As a designer from the early 90’s I didn’t truly understand the importance of typography until I went back to school and happened to have one of the greatest teachers ever. He was really the turning point in my design career and his typography teachings will stick with me forever. Thx teach.

I think the debate I see a lot is when the typography is TOO expressive, borderline illegible, but it nails the FEELING. Knowing when to dial it down or amp it up for the sake of the project is the key. Typography lover here, awesome as always ya'll!

I believe that typography is an essential skill that every designer should learn. Having an interior design background, I had the opportunity to learn furniture composition during my summer internship back then, the moment I learn further about typography that's when I realize the ressemblance on how the things we compose, they are somewhat related. As from the book "Geometry of Design" by Kimberly Elam illustrates perfectly on how the famous Barcelona Chair was composed (from all of the angle), the philosophy/feel is actually similar when typographers are composing the letters (x height, overshoot, etc). Not many people realizes this, the challenge would be how do we articulate what we understand so that people could understand our point of view. Maybe if we include more visual connection on how these compositions relate to one another, perhaps that could help more people to grasp the concept of "why typography is important" cheers,

♥ at 50 I like to think I am /starting/ to get the hang of it.... one thing is sure, I love typography... the frustrating part was that even when you can see what is good typography when you begin your path, you are still so far from being able to design something like that from scratch. Endless practice and learning, training the eye to follow how the masters work and the logic behind their choices. I am a fan of manuscripts, and humbled by the skill of some monks from medieval times even. I think the most amazing part is when you are starting to shape and create a whole typography system that works and encompasses solutions, gives freedom by setting the right limitations. Being highly creative, my mind is quite scattered, so it feels extra amazing when I create something so structured, organized and complete. Now I feel like I wasted time when not working on such things, but maybe slow burn is good, and I do feel like I have arrived... to the beginning of a new journey.

@@thefutur I was in my third year of my degree before I actually was given good instruction on Typography & helped. A teacher worked with me & let me borrow their copy of “Thinking With Type” which really opened my eyes to what I was missing. Seeing this video today has been a great reminder of how much I should be practicing my typography to take it from a weakness to a strength. Really looking forward to part three, this has been a great series so far!

I love your work guys. But you should understand that your content is next level, and your editing should be much slower. You talk about some serious topics and I think you should NOT pay attention to the youtube trends and edit those videos so fast. I understand that the attention span is pretty low, but there is some powerful info in many of your videos that are presented so fast that most people are not able to recognise them in this fast edit form! My advice is that you slow down half, and that way make attention to the valuable info that you already make. We follow you because of the quality of the information you release. Not because you optimise video content for a high amount of views. Piece and love!
