I just think that we, who strive to remain faithful to our values (not because we want to be "saints" or anything like that, but for our own peace of mind) are perhaps greater in number than we imagine and perhaps it would do us good if we started to recognize each other and realize that we are not alone.

Couldn't agree more. As a data scientist dealing with data produced by people as well as systems that had been programmed by people for more than 7 years. How turns out be more important than what in the long run. If an organization tolerate unethical behavior to achieve short term profits, what's to say they won't do it again. And just imagine what happens if the organization gets caught and the case becomes public ...
