My man escaped the deepest and darkest cell from the most fortified prision in China. Defeated in a 5v1 the most fearsome and powerful warriors the Valley of Peace had. Completely destroyed his former master in a 1v1 battle after a long journey. And he STILL NEEDED Shifu’s approval and the Scroll’s powers to believe he was a real powerful warrior. That’s how little self confidence Tai Lung has. “Who denied me my destiny?” He completely believed Shifu was in charge of his destiny, and not himself.

one of my favorite moments with him is when he finally opens the scroll and sees his reflection and says "Its empty!" in utter disbelief. Which tugged at my heart strings so much, because his sense of worth isn't self generated, as Po is, but generated by others approval. I felt it deep in my heart, because as you said, he's relatable. You try so hard, work endlessly, to fulfill the expectations and dreams of someone you care deeply for...only to come to a realization that they either dont have your back, or there is someone always better. So in the end it feels like you wasted all that time and effort, and dont see the value in yourself or even your skills.

Also, notice how Tai Lung says “it’s empty”, while Po says “it’s blank”. I’ve seen someone elsewhere point this out to make a point: Tai Lung sees himself as empty, while Po is a blank slate with potential. Or something along those lines.

The best part is that when Po gets ready to leave, Shifu gets to see he's made the same mistake again (this time, contextualized in a way that makes it exceedingly easy to see and hard to ignore) - he was too busy trying to push people to be what he wanted them to be (in Po's case: gone) instead of helping them to be the best people they could (something that could actually create a great dragon warrior)

One of my favorite quotes is during Shifu and Tai Lung's fight. "Who filled my head with dreams!? Who pushed me to train until my bones cracked!? He never thought he would actually hear those words leave shifus mouth and he IS moved by it but he's gone way too far and it's just too late in his eyes to turn around. And so he doubles down and convinces himself he's right and that making shifu see things the way he did wasn't actually what he wanted anymore, it didn't really matter. I've always said this movie is about shifu and Tai lung even tho po is the protagonist. Like the og karate kid.

If Shifu had stayed with Tai Lung that day, told him that: "I am proud of you. I don't care about any scrolls or titles. However, Shifu always preferred Oogway, even to his most beloved Tai Lung.

I think there should be more focus on the fact that it is Shifu's fault for making Tai Lung that way. The appeal of Tai Lung is that... We, as an audience, understand that Tai Lung did not reach this point for no reason and we sympathise with his pain and the weight of expectation - something which every single one of us experiences. Tai Lung did not want to be the dragon warrior. Tai Lung wanted for Shifu to love him. That made all the difference.

Kung fu panda is also about Shifu learning what it means to be a true dragon warrior. Thats why he was so dismissive with po, and couldnt understand what oogway saw in him. He didnt know that a Dragon Warrior is not only about physical strength but also mental strength. A balance of skill and peace of mind which Tai-lung lacked compared to po Shifu projected his own idealization of what a dragon warrior should be in Tai lung. And as a result Tailung became a colateral damage of Shifu flawed expectations and teaching methods. I love how kids movies used to be so thoughtful back in the days

Not really. Yes we all feel for Tai Lung, but few of us become Tai Lung. Believe it or not, you are expected to nit go on a rampage and destroy cities, if you try for something, and don't get it. No it is not Shifu's fault that Tai Lung went mad. As Shifu said, he was just sorry that he didn't see what Tai Lung was becoming / what Shifu was turning him in to. Why are you not being honest about what Tai Lung wanted? You say he just wanted Shifu's love. He had it. Shifu said he was always proud, and he was sorry. Then Tai Lung said, "I don't want your apology, I want my scroll." Yes, Tai Lung just wanted the power, which is why he was rejected in the first place, and why he became villainous.
@Thegameshadow1
@Thegameshadow1 Ай бұрын
@@JayS.-mm3qr This implies that Tai Lung always was intrinsically self centred and hungry for power. Unless we think he was always unstable in the head - discounting someone"s nurture for their ENTIRE life is ludicrous. He should have been raised better. Imagine you are raised to believe you only have one purpose and then be expected to show maturity and understanding when that was not explicitly highlighted and engrained into you. This is ignorance. This is like saying "why didn't you know better" when no one taught you what that can be. Shifu does not get to walk scott free and to say "Tai Lung was always like this". Rubbish.

