Viktor did hit the brakes when Skye died because he asked Jayce to destroy the Hexcore as he realised how dangerous it was. Jayce in a moment of panic when he thought he was going to lose his best friend, went against Viktor's request and combined him with the Hexcore. Afterwards, once Viktor discovered he had the ability to heal people, felt content and like he achieved something great which could help humanity. He sincerely wanted to change the world for better. From this point onwards Viktor started down a dark path, but he wasn't fully aware of how damaging it would be to strip people of their "flaws". He thought he was making things better even though he wasn't, which doesn't make him bad. It just ironically shows how Viktor getting rid of humanity's "flaws" was his ultimate flaw and eventual undoing

Yeah, idk man, i really think this is a misinterpretation of his character. Victor isn't just ambition. He's an embodiment of an oppressed people, and the need to become something else to escape oppression. He isn't doing it for him, he is, legitimately, trying to help his people, from day one to the very end. The transformation from a sick, dying, cancer growth ridden people, dependent on substances and mechanical limbs just to get by into an orderly healthy group of people living in harmony? Deeply hopeful, even if the process of doing "kills the old them", for a lot of people, that's still a huge win. For the chronic illness sufferers of the world, Victor is a huge W, not evil. The moment robot bodies are an option? Sign me the heck up.

You only got one thing wrong, "the machine herald" does not exist in this new canon. The Viktor from Arcane isn't the same Viktor we know initially from League of Legends. Arcane Viktor isn't the machine herald, he is the arcane herald, he even reffered to himself as "the herald of the arcane" in the show. And the lore splits when his first partial transformation (his leg) started with the hexcore. OG VIktor returned to Zaun way before fusing with the Hexcore. Originally he realized that most bad things in Zaun weren't at fault of the machinery, but due to human error. He started modifying himself, not just his body slowly replaced my machinery, but he altered his mind himself, removing his emotions. What was so appealing to the old Viktor, he was briliant but with a broken body and came from a broken, toxic place. The power he acquired when he became the "machine herald" was self built with the only gift being his high intellect. Arcane Viktor is different. His body isn't machinery, it's arcane matter. His power wasn't self given and created, it was gifted through the hexcore. This is why many Viktor mains who fell in love with him with his old lore absolutely despise the arcane rework and especially with what they did ingane, creating an amalgamation of the 2 versions. OG League Viktor and Arcane Viktor are completely different persons and canons.

Meh you ignored a few key differences of his character that make him unique and more complex than the usual tragic mad scientist. You ignored the fact that when sky was gone he didn't just ignored the danger and kept going like the frankenstein trope. He immediately aknowledged his error and the damaged he caused and tried to fix it and stop using hextech. It was only because of outside circumstances. IE Jayce and JInx. Even when he merged with the hexcore in S2 he still didnt forget what he did and used all his life to cure the people of zaun. Again it was because of outside circumstances the reason that things turned for the worse. Victor its rather unique in that regard, in the usually in the mad scientist trope, the scientist is at fault and he is the one that harms society because of his arrogance, in victor case however, despite his best efforts to help and remain humble, it is society that is at fault that he is driven mad with grief and nihilism.
