Great technique! Tip: you can mirror the image before printing it and then you don’t have to rewrite the words with sharpie to be able to see them 😊

@angela hogan any cooking spray will work, after you print, just spray the design, pat it with a paper towel. You should be able to see your design when you turn the paper over backwards.

I've done it on both. Sometimes if you do it on a chilled cake, the piping gel doesn't transfer right away. If that happens, I leave the wax paper on the cake for a few minutes, the color from the piping gel will transfer and you can still trace it!

All your videos are great because they are not just educational but your energy gets us inspired to actually tackle new techniques! What do you think of this idea for St. Patrick's day: I want to bake a flat cake-- not sure what flavor yet-- but then pipe green, white and orange 'plaid' with different size tips...wide, medium, narrow, etc...then, pipe some 'fringe' down the edges with narrow lines in the matching colors...what do you think? ( I wish you'd do it first.. haha)

Melted chocolate probably won't transfer as easily as piping gel does.

You could use white chocolate to write on the parchment paper, then let it dry. Gently pick up the letters and stick on your cake😁 That’s how I do it anyways and you can dye the white chocolate any color you want. You can also use buttercream and freeze it then peel off the letters off the parchment paper and place on cake

It dripped before when I used a brand that wasn't really thick. I prefer the wilton or CK brands of piping gel. The only thing is that plastic wrap will stick to piping gel, so be careful when you wrap up your cakes!

Hello!! Thank you so much for all your helpful videos, I'm new to cake decorating and I've been learning a lot from you! I know this is an older video but I was wondering if you had any advice on what I'm doing wrong here lol. So I like to decorate with Italian Meringue Buttercream, and I've been trying this method because i suck at free handing the writing (I have the wilton brand piping gel since the one you have linked was out of stock) and I let my cakes sit in the fridge/freezer for about 30 mins to harden, trace the reverse writing on wax paper, trace it in piping gel, go to stick it on the cake and *some* of the writing does stick, but not all of it, and even worse the wax paper always inevitability messes up the smoothness of the icing on the rest of the cake :/ If you see this and respond, thank you in advance!

Hi! Unfortunately I haven't worked with meringue buttercream, so I don't know too much about it. However, sometimes the writing doesn't stick to the American buttercream. So when that happens, I keep the wax paper with the piping gel on the cake for about 10 minutes. The gel may not transfer, but the color kind of does so I can see a fine line that I can trace. Sorry I don't know more about IMBC!

You can do either one. If it is just crusted, then you have more of a chance of messing up the icing because the icing is soft. I personally prefer to do it once it is cold out of the fridge. If it is too cold, sometimes the letters don’t transfer that quick, so I leave the letters on the wax paper stuck to the cake for a few minutes before I peel it away.

Yes! I keep the piping gel in the icing bag and store that in a ziplock bag until I'm ready to use it again. (It doesn't have to be refrigerated.)

I've been doing it like this for so long, piping gel transfers really easily from the wax paper to the cake. You could trace it with royal icing, but I just trace with piping gel because I already have it in the bag and it's just easier for me! It's kind of old school, you'll see it a lot on ice cream cakes.

Yes you can! The cake that I demonstrated on is iced in buttercream. You can do it on fondant as well.

Yes! So the reason why I use piping gel is that it transfers onto the cake easily. If you want, you can use clear piping gel to transfer the words on the cake and trace the clear piping gel with buttercream instead of more piping gel.
