And it wasn’t really that bad of a year. That team would’ve been ranked preseason top 3 if there was no turmoil, so the talent was still there. They ended up losing 7 games, and I think 6 of them were by one possession or less, all without Terrell Pryor and with a first-year coach. Plus, they didn’t start Braxton at first. A better coach could’ve led that team to a BCS game....it’s why Urban led virtually the same team to a 12-0 record the very next season.

@@KevinWidesouls You're not quite correct in your assestment. Luke Fickell is a much better Head Coach that he was ever given a chance to be at Ohio St. Fickell was not allowed to make changes to the coaching staff and was only given a 1 year interim contract while the NCAA Investigation and sanctions rulings was being completed. Much of the Buckeyes woes that season lie at the feet of OC Jim Bollman, the miserable excuse of a QB that was senior Joe Bauserman, and the Tresselball Era virtue of starting upperclassmen, even if there were more talented younger players on the roster. If Fickell would have been allowed to make changes to the staff, and instill his philosophy, that team could have easily won 10+ games.

And Tressel really didn't have much to build. Don't forget that, aside from Cooper's dismal failure against Michigan, he was a very good coach as well. Ohio State has never really faced adversity in the sense of a talent or coaching dropoff, even despite having two scandals involving head coaches in less than ten years. What also helps Ohio State always be great is Ohio State doesn't have to worry about an in-state rivalry to compete in recruiting with. This means there's a monopoly in high school players' interest in Ohio State when picking schools and wanting to stay in Ohio. Obviously a lot of other factors at play, but I think this is a big part in why Ohio State does so well. They're only true rivalry is Michigan. I live in Florida. We have UF, FSU, Miami, and now UCF. Imagine if there was only ONE SINGLE Florida college for players to choose on or leave the state. Think about the insane number of legendary players from the NFL that grew up in Florida. That gives you an idea of how big of an advantage it is when you don't have to worry about another university in Ohio stealing the top prospect from Ohio.

The Ohio State football infrastructure was built so many years ago that it is laughable for anyone to say Urban Meyer built Ohio State. The state of Ohio has always had the best high school football of all the Big 10 schools until Penn State joined the conference, and they had been recruiting Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and other states previously. Ohio State gets more blue chippers than any other Big 10 school, with the only competition for blue chippers being Penn State and Michigan. Urban Meyer retooled a machine that only needed a few new or refurbished parts. The only other schools that compare are Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame and USC.

Urban solidified a stellar program and made it one of the best NFL proving grounds for young kids. He did by recruitment and getting the best position coaches to love them and coach them up. He was vilified by ESPN and they tried to blame him for violations. That was the straw that broke his back! Look at his last yr when he and Shelly embraced and she said you did it you beat TUPN again The man had stress related health issues and most folks dogged him saying it was an excuse especially those liberal fools at ESPN Look now he is the best coach of reason and shares his wisdom with FOX sports. I will never watch ESPN game day or wrap up again. Talk to his ex players and see if they or their families have bad word to say about Urban.

Ohio State is freaking Ohio State. Urban didn't build anything. He continued onto something that was already good.
