Thanks for the backstory on Rory! Wow, what a male w...e. He did look good though! I would guess his street smarts gave him the rough, and tough look some parts needed. I remember many shows he was in. Too bad he had such a bad temper. I truly enjoy your voice, and story telling style. The sound of your british accent is easy to listen to, and tone and tempo really awesome. That was my dream to be a voice over actress, or book voice. Look forward to more of your work.

In the summer of ‘67 I was in Miami Beach with a friend for three days staying at the Fountain bleu hotel and Sinatra was playing in the ballroom. Of course, two young men in town on business didn’t have money for tickets to the show but, I vividly recall standing outside the entrance before the show watching all these beautiful people arriving in Lincoln’s and Caddy’s, the women with their furs and jewelry, the men all in full tuxes. Then a short distance from me I heard this booming loud laughter and saw the face of a ruggedly handsome fellow who seemed about a head taller than everyone else… It was Rory Calhoun!

This video seems a bit sensational to me. I had the pleasure of working with Rory Calhoun on what I believe was his final film. Despite what the narrator mentioned (he didn't even mention the name of the film, I doubt he ever saw it), Rory had a substantial role in the film. He did not have a "small part," as the narrator claimed. The Film was Pure Country and the director raved to me about his acting choices. Rory Calhoun was the real deal, we all saw his presence during filming. Anyway, I was a young chunk of coal back then. Rory was about 7 years prior to leaving us at that time. During filming I made it a point to find him on the set, fetch him a banana and a cup of coffee. It was an excuse for me to just sit and shoot the breeze with him and listen to his stories. He was wearing his black cowboy hat and we'd laugh it up every day. I mostly would listen to his glorious tales about Hollywood back in the 1940s and so forth. He never held back. He called me Grandson, I think, jokingly. He had a cigarette in one hand at all times. We took some photos together. He stood close to 6' 5" even as an aging actor, gaunt and in poor health. Elderly women were all over the set asking me to introduce them to Rory. He had that rugged cowboy sex appeal, most definitely. RIP, Mr. Calhoun.

There's no evidence for either Nader nor Calhoun. First of all, they cannot decide if it's Tab Hunter, George Nader or Rory Calhoun. Calhoun denied he was actually exposed. He said in an interview that it was going to come out so he bit the bullet and admitted it. George Nader 's sexuality was never exposed. He only came out in the 1980s when talking about Rock Hudson for biographies. Tab Hunter is the most likely. Hunter had dropped Henry Wilson as a client and it could have been an act of revenge to expose Hunter as gay. It first came out in September 1955 and did nothing to hurt his career. But Hudson was married in November of 1955, so they sure took a bit of time getting him married. Whatever the case, Hunter believed the story about being a sacrifice for Hudson. They remained friends though.

I remember him for several westerns, but only one film, “River Of No Return” with Monroe and Mitchum. Oh that film! Troubled set, difficult shoot, mediocre script, gorgeous scenery, Marilyn acting up more than acting, and Prima Donna Preminger all rolled into one, and young Tommy Rettig taking it all in stride. Throw in Rory as the bad guy and the deep baritone of Ernie Ford singing the title song and it comes together. The 1954 film made a healthy profit for Fox especially with Monroe’s drawing power, although she considered it her worst film. But it’s one of my favorites! Oops, sorry. Generally I would not leave a comment unless it is a positive one. This time, however, I find myself compelled to point out that this video is rather difficult to follow. Nearly ten minutes passed before its title issue had its first mention. Afterward the subject was intercepted again with Calhoun's roles and career when the narrator had already been speaking of an incident (a date) make little of a point besides that Calhoun's agent was a homosexual and that could be misunderstood by association. That was evident. Some insight was required in that area I think, but before anything happens, we are back to his films etc..... I wish it was a video about Calhoun's career, because it is rather thin on the material of the catchy title.

Is there a mention here of Rory's 1980 horror film Motel Hell? I had always liked rugged Rory and his amazing eyes and was tickled to see him in a film like this. A farmer and his cohorts trapped wayward strangers and buried them alive to "harvest" their flesh. Not for everyone but still a lot of laughs to be found.

I liked Calhoun's movies as a youngster. My dad was an unquestionable Western fan growing up. "Pops" read all the Zane Gray Paperbacks and many others and would tell me bed time stories that seemed to be real to me. During the 50's and 60's we would watch all the Westerns on TV. We lived and breathed the Westerns in those days.

If you want to see what a great actor and how funny he was you should see the George Strait movie called Pure Country. Rory was very elderly and the dad of two sons and the daughter George took an interest in. It may have been his last movie since it was made in the late 90’s. I was shocked when I recognized him immediately. He was still tall and slim and his hair was gray, but his acting abilities were still there in spades.

I mainly know Mr. Calhoun from one of his last starring roles, as one of the proprietors of Motel Hello, seen in the early '80s horror-comedy film Motel Hell. It's better than many other slasher-type films of that era, with genuine scares and some crazy laughs, too. Mr. Calhoun delivers an unforgettable last line of dialogue, confessing his biggest sin as a businessman.

He’s really a character actor or second lead. Why some people are stars and others aren’t quite is complex. In River of No Return you have Robert Mitchum against Rory, both with similar dodgy youth backgrounds, Rory is definitely the better looking, they could switch roles, but Mitchum has commanding screen presence and chemistry, he’s a star, he can carry a film, he can really act. Marilyn Monroe is in the same movie. On set of all her films many couldn’t see anything happening with her, when they saw the rushes they were astonished, the camera loved her and she knocked everyone else off the screen. Of course, you also need to get the right role at the right time in a big hit movie. But Rory still had a great and long career and some of us are still talking about him.
