Julie I’ve only just started following you, but I’m so impressed with your enthusiasm for the English way of life and its history. You are so supportive of Restoring Mapperton and contributing to conservation by engaging with others and influencing all of us to take care of our heritage. I live in Australia but English born and still have a keen interest in historical buildings and artefacts both here in Australia and UK so very pleased to have found you.

Hi Julie, Amazing the work you did on your now beautiful archive room. You are so inspiring that I have decided that this weekend I will be off to the paint store to redo my bedroom and adjoined by original pillars, a sitting room for reading and zooming with clients. My mother taught me so much about design and because of that, I can look at your work and see your great taste running through all of it. Good on you guys for keeping on going and in the process giving me the push to complete more. Tomorrow is restoration fireplace! See you on the next one. Hugs from Canada, Diane

I think Darren needs a Mapperton hat!! Such wonderful work he does! And how amazing to have Doris come and do the repairs to the Aubusson rug on site! I'm glad you could hand that project over to your mum since there's just so much to do always. The barn project looks difficult but would make an amazing retirement home when completed! That view is so soothing to the soul! Maybe you could go on Grand Designs for that one!

I am so delighted to have found this channel, along with the other one. I had seen the American Viscountess on another channel, and then i found the real channel with much more. I live in Michigan, and enjoy seeing these old stately homes being repaired and lived in, while making them pay for the up keep. You crack me up with your enthusiasm, and it is refreshing. I am 53, and have progressive MS, causing muscle wasting, numbness, and weakness on my entire left side, so i struggle between keeping in motion, and then the time's when i have to rest, in order to take a break from the pain, and to get some energy. I am enjoying watching all these activities, good on you for covering all this. G-d bless.

Remodeling, repair and restoration never ends on a ten year old home. I can't even imagine on a 500 year old home and estate. A never ending project. So glad that these homes are being preserved. So may were knocked down after WW2 just because they became to expensive to maintain and there was little money by some to keep them up. A 1960 movie: "The Grass Is Greener" is a small example of the post war period and owning a historic English country home.

Hi from the middle of Georgia, USA. One of those barns for rewinding visitation would make a fantastic pavilion under which school children, seniors, etc, could eat their lunch on picnic tables. That would be especially helpful to get out of inclement weather such as strong winds or rain or even just muddy walks. Love your channel and have learned so very much. ❤

The best source for information on the history, derivation and meanings of any English word, such as FINIAL, is the Oxford English Dictionary. I loved mine when I had one, and enjoyed just reading it. A good library will have the complete OED, which is 20-some volumes. The compact edition, which requires the encased magnifying glass to read, is a cased set of a small number of volumes.

The root of the word "finial" is the Latin word finis, which means "end." The root of the word "finial" is significant in architecture because finials are usually built at the top of a building, hence the relationship to "finis" or "end." The purpose of finials is usually decorative.

Hey Julie. I don’t comment much because everything you do is perfect in my mind. But I do have a question. The fairytale cottage restoration is beautiful. But isn’t the English way of decorating adding a bit more accessories to warm up the spaces to make them more cozy? Are you and Malcom going to shop a bit for a few things to add to the cottage like some outdoor furniture, artwork over the fireplace, warm throws for the couch, etc? Or when you rent a space perhaps you have to have minimal accessories? Anyway greetings from Kansas City USA. ❤❤

Finials are common in interior design. Tops of lamps to secure the shade and ends of drapery rods to keep the drapes from sliding off. Both decorative and functional. I never thought of the origin of the word but it is the last piece u put on ...so perhaps French...Tu Finis! You finish??? Just a guess from Eastern Canada.

They also have finials on beds. In approximately the 19th century, bed finials were removable. If you found it laying on your pillow after breakfast, that indicated it was time for you (as a visitor) to leave. I learned this from docenting in an 1850s house in Texas.
