Thank you for a great video tutorial. I had a thermocouple break down the other day that was wired up to a PID temperature controller and the temperature control did not shut off the heating element. Why was that? Isn't supposed to turn off the heating element right away when a thermocouple breaks down and can no longer send signal to the PID?
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 17 күн бұрын
I honestly don't know. I would assume that if a thermocouple can fail in such a way that the controller thinks it need to apply more heat is what may have happened? I would contact the manufacturer of the controller and get their feedback on why that happened.

Great video! Taught me a lot. I'm currently building a powder coating oven. This will require multiple heating elements, which would require multiple pin relays I'm guessing? Any advice on what I'd be looking for? And don't worry, I have an electrician friend, but he talks in code I think and, not really available all the time. I kind of want to understand as much of this as I can on my own...
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 11 ай бұрын
I would use the first relay to drive multiple relays downstream they should be wired in parallel. I'm guessing you will probably need a separate circuit for each heater but it really depends on the element and how much it will draw. Your Electrician friend should be able to help with that. Best of luck!

Jose's question: I seen where several people mount these units in a box (palistic) and what would you think about mounting a cooling fan with vent holes to help keep the relay heat sink cool ... if so would you wire it with the main power supply so it stays on when in use. I also would like to use this to control two different different units one being an oven for powder coating and the other to control the temp of my lead pot for casting lead bullets ... I would probably use a plug as to change the thermocouple. Also I assume you have the temperature adjustment set to the maximum to what ever you are controlling when using this controller. Your video is the best I have found to explain how these controllers work and the simplicity of wiring them ... good teacher thanks for you input!

Hi I’m not great at electrical stuff but I’m trying to get a cartridge heater setup wired to one of these and I have two (possibly silly) questions. Why is there no ground connection made on that whole circuit? And can you just use any old power cable cut of and connected to the circuit or does it have to be a specific kind? Please help! Cheers

The relay and PID do not call for a ground. For safety, I passed on one to the oven from the mains connector. I would stick with wire rated for the expected amperage for the heaters.

@@ExtremeDIYGuy Yeah I’m not sure how cooling is suppose to work. It says (reverse action) heating and (forward action) cooling. Actually it does use a 110 heating element. To drive a 220 connection I would add a second relay for the 2nd hot leg. A more elegant solution might be a dpst relay that can handle two load seperate circuits

I’d like to use a PID to control the speed of a fan in a outdoor wood boiler. Right now the AC 110v fan is either on or off based on water temperature. I want to put a PID between the thermostat and fan so that I can sense the flue temperature and slow the fan down when the flue temperature rises above a certain point. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think you will need a PID controller with an analog output. But beyond that I'm not sure how you would regulate a 110 or 220 device. I would need to do some research if I needed to get that done for one of my projects.

The PID is designed not to over shoot the temp. So as it gets closer to the set point it tries to slow down the temp rise by cutting down the power output. It does this using pulses.

Great video! I’m researching to install a PID on my espresso machine. Your video gives great insight into the wiring and a general overview of how a PID works. I’ve seen most PID systems just turn the heating element on and off like your light bulb, is there a way to instead have the PID adjust the power that goes into the heating element(like what a dimmer switch does) in order to be more precise with the temperature? I’m asking because in the case of an espresso machine, the temperature the PID would be reading is of the boiler not the actual water temperature.

I’ve setup many industrial loops with Allen Bradley PLC’s in my day maintaining +-2 degree tolerance’s. Even after performing AT at different stages with this thing, it always sits well below SP (10-20 degrees). In my experience, this is telling the P/gain is not adequate to drive the process. Hi, I have a question, how can an alarm be installed in that controller?
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Terminals 1 and 2 have a NO output. Not sure if there is voltage present there or not. As an alternative, you could tap the control output with a buzzer or light (in parallel).

Would this work on an analog electric smoker? The ones that have the dial to set the temp? I just got a 30” smoker to use as a powder coating oven but it’s hard set it to the correct temp with the dial.

It would, but you would have to disconnect the heating element from thebuilt in controller and connect it to the new controller

@@ExtremeDIYGuy Did you end up adding this on your analog smoker? If so, what was your best method to connect the element to the controller? I thought perhaps small lugs on the ends? Also, what is the preferred way to mount this, inside a metal box? Im not very proficient on this, just looking to setup a small hobby powercoating oven and the size of these smokers fit the bill.

@@misfitkulture4123 I did, I added a female plig to the output of the relay, The I also added a male plug (both heavy duty 20a) to the heating element of the smoker. I think the best enclosure for this would be a metal box

I want to use 2 lightbulbs as my heat source. Can I put connect a second lightbulb right along side the first one or do I have to use different ports? Sorry I don’t know shit about wiring
@ExtremeDIYGuy
@ExtremeDIYGuy 3 жыл бұрын
You can wire the lightbulbs in parallel and should be fine.
