really used it, but now I can figure out how my switch works and can finally install some work lights on my SUV to help with reversing on dark forest paths and loading trailers. Thank you again for putting it into layman's terms and not assuming that everyone has a switch with clear markings or just naturally know how they function. 🙏

Thank you! Replacing toggle on rv portable macerator pump. Original ran over by friend. Second one melted due to 10 gauge wire being spliced with 12 gauge wire....whoops! Honestly didn't think batteries could cause a motor to put out so much heat. I liked the ease of the led lighted switch and seen that it was available in 12v 30A, as I needed. Got home and looked at it and was stumped. Found your video in a search. I appreciate the diagram and how well you explained. Thank you! My mother is very grateful to you for saving her from having to go out into the night to our house. It reminds her too much of the scary outhouse runs as a child. So glad we never had to experience that. As it was, my feet barely touched the ground when I turned my bedroom light off. I should have been in the long jump of the Olympics.

It definitely answered a few questions I have for my current project which is to add two 7" LED light bars to my boat trailer which I'll be able to turn on/off from within my vehicle. Each LED bar is rated at 60 watts, 12v-24v so using a 12v car battery, I calculated each light bar will use 5 amps (60 watts / 12v). I hope this correct. Anyway, I'm planning to run a wire from the positive terminal on my car battery to the "input" on the 3 prong toggle switch, a wire from the negative battery terminal to the "ground" on the switch then a wire from the "load" prong on the switch to a fuse holder then from the fuse holder to the positive on one light bar. I'm going to run the 2 light bars in series so the negative from the first light bar to the positive of the second light bar. Finally, the negative on the 2nd light bar to the negative battery terminal. I do have a couple of questions: 1) does this wiring plan sound correct? 2) what size fuse should I use (5 amp or 10 amp) and 3) what gauge wire should I use? From my car battery to the back of my vehicle is about 16 ft, then from the back of my vehicle to the back of my boat trailer where the light bars will be mounted is roughly another 17 feet.

The wiring plan sounds solid. If you are infact able to run it in series. Then 5amp should do. But if parallel is required q0 amp for sure. These are minimum though, because mote amperage will be required to compensate for wire length and connetion resistance. If it was my design, id go parallel, id use at least a 14awg wire and fuse each output with a 10amp per light. (Havi g them seperated this way, will make led failures easy to trouble shoot and wont take down the whole circuit. Also make sure to fuse the wore from the batt as well matching the total amperage and wire rating. This fuse should be as close to the batt as possible.

Great video! You did a great job explaining the three prong.. I’m planning on building a DIY solar power box like a goal zero to power my truck bed fridge and charge phones and other electronic accessories. I want to use switches to power my 12v outlets, but the switches I want to use (round) have an LED.. though LED’s use minimal voltage/current it’s still power scavenger over a period of time. My question is, if I utilize a 3prong switch but leave off the negative connection to keep the LED from illuminating, will the switch still function properly for my source to load circuit.

Yeah the mechanical portion of the switch will still function properly without the LED portion.

Really insightful video - thanks. But what about if I have to wire an AC 230V rangehood fan and I have 15A 240V three pin LED switch very similar as yours on the video ? In DC circuit current always goes in one direction only, however in AC it alternates 50x per second. How am I to connect it then? Which one is a ground and which is live?

Ok. So your ABSOLUTELY correct. In an AC application, you most likely CANNOT use a switch like mine. As the switches we used in the video are not only DC switches, but they are also limited to around a 15amp draw. 15amp in dc is VERY diff then 15amp AC. For your hood range, youll be needing a typical light switch, like for you bathroom light. Not a toggle or rocker switch like in my video. And the wiring, may be similar, but be sure to investigate deep. AC power is nothing to play with.

K so I'm hooking up LEDs to the bottom of my wheel wells on my Jeep Wrangler so it is a direct circuit right now so in order for me to hook it up it has to stay on I tried hooking up the toggle switch and just like you said not to do I hooked up the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative and then I tried hooking up a negative to the accessory part which is the light on the toggle switch and it would not shut off and then the power wire the positive wire was getting super hot quick

I was wiring up two 4” LED lights to my atv. I know of ground as green which grounds to the frame. You clarified that ground on 12v is the black wire to the battery. Hense positive and negative... lol. Within the first 30 seconds to a minute into your video I knew what happened

Quickly disconnected from the battery and got the wires loose. Helpful video, but how do you wire up a 3 prong switch (like the one with the small LED in the video) on the negative leg of the circuit. I am powering a radiator fan using a relay triggered by the ground wire on the temperature switch in the radiator and would like to use a switch to turn the fan on manually using the same negative ground trigger. In testing, I can get the fan to turn on and off with the negative wire connected through the switch, but the LED blinks momentarily and does not stay on while the fan is operating. Any idea how to get the LED to stay on while the fan is operating with the switch providing continuity to the ground side of the circuit?

I’m a little confused so if I’m wiring led strip lights my neg wire goes to ground prong and then i wire another neg to the battery from the same prong so I’m essentially just splitting the wire? I understand the positive side.

So you have 2 options. 1: led (-) straight to ground. And (+) from batt to 1 side of switch , then other side of switch to (+) of LED lights. 2: led (+) straight to batt (put a fuse in that).....then (-) of led to 1 side of switch and the other side of switch straight to ground. Yes, the switch is only there to seperate 1 wire. Thatll turn on and off your led light.

Could I do this on a passive circuit? I wired up some acoustic guitar pickups to a toggle switch, now I want to use an led switch instead, can I just use a 9 volt to power one passively using this same method?
