“He’s a bit long in the tooth” is a description of a horse’s age. As equines age, both the length and the angle of their teeth change. A line visible along each tooth also lengthens. This gives an experienced horsewoman the ability to determine the age of the animal with pretty good accuracy.

Also, thus the saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

Applies to humans too. The gum recedes a bit giving the tooth a longer appearance & a more aging look

Have you considered a carport for your vehicles in the current parking area? It could be constructed in such a way as to be complimentary to the house and Hartley; open and airy, yet protective; an opportunity for Christmas lights and growing vines, much less bulky and sight-blocking than a garage.

Can I just say how much influence you’ve had on me over the past two years? (Since I first found you!) Because of you I’ve purchased, a power planter drill and augers, espoma everything (when I can find it), microfleur flower press, Hoselink, johnnys seeds, colorblend bulbs, felcos, pop up bag, natures willow products, mountain crest succulents, and a host of plants, shrubs and trees! When you first started out, were there such things as internet influencers? Because you certainly have become one!! Lol!! 😂❤

You were talking about the suggestion of a fire pit in brick area- yes you have a fireplace in that area connected but… formal intimate setting, fire pit….marshmallows, hotdogs. When kids are OLDER,kids at fire pit while adults are chatting at fireplace. A fountain/pool would be pretty and sound nice too. So many fun options- all wins 😁

I’m loving the way you’ve taken inspiration from Jack Barnwell, not just in the low stone walls and your intention to add more ground cover, but in the new patio area, the way you’ve designed the entryway from your parking area to open in two directions, inviting arrivals to go either to the patio directly or right up the path toward your shade porch. It’s fun to see how you’re taking that fresh inspiration from Jack and applying it to your own spaces in your own way. It *helps me* to see that, too, that I can be inspired by another gardener’s ideas without needing to copy an exact project to fit those ideas into my own space. Thank you for sharing the process!

Laura and Aaron, why not build a carport where the trucks are currently parked? It doesn't have to be ugly, make the side that faces the Harley look like a pergula or something along those lines. Close in that side a bit so the vehicles don't scream at you when you're in that space. Or 3 sides from bricks or something and it's only open where you pull in. Vehicles won't be warm but they'll be protected from snow, rain, sun and your eyes :)

I have yews (7a) in Tennessee. They are fabulous. Grow well and pretty fast; you don't have to be really precise when pruning...they'll will fill back in quickly if you make a cut you wish you hadn't. And they take a hard prune without flinching. Mine are never bothered by sider mites or any other pests. They make great hedges. And in summer, mine are in full sun during the hottest part of the day. I never water mine either - they're mature and we get enough rain here that I can skip watering.
