THANK YOU!!! This is wonderful information! I am currently nearing the end of my 4 year degree for Intervention Specialist and nearing the end of my IEP Writing course that requires a key assessment of writing an entire IEP based on a fictitious student. The professor is a stickler for perfect PLAAFP statements and SMART goals, and I am SO lost! I currently have a 4.0 GPA and I am so worried that I will not get an A in this particular class. UGH. I have bookmarked your wonderful video for near future reference! Does anyone know if there is a completed (fictitious) IEP example online that can help with appearance and structure?

Do you have to be a teacher to physically write an IEP? What does the law say? I help students in the school but the Special Education teacher asked me if I could write some of the IEP's. I assumed only a licensed and certified teacher could do it. Please advise. Thanks 😄

In every place and state I have ever worked, it had to be a certified teacher. I'm not sure if this is law or district policy. I don't believe it's best practice. I personally think that it's not a good idea for you to write the whole IEP. Your input can be very valuable if you work with the child, but I don't think your duties should extend to that. Your obligations should be to the students during your hours. If they expect you to do more, they should pay you.

No, only a special education teacher who can interpret evaluation data can write IEPs. If you happen to have the LBS I certification/endorsement added on your license, then you technically can write IEPs. You can write your data on a student's behavior + performance + data for a section of his/her/their IEP like the Math or English goal. You can also write-provide information on their general academic performance [if student is in your class] and social-emotional state. It's more like contributing, but not being the main writer of the document. It's like a cop asking a fireman to do the investigation + paper work at a car accident.

You can hold an amendment meeting and update the goal or add another goal based on the student's needs.

My wife took 6 hours to write an iep. Is that normal? I want to help her but I don't know how?

It can be at first. Once you figure out the process, it goes faster. I can write a standard one in about an hour and a half. A more involved case with a lot of services and goals can take me 3 hours or more. I tend to write little bits at a time over several days to break it up.
