The very fact that most of HipHop *still* boils down to "Trap beat" nowadays should be evidence enough most beat producers just do whatever everyone else does - i.e. copying formulas and playing it safe, hence everyone sounding the same. And most Rappers are just the same - they *say* they want something unique, but in reality want to keep it safe as well, again ending up in everyone using a Trap beat and being unique only happening within that Trap formula, if at all.

been doing this for 20+ years. "type beats" were never to copy, just sort of portray who i though would sound good or different on it and for algorithm. Ive never tried to make a beat with the intention of sounding like someone else.

You are the minority in that if this is true. Majority of the producers that make "type" beats most def are trying to sound like popular producers because they feel it puts a spotlight on their beats and they try to cater to the knockoff rappers tryna sound like popular rappers that are out. Wanna-be's catering to wanna-be's.

@@cavrenodem2436I definitely think that’s true but that’s how most people start. They hear a style of music that inspires them so much they get into making beats so they can make that style too. They’ll either grow out of it or never find success, but a truly talented creative will always find a way to stand out in an ocean of copy cats.

@@cavrenodem2436 That’s just objectively wrong bro I’ve watched countless interviews of my favorite successful artists. Everybody starts out by copying, everybody. Eminem admits that he used to rap trying to sound like Nas, and Eminem is the best selling rapper of all time besides Drake, who is a pop star so I don’t count it. That’s a different conversation lol.
@cavrenodem2436

@nuh-uhbro765 No sir, that's not wrong at all. The anount of people that fail at music as opposed to succeeding isn't even comparable. Out of every 50 rappers 1 might make. Every 50 producers maybe 5 or 6. The numbers in are nowhere near the numbers out. Not by a long shot. I never said people don't copy, i just said they never succeed doing it. Em may have started one way, but he sounds nothing like Nas, Rakim or Kool G Rap. If he would've stayed on thay copy cat boat, he would still be in Detroit driving for Uber.

Rappers/singers sticking with safe production is why their catalog gets stale. Even legendary rappers like Nas and Eminem fell victim to it. A great example of a rapper experimenting with new styles is Snoop with Sensual Seduction. No one making cliché "Snoop type beats" would've came up with that masterpiece.

I don't think that it's weird. The best artists don't want to focus on the gear. The best producers do that already. If you're a rapper, knowing how to pull off parallel compression on the drum bus doesn't make you a better rapper. Maybe they've memorized a chain of effects that they like on their voice as a starting point. I don't expect the drummer to know how to work a DAW either.

A 'type beat' is a good way for an artist to find beats they like. It gives a description of a sound by naming an artist with a relative sound.... Instead of trying to come up with words to describe the sound...works for the artists, the producer and the algorithm. It is one way of many that you can label or describe a beat in a way that an artist could relate

I make beats that I feel like making beats. I label them type beat because if you aren’t specific with artist x artist (hard/sad) genre type beat then the algorithm doesn’t pick up the beat because nobody who actually makes music looks up genre x year type beat. I know people don’t do that because nobody I make music with in the underground finds beats by typing something that simple. If you wanna find good beats then you gotta get specific with the search, niche artists. Otherwise the beats won’t be unique

It's always so weird to me when people try and use Google Search data to prove a point. Because, honestly, I feel like less and less people do Google Searches regularly. Also, search results are personalized. That's kind of the whole point. So, if you see something as the first result on a Google Search that doesn't really mean much.

I mean imo as someone who produces and really understand the song writing process. IMO most type beat producers are just making melody loop with some minor drum arrangements. The artist is what makes the song good because it’s what’s actually causing the song to feel like it’s progress(vocal melodies outline chords and changes in the chords are what cause songs to feel like they progress change or get bigger or smaller) TLDR: illmind is right beat producers do not make innovation hence why hip-hop is generally speaking perpetually behind other genres, like pop or EDM from a songwriting standpoint

I’ve never made a “type beat” and doubt I ever will. Doesn’t sound like a fun way to make things. Also, hot take? Desired_Rapper is not going to rap over a “Desired_Rapper-type beat”. Random people trying to rip off Desired_Rapper will. I’ve also seen folks pop off with different titles for their songs. I saw somebody pop off (with a banger) with a song titled “Theme For A Shop That Wants You to Leave (politely)”. I clicked that. It was a great song, and an artist who had under 3K subs got over 100k views on that video I’m pretty sure. You don’t have to make a “type beat” to get found. You do have to know how to grab folks’ attention though

So some rappers do use yt type beats, they just don’t use ones labeled for them. They’re trying to find a new sound not something they’ve already done thus why they don’t use their own type beats

they're used to describe beats that are made in the style of a certain artist, for example, "drake type beat" - it's gonna have the same type of sound of a drake song. The name is mostly used in trap beats for rappers and artists to find beats in the style that they wanna make. It's considered a little controversial though because a lot of "type beat" producers rinse and repeat similar drums or just throw them on a loop that they didn't make. Great for artists that want that but overall not a great thing because it's definitely depleting creativity, since they're just trying to create something that sounds like their favorite artist and the producer doesn't bother to experiment. Meaning you get painfully generic music as the end result.
