There's a single beat right in the middle where the drummer appears to have three arms because of the two cymbal hits and the snare occurring at the same time. Great video by the way, very simple and concise.

PS: Unless you're planning on playing the groove on a kit, I actually recommend leaving in those occasional three-armed drummer hits, because consistency of the pulse is far more important (and leaving out that accent would've been boring!). Three-armed drummers are one of the countless benefits of making music in DAWs :)

Alright - so I should change my DAW from 4/4 to 7/8? Or just leave it in 4/4 and program this kick? And this works for other genres I can tell already.
@HackMusicTheory
@HackMusicTheory Жыл бұрын
Definitely leave your grid in 4|4 and just count the 1/8 notes for your odd time kick rhythm :)

Quick question 🙋‍♂️ What kit are you using? And a follow up, if I may: is it “out-of-the-box” ready or do you process it to achieve that thick and crunchy sound?
@HackMusicTheory
@HackMusicTheory Жыл бұрын
Great question, Jef! We use GetGood Drums, which is Matt and Nolly's company, and Misha's also involved. We use the presets in this pack and they definitely don't need any tweaking: www.getgooddrums.com/collections/software/products/modern-massive-pack

@@HackMusicTheory I have a cool trick I use. I use an 8 sided die, first roll is my first chord, and dictates what scale degree I am using. I then roll the die 3 more times throwing out back to back and any place where the dominant B chord pops up. Would be cool to talk about how to use the dominant chord and it’s scale degree. My challenge comes with taking my harmony and creating vocal melodies. Most of my melodies tend to get very busy. I look forward to the video! Thanks again…

How did you select 7/8 Time Signature for your kicks?

@@HackMusicTheory But didn't you place the kicks as they did for their song? I suppose that perhaps I am asking poorly... ...I'm trying to figure out how you will set up the "Snap" for the 7/8 time and then switch to 4/4 for the snare & hat?
@HackMusicTheory
@HackMusicTheory Жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding your question correctly. Simply work on a 4|4 grid and count the 8th notes in your odd time bars. I definitely recommend keeping the grid in 4|4, otherwise it'll get confusing :)
