You're underestimating Svetislav Pešić, before that he won the European Champions League and as soon as he took over the national team, the European Championship, where Divac didn't even play. Bodiroga never wanted to play in the NBA because he doesn't like the style of basketball where the game is based on athletic ability rather than technique. That's what Jokić is doing now. And at the last World Cup, Serbia beat the USA by 15 points.

Just for the sake of younger viewers, this "Yugoslavia" is actually made up of players from Serbia and Montenegro. Without Macedonia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. That Yugoslavia had the population of half the city of New York, and that's why Lithuania and Serbia are the most basketball-playing countries in the world when you take into account their size, number of inhabitants...
@netoserbia Жыл бұрын
That is true, but 12/12 players from 2002. roster was Serbians. The year before, in Eurobasket 2001, there was one player from Montenegro - Vlado Šćepanović. That was probably most dominant FR Yugoslavia team ever.

Just a note on coach Kari Pešić, the relationship between Divac and him stems from the Yugoslavia U19 team, which won the the world cup back in ‘87 when it was still the old country with a scary roster (Divac, Kukoč, Radja, Djordjević, etc..). Pešić was their coach, not Vlade’s coffee maid in Sacramento.

Let's be precise, this Yugoslavia was basically Serbia with some additions from Montenegro. Croatia had it's moments in the nineties, but as a national team totally plumetted afterwards, Slovenia didn't fully emerge until Dragić and Dončić exploded on Eurobasket 2017, but Serbia has been consistantly good at major tournaments, to say the least. This was golden Serbian generation, every player was world class, and my favorite of them all, Bodiroga, was out-of-this-world class.
@milutinitc4937 Жыл бұрын

Good video, I love you guys and this channel. As a fellow Serbian basketball lover I appreciate what you do and have a lot of respect for Lithuanian basketball. Wish Augustas was here as well. Just one thing. The Divac - Pešić thing with the coffee and them getting to know each other sounded very interesting and romantic but not entirely true. Maybe the coffee part is true (I doubt) heheh, but the two of them knew each other from before, and knew each other probably too well. Svetislav Pešić coached Yugoslavian youth national teams that won basically everything from 1984 to 1987, culminating in World Championship gold medal in 1987 in Borneo, and that was a crazy good generation that included Vlade Divac, Aleksandar Đorđević, Toni Kukoč, Dino Rađa and some other excellent but not so legendary players. They slept, breathed, ate and trained with Pešić every single day for a couple of months non stop on some mountains every year cursing Pešić for extremely hard practices. So they knew each other too well, the issue was probably if Divac as a 34 years old NBA player was willing to put up again with that shit.

Guys, I'm a journalist and first thing first: you are doing much much better game analysis than most NBA commentators. Respect. I really like the comment "... there was a guy, called Arvydas..." 👍The only thing that is missing in this video has in fact nothing to do with sport. Serbia was bombed by USA in 1999 and the serbian basketball team in 2002 made akind of 'the sport revenge of the millenium' by beating the USA & then winning the world cup on the american soil. And not anywhere on the 'enemy' ground, but right in the hart - in Indianapolis, the home of USA and all global basketball.

Argentina beating USA was not shock at all if You know the Argentina roaster at that time. They were simply better. And Yugoslavia won the final grace of Bodiroga mental strenght in last minutes. As Serbian I always felt deep respect for that Argentina team as well as Lituanian team in 90s
@netoserbia Жыл бұрын
@@ljubastojanovic608 it wasn't a shock if you had knew the Argentina roaster at that time, but it was shock just because it was the first defeat ever since NBA professionals have been playing ('don't count '98. because of lockout)
@ljubastojanovic608 Жыл бұрын
@@netoserbia That is exactly my point. If you look at Yugoslavia roaster for Argentina 1990. every one knowing anything about basketball knew that only NBA selection could be better. Instead, USA selected, as usually, best not NBA players and then on Good will games in USA few weeks before Argentina that team was easy beaten by Yugoslavia two times. Only then they concluded that next time, in 1992 OG in Barcelona USA must have DReam team, composed of best NBA players. But for 2002 WC they again started to think that NBA is so superior that USA should only to select few great players, several good players and couple of young players to be dominant. The result was not shock but reality, that selection was not good enough for Argentina, Yugoslavia and Spain, Lithuania. Today, if you organize match USA NBA against "foreign" NBA players maybe you will find again some people to be shocked by result, But if you look at roasters and if you know which players were NBA MVP,s lately....
@netoserbia Жыл бұрын
@@ljubastojanovic608 You are absolutely right, but I have to correct you - NBA players were not allowed to play for the USA (or any other country) until Barcelona in 1992. It was only after the NBA adopted some rules and after an agreement was reached with FIBA that made that possible. In essence, the trigger was the defeat against the USSR in 1988. Olympics, and with the great contribution of Bora Stanković at the head of FIBA.

Can you guys do the analysis of Euro Championship '95 finals between Yugoslavia and Lithuania. For me it was the best, most intense finals in history. Sabonis, Marculionis were on fire, while Djordjevic on the other side played the game of his life. Before the match, greek press started spreading rumors that the tournament is rigged in favour of YUG, that FIBA President at that time Bora Stankovic, who was a Serb, is involved...( GR lost to YUG in semifinals) This created so much drama, accusations of rigged game and that referees were somehow favouring YUG team while the rowdy greek crowd overwhelmingly suported Litvanian team. Marko Jaric's father Srecko was my favorite player - he player for the "Romantics', Belgrade. He was known for his trickery with the ball by spinning it and passing a la Jokic. I remember once he threw the ball between the opposing center's wide spread legs with so much 'spin' the ball actually returned - while the center turned around searching for it! He wasn't a team player and was undisciplined but was fun to watch. He could have actually played for the Harlem Globetrotters if he wasn't white.
