It’s pretty weird that he’d say these things. His parents divorced when he was a toddler and his mom’s third husband adopted him. He says he grew up in an abusive household and his mother struggled with drug addiction. He and his sister were raised primarily by his grandparents. I wanna know more about why his grandma had 19 loaded guns around the house. That’s freaking extreme! What or who was she afraid of? Was she afraid of a family member? An ex-husband of her daughter? Drug dealers? Crazy neighbors? Anyway, he’s obviously a jerk because nobody would just pretend to be one, right?

Old childless cat lady here. I would have loved to have had a child but never met any guy who was going to help financially raise a child with me for 20 years. No government help available for me with free daycare or any other relief as I worked full time in a low paying healthcare job requiring working long hours with weekend & holiday coverage. So I did the responsible thing & turned into a childless cat lady who spent a lifetime working full time & paying taxes, recycling, helping care for an elderly mother, and never missing a voting ballot..

In all fairness, I think that Vance is taking a philosophical position that is central to the MAGA mindset and pushing it to its logical conclusion. He running a a thought experiment if you will. If they posit that a foetus is a citizen, a person with rights that are no way inferior to another citizen (the mother) and therefore this citizen must be protected from murder, then by logical extension a bunch of children should also be citizens with all the rights of every other citizen. Such as the right to vote. And since the mind immediately rebels against the idea of letting a 4 year old vote, he makes a functional leap and says that vote would devolve to the parent. A parent of three children is effectively the voting representative of three little citizens (plus herself or himself). It makes sense, and is certainly a position that could stand to be discussed and debated. But it's nothing that has ever been proposed before in our system of government, or any other that I'm aware of. So it seems weird.

Apparently, JD Vance thinks taking IVF, or any women's rights away, will improve, his view of, families; and taking away the Federal Dept of Education, (see Project 2025) will help spread his brand of family values. I think Kamala, a woman, knows more about a woman's rights, needs, and she certainly understands that belittling women isn't the way to get their vote. So, she gets my vote. Therapy is about learning about yourself and your needs so you have the tools to identify your maladaptive habits, learn when you are projecting or being defensive and why, and learn to be truly independent and fulfilled. People with unresolved trauma who never seek help are the ones forever seeking a maternal figure.

So much of the right wing grievance culture is rooted in childhood trauma. Vance’s stunted emotional development stems from the same environment that his mother’s addiction stems from. The abusive and volatile environment that his mother grew up in led to her addiction struggles in adulthood, and her inability to provide a safe, nurturing and healthy environment as a mother. His mother is a very clear example of childhood trauma, and it’s long-term lifelong effects, and he is an example of intergenerational trauma. His grandparents staying together despite the abuse and conflict created the environment that led his mother’s addiction. His grandparents staying together is what led to him having such a terrible childhood. His grievances, his complete lack of empathy and compassion, and his lack of sense of self (as demonstrated in his wildly shifting views and persona) are all the results of his childhood trauma. JD Vance is not unique. His mother is not unique. America has a deep problem with inter-generational and childhood trauma, and that is the root cause behind the grievance culture, attraction to the cult of personality, chronic health problems and obesity, and addiction in the United States. The Christian nationalist ideal society will perpetuate this trauma and spread it further for generations to come. The antidote is a strong social safety net, including healthcare, mental healthcare, bodily autonomy and real support for families/children/parents (childcare, early childhood education, food security, to just name a few).

When children are growing up they will go through different phases where they have different interests and tryout activities and different styles as they try to figure out who they are. It’s particularly strong in preteen and teens as a try to figure out who they are, as they develop their sense of self. Vance is stuck or stunted in this stage and he has continued to try on these different personalities and beliefs and styles as he is still searching for who he is. He’s perfect for Trump because Trump wants a sycophant and deep down all Vance wants is to be accepted and belong. This story is appropriate since Vance is obviously saying these things, but really it could apply to the vast majority of conservatives. The right has always been obsessed with controlling and dominating women and reproduction and marriage. Very similar to Iran and the taliban, they view women and children as their property. This isn't new or unique to Vance.

Just watched the Netflix movie about this guy's broken life. It's not the fact that he comes from violent drug addicted hill people, but that he wants to brag about it is what makes Vance weird. In his recent speech at the RNC, he bragged about finding 19 loaded pistols scattered around his dead grandmother's house. The guy is messed up.

I agree. The bragging about it is what is unusual. The Hillbilly Elegy book, written at the urging of his wife and friends, could have been suggested as therapeutic for a messed up guy.
