How Waynes World Saved Bohemian Rhapsody

Yes, it is a song we have all heard at least once. And it is not like anything you've heard before.
I'm of course talking about Queen's legendary single "Bohemian Rhapsody," which many call the greatest song ever.
However, it reached only the No.9 position on Billboard's Hot 100 when it first came out. That is until Myers' Wayne's World was out.
The movie, released in February 1992, featured Bohemian Rhapsody in what's become one of comedy's most iconic scenes. And just like that, a whole new generation of Americans was introduced to Bohemian Rhapsody, probably for the first time ever. It shot to No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing its original high.
And then again in 2019, Rami Malek won an oscar for the blockbuster musical drama, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'-(2018).

"Saved" Bohemian Rhapsody? I don´t think so. This song was never in danger. Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the songs responsible for the Greatest Hits collection to remain on the UK charts for 900 weeks.

Well, they probably just mean to bring it back to the charts because for the generation that didn't really know him and was only a baby when Queen was just getting famous. I didn't even know about Queen at all until Wayne's World. I was born 1975.

I met Bohemian Rhapsody when Queen came to play in my country, in South America, six years after the release of the single, a new generation got to know the song after Freddie Mercury's death, after the release of the movie and so on. But I cannot say that the South American tour saved a song that is constantly voted one of the best ever or that the film did the same thing.

naw, it was gone. ANother Bites the Dust was the only song of theirs that was still noteworthy. MM brought that bisexual song to the American forefront.

WW introduced this song to a new generation (1992 vs 1975). My friend's kids were excited about the "Bohemian Rap Song", as they called it. They doubted my correction, until I (ancient old person) began reciting the lyrics. We were into a singalong, at the "Mama, just killed a man" point, when their mom walked into the kitchen and discovered that her dear "church lady friend", knew the lyrics as well as her kids knew them, from the radio in 1992. I felt very cool, much respect from the youngsters, and requests to talk/sing the lyrics, such fun! Best part, this magnificent song was appreciated by a new generation, may it be so forever.

Queens real story is so fantastic, to bad the movie had to stray so far from the truth. Always wondered why Roger and Brian went along. Best band ever. Their songs, their concerts, their playing no comparison. 👑👑👑

Everybody on this thread talking about this song didn't need saving, clearly were not around in the 80s/90s. This song was obscure and forgotten before MM brought it into the movie. Even when the movie came out, it was a topic of discussion amongst the metal-heads as to why they chose it.

Well in America only. Remember that Queen were banned on MTV for wearing womens clothing in I want to break free video and fell out of favour. They were still doing sell out tours all over the world except the USA.

3:40 Thank you!!! it made no sense to have two head-bangers listening to a homoerotic anthem from some Queens. This moment made no sense and it did irreparable damage to the metal scene at the time. If they had used something like Metallica or GNR, it would've made the opening rock. Instead we sat in the theater going, "what is this power ballad crap?" Within a year, the white kids at school that was into metal, were listening to the Geto Boys. Fruitie Mike Myers helped usher rockers to the has-been lane. The producer was right and I bet there was animosity there for a long time. The movie is still funny though.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure. Surely Bohemian Rhapsody was rereleased in 1991, around the time Mercury died. Wayne's World came out 3 months later.
