When we detach our personal identity from our ideas, it creates space for real collaboration. It’s not about being “right” or “wrong” but offering a new lens to consider.

I have experience at doing as such over the last few months. And it has taken me many decades in my career to realise that not making things personal works. It's actually very liberating and more often than not, causes the recipient of opinions to stop and think. It works!!

Tried this recently in a design review where I had strong opinions about the direction we were taking. Instead of my inctincual death grip on my ideas, I just laid out what I was seeing and stepped back. Weird thing was, the team actually circled back to my suggestions later but they came at it their own way. Simon nails it, the less I try to force my perspective, the more it actually gets heard. Makes me think of all the times I got defensive over feedback on past projects. If I'd understood this back then...saved myself a lot of stress and probably would've ended up with better work too.

So true, I have been in meetings where it gets very hard to get to the meat of the conversation because they made it personal. I get being passionate but being passionate and being wrong, then it becomes about you and not the team or good of the group or company

"How to win friends and influence people" makes that same point. He said to make things the other person's idea. Help them form the conclusion and let them take the credit for forming it if necessary

I think this often works because, cynically speaking, the other party (my boss) does not want to take responsibility for the decision.

Hi, This is incredibly difficult for me to do this. I work on it, thats really hard. Nothing linked to being right or wrong but i really hate when we are in meetings and decisions are already made. Basically, if everything is already discussed/validated, why are we in a meeting all together ? Just send us an email : we decide this to solve this, good day.
