Really impressed by this - thanks so much for your great content. Question for you, Jerry: does looking at comedy as a science take away some of its human appeal? When you begin labeling types of jokes, types of laughter, and cycling through combinations of laughter elements, do you reduce comedy to a less genuine, more formulaic product? For this reason, might your approach be more appropriate for improv, where algorithms are more necessary for quick-witted responses, or do you think it's just as applicable for stand-up?
@JerryCorley8 жыл бұрын
Great question! I would say, for the short term the analytical side of anything can affect your freestyle creativity, but when it just becomes a part of you, you'll find that you really expand as a comic. Because you know all the Triggers and Structures inherently it makes it easier to be even funnier in the moment. I hope that makes sense. I took tennis lessons. When the pro changed my grip it was totally awkward, but after I got used to it I got so much better so much faster.

Jerry, love the material, but one suggestion: You really should reshoot this so you can give a joke example after each trigger. Examples will bring each point more to life. Reminds me somewhat of when I read English grammar rules. Each rule gave me the info, but it wasn't until I saw it used in the example sentence that I fully comprehended it.

I'm new in this comedy game. Like performing on stage. My question is is it okay to use the audience as part of your stand-up comment.. and is it okay to use personal things that's in your family that contain to you. Only reason I'm asking is. I have a uncle that's white I have 2 months that's mixed I have couple gay cousins in my family and two of them turn yourself into a woman so is that okay for me to talk about especially if they in my family. I am parsley blind and in a wheelchair

The explanation for the "homophobia" joke was funny, as well as the joke itself. Intentional or not, it is some measure of comedy in its very explicableness. Am I making sense? I'm struggling to explain that here. Anyway, it was all good stuff and I appreciate your insights.

You forgot to refer to Relativity, which in your last joke you referred to several times (How homophobia is relative to the discussion of phobias.)
@JerryCorley10 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. This whole online format has changed so this is the first time I'm seeing these comments. Relativity is incongruity. There are no truly Universal Comedy Structures, so relativity is associative comedy. It's the comedy created by associating one idea to another by using "is-like" or a similar structure in your dialogue. Bill Burr uses this when he says, "The guy that works at Home Depot wants to bang as many hot chicks as a celebrity does, but he can't because chicks don't dig lumber." That's a great example of hiding the structure of "is-like."
@touchthemicmondays59578 жыл бұрын

i really how to learn how to be comedian- I thought was comedian, until they told me to tell a Joke, and draw a picture of my favorite comedian. they told to tell joke, but I two serious tell a joke. than a woman ask to tell a joke, because my mind was on my money.
They say comedy is a science... in the cumquat quarterly.

I disagree. If you time the tickling right after the punchline it really heightens the laughter. Especially on a weak joke.

There are a ton of beginners who don’t know this and experienced people that run into writer’s block or simply tell stories with an idea and a suitcase full of hope that the story will be funny. Showing this simple example can help. Also, you’d be amazed at how many comics that are working don’t know this concept, because they’ve never taken the time to explore what triggers laughter and how to structure a story so it pulls those triggers.