Tai Lung. a man who was left alone, unconditionally given love by Shifu, was told that he WOULD be the dragon warrior. was told that he was destined for greatness, but when he was denied his greatness, it wasn’t upset. he was only upset when his father, the man who promised him everything didn’t even say a word in his defense. he felt abandoned, the only thing in the world that never let him down was his own power, hence why he attacked

@ “Not your fault? Who filled my head with dreams?”. From this line we can INFER that Shifu told him he was to be the dragon warrior, which is why he believes he deserves the scroll so much. not everything has to be said. Tai Lung is a child seeking an apology

@@SuitedFish Shifu does apologize, Tai Lung then say "I don't want your apologies, I want my scroll". And saying that the line "who filled my head with dreams" infers that Shifu told him he was going to be the dragon warrior is kinda dubious at best. Shifu could very well be meaning that Tai Lung would be one of the Furious Five, or simply that he would be the next great Kung Fu master after Shifu passed away/retired
@SuitedFish
@SuitedFish 3 күн бұрын
@ he realized that he had already gone too far even tho he got an apology which is why he said he didn’t want it. it was too late. And Tai Lung was already stronger than the Furious five before he got imprisoned so it’s very doubtful that he would’ve been promised that. He has such a fixation to be the dragon warrior bc he was meant to be the best. Shifu trained him and told him that he will be the best, and the best if the dragon warrior, so it only makes sense that shifu would just straight up tell him he’s mean to be the dragon warrior. It’s a movie, meaning they only have limited time, they don’t show everything because the audience is able to infer what happened. it only makes sense that he was told he would be the dragon warrior, otherwise, shifu would not have put tai lung in front of Oogway to finally see if he was told he the dragon warrior. shifu 100% would not spring a test like that on his adopted son

This is actually explained pretty well in both real life and in the movie, we see Mantis practicing acupuncture on Po after his training, which obviously is real, though a better showing of this would be pressure point combat, there are pressure points or areas with lots of nerves that are particularly sensitive (ex- the neck, the thigh, under the shoulders) that are either painful or makes you go limp, best seen when Oogway incapacitates Tai Lung or when Tai Lung beats the 5

I'm pretty sure at one point he yells at Shifu "Who pushed me until my bones cracked!?", Poe instead was showered with unconditional love. While Tai Lung felt he had to EARN his love. I don't know that the Furious Five were necessarily clean- Tigress let her desire to prove Ooguay's choice of Po wrong lead her to the reckless decision to challenge Tai Lung herself. Now, that wasn't driven from a place of obsession like with Tai Lung, but I do think her ego was very much bruised by Po's selection- I think in her mind she was the worthy one. Thankfully she ended up respecting the decision, since her higher priority was that the Dragon Warrior was properly selected and could be the hero that defends the Valley. Which itself is a good foil to Tai Lung's own reaction to his ambitions being blocked by Ooguay's decisions. Tigress didn't do anything underhanded. She didn't sabotage Po, while she wasn't particularly nice to him at first, she had something Tai Lung didn't properly have: Respect for the process.

They have a very secure relationship, in the firecracker chair scene Po's tone and face when he confessed he love Kung Fu he knew that his dad would be shock, but still supports him, but for Tai Lung... I'm not sure if Shifu ever knew his hobby, or if he even have one. And you know what? it's not entirely Shifu's fault, he is a Master, a teacher. Sure, he have father like moments with Tai Lung, but at the end of the day Shifu still saw him as a student. Mr. Ping raised Po well because he already made decision to be a dad since he first took Po in.

Another great point is during the fight between Shifu and Tai Lung when Shifu tells him that he's always been proud of him. Tai Lung actually stops for a moment and seems almost heartbroken at what is happening, but after 20 years of festering in prison, Shifu's validation no longer does anything for him which prevents Tai Lung from becoming a redeemable villain. His obsession has driven him to such lengths that when Shifu says he'd rather die than give him the scroll, Tai Lung is actually willing to kill him to get what he feels is owed to him, leading to the necessary intervention of Po.

We need a short or something to flush out his character from KF1 to KF4. His character arc seems too rushed to just be included in the 4th movie. During his time in the spirit realm he seemingly forgot his ambitions and suddenly is fine with being imprisoned (again) but this time in the spirit realm. Hes calm, understanding and almost pacifistic.

Most of the time, villains are greatly written when they're just purely evil with desires and revenge and no layers nor complexity involved at all which was always enjoyable like the Disney villains as example. Not to mention avoids tragic or sympathy since they're fine without them. You may disagree but I hope you understand what I'm saying regardless.

Honestly, keeping Tai Lung imprisoned the way he was, is worse than just killing him. He just dwells, restricted, full of pent up anger and pain, unable to feel the joys of life. And he's the embodiment of that one meme - "you fucked up, you should have killed me." .

