The USS Liberty was a communication ship. It was in international waters. Israel was told that the ship was not there to listen in on their communications. The Israel pilots were told that it was a Egyptian ship. They saw that it was a American ship, but headquarters (Moshe Dayan) said to destroy it any way. When families and friends wished to erect a memorial to the slain American service men, a group of rabbis stepped in to prevent it. The book is "Attack on Liberty" written by an officer aboard the Liberty and gives a blow by blow account.

I don't see how Americans can live in the US when one serious illess can bankrupt them. I have read in social media that having a baby can cost up $90,000 US.
