For the redesign of their new trucks and truck-based SUVs, Toyota decided to design an entirely new hybrid system. The new rear wheel drive hybrid is a polar shift for Toyota which up until now has used a variant of the same hybrid system in everything from a Prius to a RWD Lexus LS. This system is completely different and oddly similar to the F-150 Hybrid.

This V6 hybrid was developed in place of V8 engines and when you calculate the savings versus a similar power V8 then you see how much more efficient it is. That really should have been mentioned. The hybrid drive replaces the extra 2 cylinders.

@@afcgeo882 - this powertrain is literally everything in the non hybrid ICE version, plus, the electric motors/inverter/battery are added. More stuff, more complex. The previous V8 ICE is simple. This twin turbo V6 ICE has fewer cyclinders but the turbo system adds a lot of extra parts. The V8's can run for a lot of miles for sure. This V6, probably very reliable because it's a Toyota, only time will tell.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 8 ай бұрын
@@keithallsop No, not more stuff - more complex. That’s not how engineering works. Batteries and electric generators aren’t complex and what they take away is the total time the engine is running, they lower the RPMs, they reduce the stresses at high loads (starting from stop, going up a hill, towing, etc.) and they eliminate the need for starters and alternators, which means the engine cranks at full power, not reduced power. All of that results in MUCH higher reliability as it greatly reduces engine and transmission wear & tear.

@@afcgeo882 - ICE + hybrid is more stuff and more complex than ICE alone. As I said. QED. It maybe more or less reliable, justified in questioning which is better. Thankfully I only said it was more complex and only time will tell its reliability. Phew.

@@happycamper6352 it comes down to application. Prius uses both Nickel Metal Hydride and Lithium Ion. The Tundra uses just Nickel Metal Hydride, which is a better battery for harsher climates. @happycamper6352
@happycamper6352 Жыл бұрын
@@petevincent74 This has become an outdated comparison. New lithium vehicle batteries have become more resilient to heat and cold for both chemical reasons and external reasons involving supplemental heating/cooling. They're just about at the point where the hot/cold that it takes to affect lithium is already extreme enough to harm NiMH. Plus, in a vehicle that already has an engine, a temporary minor power reduction from temp extremes isn't as bad as the benefits of lithium are good otherwise, since the system gets the batteries in good shape shortly after you get going. Now if you're always in temp extremes, perhaps an option could be offered either way, but I could see that raise production costs.

Hybrid systems don’t have starters. The engines are cranked by the drive battery/generator at full RPM instead of a fraction of that crank power that a 12v battery provides. It’s one of the reasons why a hybrid battery should never be completely emptied.

In this case, the engine *does* have a starter and a standard belt-driven everything, as Toyota wanted to keep them for redundancy purposes. The system will start using the 12V battery and starter after a refuel (for testing) or if it’s too cold for the hybrid system to start the engine.

Or is just not enough to even make a temperature difference in the cab?
@gwot
@gwot 2 жыл бұрын
My current 2019 ES has the battery under the rear seat, it doesn't affect cab temperature any more or less than the 2014 non-hybrid ES I had. The nickel hydride battery has a wide temperature range -20°C to +45°C (-4°F to +113°F), the cab temperature with heater on is a good temperature for the battery, and it actually exhausts outside the car, so in cab temperature isn't effected. Anyone know if this hybrid system with the engine start stop will cause early turbo failures (since the engine is off, turbos do not get cooling), even the non hybrid 2022 Tundra owners manual indicates that after high speeds or towing, you have to run the engine for a minute prior to shutting off to ensure the turbos don’t fail. And yes, I know sometimes manufacturers say that in the manual to cover all basis and the engineers should know better, but….I am more worried about the durability or longevity of the turbos…that’s the only reason I would consider a Toyota and plan on driving the Tundra until it falls apart due to rust.

The hybrid system works way closer to something like a CR-V or RAV4 hybrid than I expected; obviously the electric motor and battery capacity aren’t designed for heavy EV driving, but the engine will shut off for several minutes if driving on 45-65 mph stretches on flat or downhill grades. It can also navigate parking lots almost entirely on electric only, as well as pull out of my slightly uphill driveway. If the driving mode is switched to Tow/Haul or Sport, it behaves very differently where the engine rarely if ever shuts off, and the electric motor becomes solely a boost, even with light accelerations. So far my average mpg around town has been 21-22, which is the same economy I got with my ‘17 Accord Touring V6.

Because half of the time, they could treat this thing as an electric truck and plug it in to charge every night and get virtually 70 miles per gallon while driving it in EV mode only.. The point is , it wouldn't have taken much more to accomplish this-- just a bigger battery basically.