@ 11:40 I started to genuinely see what Ive been doing wrong in my own pursuit of learning about and learning Kung Fu, and as the video continued with "His sense of self worth wasn't tied to the recognition of others." I genuinely shed a tear. Thats goofy I know but, heres the thing: Kung Fu is a discipline I took up by chance looking to change my life around, for the sake of practicing something good for my body and mind. But along the way I honestly lost the way of what I once practice for, I wanted to be a Sifu or Teacher, Master, whatever we wanna call it one day to finally be taken seriously by others, so I started chasing the recognition of others so extremely that I burn myself out and even switch styles based off of "what would make me a master ""quicker"". Now I can finally understand that the title should come as I persue it out of passion for the art, but not for desire of being famous or being approved of by my peers, and I should do what I originally did, learn Kung Fu. Thank you video essay person on KZbin recommended to me, this has saved my martial arts journey truly. To anyone who actually read this: Be authentic, be you

I remember the Scene when he got the blue Fire on his paws. (which could be Hotter then normal Fire!!) Using it to fight harder. The Anger and Sadness in him yelling "Everything I did, I did to make You proud! Tell me how proud you are Shifu!" and immediately after a few more blows the scene goes from pure anger and energy to sadness and stillness. The Hotter blue fire flicked off his hands as he just stares as Shifu on the Floor. I remember that because Shifu was basically on the defense the entire time. Showing how hesitant Shifu was to hurt (What i think) was still his son. And Tai Lung paused to listen to him. HE PAUSED!! he wanted Validation even Then!!

10:56 the thing that causes the difference in their goals is the idea that tai lung was raised on Kong fu and the idea that he was the dragon warrior but po was raised in a small humble home so when tai lung is turned down from the role it destroyed him because that was his purpose for life and the betrayal from the man he saw as his father and when all you have in your life is your father and king fu and your father betrays you then you’ll be shaken but po was from humble beginnings and when the higher role was presented he humbly accepted so thats the difference

Po also sought validation. He told Shifu that it was better that he yelled at him and said he smells then living another day being himself. Po sought self validation while Tai Lung sought validation from Shifu. The only reason why Tai Lung went off the rails was because he was told he was evil. For no reason. Shifu, the soul person that Tai Lung longed to be proud of him and love him, never stood by him when told “yeah your son is gonna be an evil asshole.” That’s crushing to have someone you love think that after all you’ve accomplished meant nothing anymore because some old turtle comes along and says you’re evil so you must be evil So Tai Long seeks validation to proove his worth. Po sought validation for himself so he feels like he’s worth something

Oogway only looked out for himself. He used Po to stop Kai, he used Shifu to train Po, and he didn’t stop Shifu from accidentally abusing Tai Lung so he could use him to make Po a hero to obligate him to stop Kai. Oogway had well over a decade to help Tai Lung before he was too far gone but instead had a convenient vow of silence that ended right when Tai Lung fell.

So I’m not going to use this for a “vengeful” villain. But I am going to use this for A villain. But your line about “the demonstration exceeds the expectations built” resonated with me there. I think I can work a way into hyping this villain up as an intelligent person who is dangerous because of their planning. But then have not only the hype surrounding them lul you into a false sense of understanding. But also reveal that in actual combat they are not to be trifled with as well

I wonder if the writers of Ninjago got inspiration for Morro’s backstory story form Tai-Lung as both have similarities: -Both were taken in by their master. - Both were trained by their master/adopted guardian. - They were led to believe that they would become “the chosen one” which led to them being overconfident and arrogant. - Both were livid when they weren’t granted that position of power and sought vengeance against their former master. While it could’ve been a big coincidence and I’m not sure if other villains had this similar backstory but both are great antagonists that have a good with to their character.

I always found it weird that many people view Tai Lung as a good guy turned bad, or that what was told to him from Oogway was messed up. While I agree that Shifu shouldn't have kept promising him something that was mever truly certain, Shifu really wanted him to be. It is understandable on both sides, but the only person to blame for his downfall is Tai Lung himself. I think what really proves the fact that Oogway was not wrong, while Tai Lung is being denied, is that he's not just sad. He's not just disappointed. He commits village genocide, to multiple villages, and sets his heart for only revenge for decades. The news he got was not the turning point, as at some point, with or without the news, something else would have made him snap to the point where he would turn to horrendous acts. Tai Lung's lack of self control and mental discipline was his downfall, it wasn't the false promises, it was that he oniy viewed himself one way, and if that wasn't not the way life was actually going to go, then he felt justified to do anything else to achieve it.
