How Ukraine's boat drones sank a THIRD of the Black Sea Fleet and changed naval warfare forever

Russia’s Black Sea fleet is sinking - faster than ever.
A third of its ships have now been sent to the bottom of the sea, and while many of them were blown up by missiles, an increasing number are being taken down using drones.
In total, a dozen vessels have been either damaged or sunk by these terrifying little craft which also managed to blow a chunk off Putin’s beloved Kerch Bridge.
But since the start of this year the attacks have really ramped up, with three warships sunk or destroyed within six weeks of each-other.
Here’s everything we know about Ukraine’s killer drone fleets.

Fun fact: the amphibious assault ship Cezar Kunikov was sunk on the anniversary of the death of Cezar Kunikov for whom it was named (14 February 1943 / 14 February 2024).

Well, if you like facts so much, then I'll continue! Caesar Kunikov is a hero of the war against the German Nazis and was mortally wounded in battle in 1943. The ship named in his honor also died in battle against the Nazis, but only Ukrainian ones. And this does not bode well for the Ukrainian Nazis and their patrons in the USA and Europe!

The reason is very simple: Unlike other Navies, the Russian Navy didn't realy learn from the Attack on USS Cole. Yes the Russian Navy improved their CIWS for defending against Speedboat Attacks in 1989. Thats what Drone Boat Attacks are. Only their biggest CIWS System is capable of a Elevation of -25 degrees, the AK-630M2 and AKM-630M1-2 dual rotary 30mm Gun System. Other Systems only have -12 degrees. Leavin a 300-500m blind area in which they can't operate, but those small targets can only be attacked effectivly in close proximity. Of the 50 Ships of the Black Sea fleet, only 10 have the System to defend them, the others have to use AK's and Maschine guns. The Nato Navies faced the same Problem but have upgraded all their CIWS Systems (ie. Phalanx CIWS Block: 1B) to defend against "Speedboat" Attacks till 2015. The Anti Surface Phalanx Block 1B was already developed in 2007 but then rapidly deployed after the attack. Russia started deploying the Anti Surface CIWS in 2008, but not on older Ships only on new ones.

Taiwan is already thinking about buying 200 of these. The US Navy is planning to acquire thousands of them in 2025 to help prevent China from taking Taiwan. Anyhow just imagine hundreds of these going at the ports in China or even the container ships. China must be having second thoughts on a Taiwan invasion if their ports could be destroyed along with all the trade ships.

The adaptability & ingenuity Ukraine has shown is the most inspiring thing right now in this modern era. It's crazy how a country without a Navy has been able to destroy & defend against a country with a huge Navy. The same goes with every aspect of this battle against these war criminals. America might have more resources & advanced items but i guarantee that America is No Where Near as adaptive & versatile as Ukraine has shown. Not just in the troops aspect but in the way that Ukraine's been able to be so adaptive in the overall systems structures & leadership organization roles aspects.. it's hard to describe but i know my country of America is one thing: and that our system, government, leadership, organization is NOT ADAPTIVE or flexible AT ALL. It really limits our ability to adjust, adapt, innovate through the use of ingenuity and resourcefulness... That is one of the key things i admire most about Ukraine. It's been really eye opening to see how you guys have been able to harness such beneficial aspects of ingenuity to try and overcome such a difficult situation and i truly think anyone can learn from you guys.

With the increasing prevalence of drones, the **U.S. Navy** has adapted its ship acquisition strategies to address the challenges posed by low-cost boat drones. Here are some notable changes: 1. **Drone Repellent System (DRAKE)**: - The Navy has equipped its surface ships with the **Drone Restricted Access Using Known Electromagnetic Warfare (DRAKE)** system. - Originally used on Humvees during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, DRAKE is now deployed across the Navy's surface fleet. - DRAKE acts as a protective umbrella by jamming drone signals when they approach the ship, preventing them from getting too close. - It effectively disconnects the signal between the operator and the UAV, ensuring the ship's safety¹. 2. **Cost-Effective Drone Ships**: - The Navy is expediting the development of **crewless surface vessels** to keep pace with advancements in drone technology. - These drone ships could enhance weapon range, scouting capabilities, and command and control². 3. **Autonomous Robo-Boats with Swarming Capabilities**: - The Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is seeking **low-cost autonomous maritime drones** that can operate in packs. - These drones would monitor and intercept adversary ships, providing a cost-effective solution for naval operations⁵. 4. **Budget Allocation for Combatants**: - In its FY 2023 budget submission, the Navy requested funds to purchase **Arleigh Burke-class destroyers** and **Constellation-class frigates**. - Congressional authorizers approved the acquisition of three Arleigh Burke destroyers, maintaining a steady purchase of both large and small combatants³. 5. **Drone Delivery Trials**: - The Navy has successfully completed trials using drones for provisioning ships at sea, offering a less costly alternative to traditional marine vessels, planes, or helicopters⁴. In summary, the Navy is adapting its ship acquisition strategies to counter the challenges posed by low-cost boat drones, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of its fleet.

I wonder how much Taiwan is learning from Ukraine's use of sea drones? Could massive use of sea drones stop a Chinese invasion fleet??? To me, it seems so.

Land based anti shipping missiles are very deadly against anything getting close to the shore. Landing crafts are also vulnerable to regular artillery and anti-tank weapons. What the naval drones add is a long range strike capability.

tiawan has had far more to prepare for an invasion than ukraine has as well. Tiawan is surrounded by water all over. Any attempt to do amphibious assault would get demolished

@@fieldmarshalairsoft3200 That has been my position. The CSIS war game, IMO, is incompetent. Taiwan makes the most advanced chips used in advanced avionics and ECCM systems. With over 2000+ anti-ship missiles, I don't see how an invasion could succeed. PLUS - Taiwan has missiles that can reach 3 Gorges Dam.

In WW2 it was german torpedo speedboats causing havoc, today it's ukrainian drones doing the same in a similar manner. Ahhhh, the evolution of warfare. The more it changes the more it stays the same until an entirely new weapon category enters the field.

The reference to battleships is a misnomer. Battleships are no longer used by the various navies of the world. The voiceover meant warships.
