Small correction: You CAN banish a token as cost. The difference from the graveyard is that there is no "banish zone" so banishing doesn't send a card to a particular place, it simply does a particular thing with it. A recent example is that in Swordsoul when Archnemesis Protos was still legal, you could banish a Swordsoul token from your field to summon the Protos.

The part about not being able to use them for cost when a destination is specified is partially incorrect. Mostly true, but with banishing you can because there is no such thing as an official banish pile. Basically, you can banish a token for cost.

I had an idea for an Xyz monster that summoned itself by tributing tokens on the field, then attaching cards from the deck to itself as Xyz materials. Maybe it could even attach cards from the opposing deck for some light milling power.

Were you aware that the ironic thing of Evenly Matched is that it features several of the Six Samurai monsters going after Great Shogun Shien who winds up, as far as we know, being the only one to die in the encounter? Even better is if your opponent goes right in on you while you control a Great Shogun Shien and they Evenly Matched you, if you keep your Great Shogun Shien, they cannot activate any other spells or traps that turn, by Shiens own effect

I forget but aren't all tokens considered Normal Monsters as well, even if they have effects they can use, they are still classified as Normal so cards like skill drain won't stop tokens from popping their effects like Ojama trio or Fiend's Sanctuary

It’s interesting to me that they just can’t be used for XYZ’s material at all, I would’ve expected that they can be used to summon but cease to exist and therefore can’t be used to activate the abilities that require you to remove attached materials… it makes sense that if you can’t put it into a new zone you therefore can’t put it into the “attached zone” of an XYZ monster. In magic we can move tokens to whatever zone but as soon as it enters that zone it stops existing, unlike in yugioh where you straight up can’t move it to a specified zone and it doesn’t move

The Evenly Matched thing is right for the wrong reasons. It's because it says the opponent has to do it as an action, not because it says they have to banish them FD. If you use another card that works similarly like Evil Twins Ki Sikil & Li La (the Level 8 one), then out of the two cards you keep with that, if you control a Token, you'd have to keep that and you'd only get to choose the one other card, again, because the card says "they must send", and the opponent can't send the Token to the GY. Meanwhile a card like Psy Frame Overload can target Tokens and banish them face down perfectly fine in which case they disappear just as they would if any other card caused them to leave field.

Not quite. OCG ruling on Chaos Scepter Blast explicitly states that tokens cannot be banished face-down, and probably TCG would not rule differently, so until Konami says otherwise, it is a game mechanic that tokens are simply unable to be banished face-down.

If they have two tokens plus other non-tokens, you can activate it, and when it resolves (assuming nothing else changes), they will banish all non-token cards they control and be left with the two tokens on the field.

Evenly matched forces you not to banish the token because it invokes a player action. This is also why evenly matched works on monsters unaffected by trap effects. Tokens can still be “banished face down” by card effect; they will simply cease to exist rather than going to the banished pile.

Cards that gain effects when banished, don't when banished face down. You also can't target specific cards if they're banished face down. Only cards that mention targeting "banished card(s)" can interact with face down banished cards.

So if you play Evenly Matched alone, you control 1 card and the opponent must banish as many cards as they can until they matched your number. Failing that, for reasons like tokens, they banish as many as possible.

You can use tokens for xyz summons. While the xyz monster is on the field, the tokens stay as the material since they have yet to be removed from the field. Whenever a material is used for an effect, then it disappears.
