Ive even studying and dabbling in natural building for 35 years and rammed earth is currently at the top of the list for a major nice addition. I love that when the forms are removed it’s done. No wrap, sheathing, insulating, screws, nails, painting, siding. So many steps can be skipped.

I’m hoping the soil here is adequate for rammed earth. There’s two levels of soil. A high clay bottomland soil with very fine silty structure and a upper bench of soil that has more rocks and sand and little clay. I’m guessing the upper soil will work best or a mixture of the two.

Rammed Earth is amazing. We originally fell in love with the aesthetic of it. It’s fire resistant, insect and mold resistant and yes it eliminates multiple scopes of work in comparison to traditional wood framed construction. Hope to see more of this method being used in the future.

Best thing to do is make test samples from your material in small forms. Play with your mixture until you get the consistency and strength. It takes time but once you have it you’ll be off to the races!

Yes, I forgot to add trim to list of materials and labor that can be eliminated or largely eliminated.

Another great video. Your can-do attitude inspires me and gives me the confidence while planning my own project that I can do it. I'm working my way through the book you recommended, it's a great resource. With your next project, will you be laying a concrete slab or just sticking with footings? If a slab, could you discuss the logistal problems that need to be overcome, if any, when doing it as a self-builder? Also I'm interested in roofing options. You are building a structure designed to last, so how do you match that with a roof of a similar lengevity? Or is it not an issue and you just accept that at some point you will have to replace the roof?

Hello again! Thanks for the compliments! The next project will most likely have rammed earth above grade only. It may be a combination of foundation/piles as well as a slab. Engineering will dictate the end design. If slab is in place I don’t see any issues as long as it is fully cured a skid steer can drive on it. Not having to work around an open excavation would be safer and more efficient for rammed earth install. The roof will be wood with overhangs to protect the rammed earth. Metal roofing will be used for longevity and fire rating properties. You could look into aircrete. I’ve heard about it but have not pursued learning more on the method. Have a great day!

@@thetielife How about a tiled picthed roof? Good for insulation in Summer and Winter. Or is that a pain to put on compared to wood and metal?

What part of Canada are you in? I'm wondering if we're located close as I'll be doing rammed earth in BC. I like your walls as they don't have those holes that I always see in other walls.
