I have a real distaste for NordVPN ever since they had been hacked and then tried to hide the fact from their customers. So when a KZbin channel is sponsored by them it kind of turns me off. I mean there are other VPN services out there nor can't be the only one that you can be sponsored by. My two cents.

something Im always thinking about with my boat is (how will I fix that later) as you completed the rudder bearing install I thought! "how do you...Replace that" an aluminum hull gives you lots of options to fix things along the way, now that you are working on fitment of the bits and bobs to the boat I would also be interesting to add in a bit of....and this is how we will be able to fix/repair or maintain this in the future. I can see this is a big part of the thought process so far, it might ad a bit more content that I think would be super interesting! as always thanks for sharing all your progress
@whome17803 күн бұрын
I was going to ask the same question (about future maintenance). All bearings wear over time, in an ocean environment there is also a possibility growth/corrosion issues as well the normal damage risk. The first thing I thought was maybe that stuff can be dissolved with an acid/solvent to allow removal. With luck they should last 20+ years I'd hope but I know personally I don't get that kind of luck :P Coming from an aviation background I always think about which maintenance window does this come under, daily/weekly/monthly/yearly/refit and these definitely seem to fit into the refit window. A valid option but it would still be interesting to see the thought process (even if it is cutting out the rudder tubes and replacing them completely). On that note I would be really interested to see what the 'owners maintenance schedule' looks like when done. I guess Brian is still creating it as they build, I assume some choices have still yet to be made, but I'm not sure if I've heard them mention the maintenance preferences and the design choices they have made around this (always a compromise but an interesting part of the design process).
@HiltsyAdventure3 күн бұрын
@@whome1780 - its just a sleave, you can take the baring out I believe. and if you need to get the leave out then you'll probably have to cut it out.
@elleorhighwater3 күн бұрын
@whome1780 Thanks for pointing this out. I think that often design professionals don't consider maintenance when they create products, and designing/fabricating your own end product puts that ability back into the user's hands. I'm also curious to hear about how those decisions have affected the build.
@whome17802 күн бұрын
@@HiltsyAdventure Yeah I thought it might be a sleeve on the bottom one but I didn't see a close up in the video so I didn't want to assume it was, I thought it might have just been the outer race being shown but I think you are right on that. I don't have a problem with it being done this way at all. Welding is tricky due to the possibility of warping due to heat (more of an issue with a sleeve than a bearing). I see a lot of other boats using bolt on caps to hold the bearings and that makes sense from a maintenance point of view, although they do seem to use smaller bearings so are more for shorter term/easier to replace maintenance window option. The downsides with bolts is the dissimilar metals corrosion issues/seized bolts/etc so not so good for long term maintenance windows. I don't think there is a perfect solution for these kind things, always a compromise :D. Those did look like some hefty bearings so that does lend itself to a longer life refit window schedule

Doesn’t get hot or cold, good grip, no maintenance and easy to clean. We’ve put it on ourselves which was easy. My husband, as well as myself love your boat build. He really appreciates it as when I i met him he was working for a boat builder on Cape Cod in New England. He built small weekend sailing boats built for the bay only. He also worked on commercial drift fishing boats as a teenager. He also commercial fished out of a 19' Chris Craft in board that had a stuffing box, it had a lap streak hull, oak over mahogany. It was possibly to fish with it as long as he stayed in Cape Cod Bay as he mostly long lined for Cod and in the summer months rod a reel fishing for striped bass. A few times I i remember watching him leave the harbor and go out an inlet to get to his fishing equipment. There were times i coukd not see him his helper or his boat as he wntered into the swells of the inlet - all the while i looked on from the hill . In the same boat, him and I wrnt out fishing one time to do some rod and reel fishing as my favorite catch was flounder. Sometimes my husband also did some 'jigging'. But this one particular day a storm came in fast, and in order to go in we had to go out first to follow the waves back in through the inlet. The waves came at the 19 footer. It had a windshield like a dodger with a canvas topper. The wheel was under the canvas along with a full bench across the beam. We both huddled under, but a gig wave hit us and went over the windshield and canvas. All i saw was green water and i swear I saw fish. We really enjoy all your adventures. The education and experiences your little one is getting irriplaceable. Now your roach problem! We have two types her in Florida. There us the german roach and the palmetto bug. Im more interested in a natural approach. With palmetto's i have found that water with a little bit if dish soap and put in a soray bottle with a setting also for a stream is very good. When you see them spray them, in time they come out and die, because their protection gets washed off. I recently found a powder made from 1 part sugar with one part baking soda. This is suppose to kill both ants and roaches . Don't know if this will help. Looking forward how your inteior design is going to look, especially the colors you select.

Great Episode! Lots of fun. Here is a consolidated list of the comments. 1. Buy a few Geckos, they will eat the roaches 2. Keep the Huntsman spiders, they will eat the roaches & bad spiders. 3. Build an extra Rudder, people are concerned that they are not filled with foam ? 4. The power "Bar" might turn your boat into a huge electrical panel, if it gets accidentally adjacent to something that could unintentionally draw power. You might create a problem. Wire with a rubber exterior coating (conventional) might be a better option. 5. Have a welder on board. 6. Tom Sellak, Burt Reynolds & Ron Jeremy sightings in an Australian Boat yard have been reported. 7. Could the rudders fall out of the boat? Is there a way to build a mechanical stop? Rubber boots to stop water entering the Rudder cavities? 8. Insulation look into the Basalt product.Foam areas that you can not get to.

I live aboard a 2011 Gemini 105Mc Sailing Catamaran. It, of course, has twin retractable swing up rudders (Fiberglass shell on a solid SS shaft). One day I swung the rudders up to clean them and lo and behold, one of the shells was just gone. Shocker!! Was in Florida at the time, and luckily, there is a custom rudder builder in central Florida. (Foss Rudders). They built a new rudder on my old shaft, adding extra support to strengthen. Installed easily and has served perfectly ever since.

Brian, you may have already solved this issue, but I shuddered when I saw the inspection hatch on the back step for the emergency tiller. A Manta Catamaran went down after opening the inspection hatch in a similar position to install the emergency tiller in a heavy following sea. That size hole is enough to sink the boat. The solution was a flexible waterproof collar attached to the underside of the inspection port that could be pulled out and up when inserting the tiller, then cinched tight against the shaft.

As the rudders are hollow and air-filled, is there any advantage in fitting drain plugs? One top and one bottom would allow you to drain them in the event of a leak, or attach an air line to the top one while in the water and push any water out the bottom one - maybe even purge the void with a chemical treatment if you ever need to? I’m sure your designer and fabricator know exactly what they’re doing, but it’s always nice to have options down the road!
