I just watched the secret of nimh with my bf and told him this is the only movie I know with a strong mother lead character!😂

There are a few others like Mrs. Brisby, but she's definitely the one who stands front and center for me. Most of the other strong mother types are either in found family stories or in the grittier action flicks. Which again makes this movie stand out, since it's a kid cartoon done by people who were convinced (and rightfully so) that children can handle weightier themes.

Very interesting breakdown! At first i thought that characters traits and strengths/weaknesses were same, but the more examples you gave the more i understandood the difference. I feel like this video would be useful to a lot of writers with such concrete examples 👏👏👏

So, a strong female character is less what she accomplishes, but more how she accomplishes it, right? She doesn’t need to be extremely powerful, but she does need a strong personality, and a strong will. Phrasing it like that sounds almost easy to write. Right now, my own character (Alice) is struggling, trying to figure out how she can save her family, aid in achieving the main goal, put the wandering souls to rest, and stay in control of her own mind as the antagonist fights her for control. All of this weighs on her mind as the pressure gradually builds up. It’s not her burden that makes her strong, but rather how she bears her burden, how she approaches it, and what she does about it. Is that about right? I want to say that I know what I’m talking about, but I really just don’t 😂

You've got the right idea! For Alice, she's a got a lot to do and she isn't He-Manning her way through everything with ease. The struggle is important. But also, you'll want to make the reader care about her family like she does. Show the struggle between her and antagonist. And of course, you'll want to make the reader care about Alice, by helping them get to know her. If you need to, take a step back and use the categories of personality, strengths and weaknesses, relationships, goals, and how they change over the story to create a kind of character sheet. You'll find yourself adding all kinds of notes to it about history and so forth. Sometimes it helps to have a a very messy spread of everything about your character in front of your eyes. I say that because it gives you a chance to see them in general as a person before you start writing. And then as you write, everything will either fall into place, or certain aspects will be refined or replaced to better suit the story. Haha! Writing characters is tough, and even when you think you know what you're doing, a character might come out of nowhere and completely challenge you despite all your preparations. But don't become discouraged. Just keep on working at them, because it really does pay off!

Hey really inspiring episode here, I love how you broke things down for each character but was kind of disappointed to not see Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica show up! She's has such an interesting arc where one could say she almost regresses in multiple ways to achieve her goal. Her love and loyalty never wane but the way she goes about showing it does to drastic and tragic effect. Episode 10 of the series is so efficient and effective in its storytelling and is probably my favorite anime episode of all time because of this. I when it comes to unique and physically strong characters like Asuka, helping the audience understanding why they've chosen to become so tough and muscle bound helps to remove doubts about the writer's intent for designing them in such a way. When looking at Abby from The Last of Us 2, I think it's clear that her safety net was removed when she lost her father and she's determined to never be in a position where she can't defend herself or what she loves. Her solution is weightlifting and becoming a physical force to be reckoned with. ...We then also get to see that unravel when her solution fails to achieve her goals. This is not to say there aren't physically strong women like Asuka in real life but that understanding why a character design is going against the average or for lack of a better phrase "the norm" helps remove an audience's doubts about the writer's intent and allows them to sink into the plot more easily.

Thanks! As to why I didn't include more girls and women beyond these four, it was already a long video. I have considered doing more of these videos for other characters based on this analysis' reception. There's a lot more strongly written female characters who would be fun to analyze and draw inspiration from! As for Asuka's strength and muscle building, as stated in the video she needs to be physically strong in order to operate her mech suit. There's a lot more details about that in the book. As for other in-book reasons not included in the video: genetics. She got all the size in the family! Haha! And for her culture, all firstborn children are dedicated to the nation's military. That's why I briefly referenced a military class. A social class, that you can explore deeper in the book! All part of my not-so-subtle advertising! ;)

A character that I would recomend to cover if you were to do another episode like this is Vi from the Arcane series. Litteraly the definition of perseverance. Generaly all characters from the series are writtin tremendously so I would recomen looking into it. Its a series on Netflix and the first look at season 2 came out 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the recommendation! If this video does well, we'll certainly do follow-ups. And having a wide variety of strongly written female characters is good for demonstrating that they can be made in more than just the stereotypical, flat way that Hollywood keeps cranking them out.

Well in my opinion, I believe that the physically strong female characters are like Galadriel from The Rings of Power still nuanced and complex. Honestly, I would kindly suggest that you guys should watch, read, and play these anime, books, comics, dramas, films and games such as Sword Art Online, Naruto, Wish, Acolyte, Power Rangers and Kingdom Hearts with your eyes open and see how their female characters are portrayed as strong, intelligent, sweet and caring people both feminine and masculine throughout each of their source materials. Also, I would recommend NOT to read articles that involve negativity aspects against these female characters. Thank you all for being so understandable.

Thank for pointing out writing a well written strong female character, you should focus first on her Character, not the fact she is a woman!

My English is not so good to watch the stand ... I survive on the English -speaking KZbin exclusively with the help of subtitles ... But hey, if the video then stands the video, I will probably absolutely look at him! And I do not mind to hear about the strong men's characters! And possibly about the construction of the arches of the characters. How to make them grow to look natural? Writing is truly incredibly difficult and interesting travel

Doing this video made me realize that we really need to talk about writing believable and strong male characters as well. There's been a tendency to tone them down and make them more emotional. But while men expressing their emotions is healthy and good, it can be done without making them wimps. So, there'll definitely be a follow up video on that topic in the future!
