This video is great. Making that rig with the junction boxes to show the path of the mains power connections throughout the circuit was a superb idea👍 The only thing I will say is, the earth (CPC) is there to protect you, not the cable. The cable is protected by the overcurrent device in the consumer unit, usually an MCB (or a BS3036 fuse in old installations) and, of course, there is also the 3A fuse in the switched spur. Imo, yours is the clearest explanation and best thought out video I have seen on wiring for a heating system. Keep making them mate. Subscribed😊👍
@HeatingGeek
@HeatingGeek 4 жыл бұрын
Nice one. Of course, the earth is there to protect the person. I didn't make that clear. :-) Hopefully, people will get the point with it though. I took some time to decide how to video this. Wiring is really easy when you understand it but a wiring centre makes it look difficult. I will get back to youtube soon. :-)
@kendoknackersackee
@kendoknackersackee 4 жыл бұрын
@@HeatingGeekYou should definitely keep doing it the way you're doing it. Perhaps make it the next part of this series so you end up with a finished rig that represents how things would look in a real world installation. I saw somewhere in the comments that you say your brother is a spark. Have you thought about asking if he wants to get involved with some of your videos at some point so you can cover lots of aspects of electrical and heating? I reckon you'd even give John Ward some competition and he is the guru of all things electrical 😅👍 I can imagine how difficult it is to find the time to prepare and make videos for KZbin but keep making them, you're giving learners an indispensable resource.

Hi Ollie, just found your channel and enjoying the content and problem solving. In this vid at the point you mention the earth is there to protect the cables! You show the Drayton room stat and the back plate doesn’t have a terminal for number 4 which when you show connecting up the back plate then does have a terminal four where you connect the grey for heating off.i only noticed as I have the Drayton stat which only has the terminal 3 which you connected the blue for water as in your example. Keep up the good content. 👌 Ps. Just watched again and what I thought was the room stat was in fact the programmer back plate so resolved. Would be good to see wiring the wiring center however, we appreciate the time and effort you put into making these vids for us and it’s appreciated. Steve.👍

Hi I’ve been thinking about getting a nest or hive system for a while but thought it would be a complex task. After watching a few KZbin videos, I’m convinced it should be quite easy but the system in my house is slightly different to things I’ve seen on here. The house was built in 2013 and was installed with a very complex Danfoss (hence the need change) controller near the boiler. It is a pressurised water tank type system. There is a separate upstairs and downstairs heating zone valve and a hot water valve. The downstairs has a non adjustable thermostatic sensor which is set by adjusting the controller. The upstairs has another programmable thermostat (looks very similar to the controller). I don’t want to have to buy 2 new systems to control the upstairs and downstairs. I suppose if I buy one system, I could parallel both zone valves in the wiring centre and remove the upstairs stat and wiring? The boiler is downstairs in the kitchen and the wiring centre is upstairs in the cupboard with the water tank and valves. I don’t think the NEST system would work for the 12v dc stat supply as I’d have to run a cable all the way back to the kitchen to pick up the supply for it. As the hive seems to be a stand alone , am I correct in thinking this should be the one to buy?

@@tmothyadams Hive system ? Seems like you're going from 'shove a bit more coal on luv' to beam me up Scotty without considering what you really want. What I want is a heating system that I don't have to tweak at all year in year out yet if there's a blip in routine, a simple press of a button is all that's needed to satisfy my needs. I've absolutely no need for remote control - and I'd expect that to be true of 90% of the population. Is your life that random ?

Also In the real world where would the live and earth go if you are only using the neutral to the room stat? @@HeatingGeek In a friend's house, I was standing on the loft ladder having added some wiring to his bathroom. I was checking my work and used a neon screwdriver - on the earth terminal - and it lit. Obviously I explored this and determined the power to light the neon was coming from me going to the earth wire ! Seems you have some funky wiring ! I've a bunch of those programmers and have never seen anything displayed while not powered ! I know they have a button cell clock battery in them.

What’s your view of the idea of connecting the MZV grey to the same terminal as MZV brown?
@HeatingGeek
@HeatingGeek 4 жыл бұрын
I have done it to get me out of trouble a few times. Im not sure of the implications of doing it though. I think the perm Live is meant to stop the valve seizing somehow..... I can't remember now. Somthing to so with the Hz. Maybe..
@maxmerton
@maxmerton 4 жыл бұрын
Swings and roundabouts. I see quite a few cases where the motor is working but the microswitch has fused closed. Customers are baffled by the fact that the boiler is cycling. Wiring grey to the heating demand means that the boiler won’t fire unless there’s a real demand from the ‘stat. It also reduces the number of live terminals when the programmer mode is ‘off’, which can help fault-finding when there are lots of zones. I can’t see a downside to this. I think ‘permanent live’ has a more important meaning in a 3-port valve.

An easy way to think about it Garry ; all the Earths & Neutrals are Common - just connected together. You’re only concerned with the Permanent Live & the Switched Lives. Much of house wiring is the same!! You’ve a two channel programmer/timeswitch, one channel for the HW & one for the CH, on an S plan the two circuits remain separate all the way through the controls, the only time they become ‘Common’ is at the Switched Live to the boiler/Pump👍 Don’t think about it too deeply or you’ll get confused.

@Ex3t3r
@Ex3t3r 4 жыл бұрын
Listen to what he has said, the yellow cable was to illustrate only the permanent 240v supply, obviously in reality you would use a different colour cable as you have suggested. You can sleeve the blue wire to the cylinder stat with a different coloured heat shrink sleeve for purposed of I.D at both ends
@HeatingGeek

I get your point. However, I was just trying to separate both things in peoples minds. Also, Heating systems use every colour including green-yellow as live/switch. A truer video would use red and black singles but would be even harder to explain. :-)

Martin Asher I agree to an extent. We’re able to wire systems Martin. For those like mouse who would struggle wiring a plug top this is a good start as it shows the sequence. Spur / programmer (timer) / stats / valves / boiler. Once they understand that bringing the wiring center into it may work better. All I can say is I didn’t have all this info to learn from. I learn from a diagram .It couldn’t be easier now days with the likes of Ollie doing this type of thing.
