In this video, Daniel Lopez, D.O. from Osteopathic Integrative Medicine explains how upper lip ties affect craniofacial structure beyond just affecting gaps between the front teeth. In it he discusses how the upper lip ties produce a compression at the intermaxillary suture making the lowering of the palate more difficult.
Because of this, releasing a tongue tie with the intention of contacting and lowering a high, narrow palate also needs to the have the upper lip tie released for optimal results.

What about lower lip ties, should those be released too?

Yes, lower lip ties can cause problems too. Just not necessarily the same as upper lip ties.
